WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

§ PROCESSIONAL HYMNOnce in Royal David’s City H. J. GAUNTLETT (1805-1876)

ARR. DAVID WILLCOCKS (b.1919)

Solo: Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Choir: He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Savior holy.

All: For he is our childhood’s pattern, day by day like us he grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew: And he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness.

All: And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heav’n above; And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

All: Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high: Where like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.

– C. F. Alexander (1818-1895)

§ THE PEOPLE ARE BIDDEN TO PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

CAROLThere in God’s Garden K. LEE SCOTT (b.1950)

ARR. JEREMY BANKSON (b.1975)

Choir: There in God’s garden stands the Tree of Wisdom, whose leaves hold forth the healing of the nations: Tree of all knowledge, Tree of all compassion, Tree of all beauty.

Its name is Jesus, name that says, “Our Savior!” There on its branches see the scars of suff ’ring; See there the tendrils of our human self-hood feed on its lifeblood.

Thorns not its own are tangled in its foliage; our greed has starved it, our despite has choked it. Yet,look!itlives!itsgrief hasnotdestroyeditnorfireconsumedit.

See how its branches reach to us in welcome; hear what the Voice says, “Come to me, ye weary! Give me your sickness, give me all your sorrow, I will give blessing.”

All: This is my ending, this my resurrection; into your hands, Lord, I commit my spirit. This have I searched for; now I can possess it. This ground is holy.

All: All heav’n is singing, “Thanks to Christ whose passion offers in mercy healing, strength, and pardon. Peoples and nations, take it, take it freely!” Amen! My Master!

– Király Imre von Pécselyi (ca.1590-1641), tr. Erik Routley (1917-1982)

CAROLCreator of the Stars of Night SARUM PLAINSONG

ARR. MICHAEL BURKHARDT (b.1957)

Creator of the stars of night, your people’s everlasting light,O Christ, Redeemer of us all, we pray you, hear us when we call.

When this old world drew on toward night, you came, but not in splendor bright,Not as a monarch, but the child of Mary, chosen mother mild.

At your great name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend, all hearts must bow:All things on earth with one accord, like those in heav’n shall call you Lord.

To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One,Praise, honor, might, and glory be from age to age eternally. Amen.

– Latin hymn (9th century), trans. John Mason Neale (1818-1866)

Bring the dream Isaiah saw: life redeemed from fang and claw.

Peacewillpervademorethanforestandfield:GodwilltransfiguretheviolenceconcealedDeep in the heart and in systems of gain, ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain.Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart.Bring the dream Isaiah saw: justice purifying law.

CAROLStar in the East ANONYMOUS

THE SOUTHERN HARMONY (1854)

Hail, the blest morn, see the great Mediator, down from the region of glory descend!Shepherds, go worship the babe in the manger, Lo, for his guard the bright angels attend. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning! Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; Star in the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer was laid.

Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining; low lies his bed, with the beasts of the stall;Angels adore him, in slumbers reclining, wise men and shepherds before him do fall. Refrain

Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, odours of Edom, and offerings divine,Gems from the mountain, and pearls from the ocean, myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine. Refrain

Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gold we his favour secure.Richer by far is the heart’s adoration: dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. Refrain

– st. 1, anonymous; st. 2-4, Reginald Heber (1783-1826)

THE EIGHTH LESSONThe wise men are led by the star to Jesus. (Matthew ii)

Choir: And by the light of that same star, three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went: Refrain

All: Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heav’nly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of naught, and with his blood mankind hath bought: Refrain
