Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture opened themuseum’s Season of Chinese Art, which explored thebest of the genre and presented it for a contemporary, international audience. With 20 Chinese artmasterpieces from the Museum’s collection and 29dresses by Guo Pei, this blockbuster exhibition spannedtwo galleries and is part of the Museum’s commitmentto examining the Asia’s diverse cultural heritage, interconnections within Asia, and connections betweenAsia and the rest of the world. Mr Kennie Ting, Directorof the Asian Civilisations Museum and PeranakanMuseum, explained “Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Coutureis significant to our visitors for two reasons. Firstly, it isour first special exhibition dedicated to fashion andthus is representative of our shift to the contemporarydomain. Our aim is to make a point as to how heritageand tradition are still very much relevant to thecontemporary; that heritage and tradition can beremarkably sexy and alluring. Every masterpiece in theexhibition is a unique blend of contemporary andtraditional design, material and craft. Secondly, theexhibition has been designed to give visitors a simpleand visually arresting overview of Chinese art history:imperial art, export art, and folk art. We wanted a showthat would introduce visitors to aspects of Chinese art –materials like silk and porcelain, the craft ofembroidery, motifs such as peonies and phoenixes – ina completely unexpected and, hopefully, verymemorable fashion.”

Guo Pei’s works are displayed on Bonaverimannequins. The exhibition began with a dramaticdisplay of 黄皇后 (Yellow Queen), the iconic cape wornby Rihanna to the 2015 Met Gala. A symbol of Guo Pei’sbreakthrough to an international market, the dress alsorepresents a moment in time when the worldencountered and engaged – through countlessreactions, conversations, and memes –with amasterwork inspired by the imperial China. The mainexhibition space featured three sections. In ‘Gold is theColour of my Soul’, Guo Pei’s signature yellow and goldworks reflected the historical significance of colour, techniques, and materials strongly associated withimperial China. In ‘Treasured Heirlooms: Chinese BridalDress’, Guo Pei’s works were shown to continue andmodernise traditional Chinese bridal style, with strongPeranakan connections; and they have found relevancewith celebrity brides today, including Angelababy, LiuShi Shi, and Tang Yan.Every sightline in the exhibition space emphasised a

visual dialogue between the historical and the

contemporary through deliberate juxtapositions ofChinese art masterpieces and Guo Pei’s masterworks. Each pairing showed off the best of Chinese traditionalcraftsmanship as well as modern couture techniques inthe expression of creativity and storytelling. Just ashow in the past Chinese export art garnered demandaround the world, its reinvention and moderninterpretations continue to fascinate the world todayand provoke visitors to consider how the past continuesto inspire the future. One dialogue could be found inthe ‘Gold is the Colour of My Soul’ section of theexhibition, through a pairing that explores prevalentBuddhist symbols in Chinese art, which Guo Pei hasdelicately incorporated into her 大金 (MagnificentGold). The dress has been hailed by the China NationalSilk Museum as “the birth of haute couture in China” forits technical mastery and incorporates elaborateembroideries, similar to the kind used to producethangkas (paintings or embroideries on scrolls)

depicting Buddhist deities and scenes. Guo Pei’s teamof artisans study the embroidery on historical thangkaslike this to refine their techniques.

(Magnificent Gold)

”Jackie Yoong 说道。

In another dialogue, in the section ‘China and theWorld’, we saw classic Chinese patterns of flowers, crests, and clouds, not just on precious blue-and-whiteporcelain, but also incorporated, using the samemethod of brush painting blue pigment, onto Guo Pei’ssculptural masterpiece 青花瓷 (Blue-and-WhitePorcelain).The continuation of Chinese artistic traditions and

culture by the Chinese diaspora was evident in themany cross-cultural masterpieces in this exhibition.Guo Pei’s bridal collection, which has been embraced byChinese celebrities and other wealthy clients, wasinspired by historical bridal ensembles made in Chinabut imported to Southeast Asia to be worn byPeranakan Chinese brides. One of her creations, shownin the ‘Treasured Heirlooms’ section, was the genesisfor this collaboration between ACM and Guo Pei.The couturière saw a bridal ensemble in the

Peranakan Museum’s travelling exhibition on PeranakanChinese art in Paris back in 2010. Her interpretation ofthat Peranakan bridal ensemble, worn by Angelababyfor her wedding, was seen by exhibition curator JackieYoong. She made the connection to the PeranakanMuseum’s historical bridal ensemble and then began toconceptualise this exhibition.“In this exhibition, fashion and history come full

circle. We see how the past inspires the present, we seehow traditions are revived and rejuvenated, and we seehow export objects and foreign ideas influence thelocal. I encourage visitors to take a close look at theincredible detail in Guo Pei’s fantastical works – to fullyexperience the devotion and dedication behind thethousands of hours of stitches required to make them”,said Ms Jackie Yoong.
