FOUR-NATION STAMP EXHIBITION

By Mr Prakit Foongvanich The Four-Nation Stamp Exhibition, organized by the Philatelic Society of Malaysia, was held from December 4 to 6, 2015 at the Dataran Pahlawan Mega Mall in Malacca. The philatelic associations of Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia have long collaborated, even beyond 2011, to popularize stamp collecting in their respective countries, bringing it on par with international standards. Thailand received the honor to hold the Tri-Nation Stamp Exhibition for the first time in Chiang Mai in 2011, with Singapore playing host to this event the following year. Subsequently, in 2013 the last Tri-Nation Stamp Exhibition was organized by Malaysia before the Indonesian Philatelists Association, the fourth member, joined in and agreed to host the first ever Four-Nation Stamp Exhibition at Bandung in 2014. Since then, the Tri-Nation Stamp Exhibition has thus been renamed the “Four-Nation Stamp Exhibition”. Taking place last year was the 2nd Four-Nation Stamp Exhibition (Malaysia 2015) hosted by Malaysia from December 4 to 6 at the Dataran Pahlawan Mega Mall, Malacca, under the slogan “Friendship through Philately”. The opening ceremony of Malaysia 2015 on December 4 featured a simple, relaxed and friendship filled atmosphere. Both Mr Tay Peng Hian (FIP President) and Mr Surajit Gongvatana (FIAP President) also visited the Exhibition. The inviting exhibition showcased a total of approximately 200 entries by contestants from different countries. A large number of visitors delighted in browsing through a wide selection of postage stamps and collectible items offered by postal services of member countries as well as private dealers, while enjoying a range of engaging activities. Such thrills and the enthusiasm of attendees throughout the three-day event was indeed a promising sign for the field of philately. The evening of December 5, or the Palmares Night, was the most important moment of this celebratory event as it featured the announcement of awards and the presentation ceremony. The evening started off with a welcoming remark delivered by the Chair of the ceremony, Dato Anuar Bashah. He also spoke about accomplishing the goals and objectives of holding the exhibition and later extended his gratitude to all participating philatelic associations of every member country. Finally, he handed souvenirs to the jurors and delegates of each country, before presenting award medals to the winners. This was followed by the presentation of the “Best Novice Exhibit” Award, which was offered to the exceptional exhibit by a first-time exhibitor. Mr. Choon Koshapasharin achieved the award with his masterpiece titled “Dutch East Indies: The China Connection; A Study of Chinese Postal History, 1858-1949”. The final award at the Palmares was the “Best in Show” Award, which was presented to the exhibit titled “World War I Siamese Postal History” by Mr. Charnchai Karnasuta, another Thai winner of the two great prizes in the contest. The finale of the Palmares was marked by the handover ceremony, where the flag was passed to the representatives of the Association of Singapore Philatelists, the next host of the Four-Nation Stamp Exhibition. As for Thailand’s participation, the P.A.T. appointed Mr. Prakit Foongvanich and Mr. Jenwit Apichainunt to serve as jurors, while Mr. Samart Waysuwan was the country’s commissioner who proudly carried 11 exhibits, amounting to 50 frames, by P.A.T. members to be on display at the philatelic exhibition.

Report on TAIPEI 2015 – the 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition

By Mr Lin Mao-Hsin TAIPEI 2015, the 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition was organized by Chinese Taipei Philatelic Federation, Chunghwa Post Co. Ltd. and Taiwan External Trade Development Council, which was held at Exhibition Hall 3, Taipei World Trade Centre from April 24 to 28, 2015. The exhibition, under the patronage of the FIAP and recognition of the FIP was attended by 23 countries from Asia and Oceania. On display were more than 1000 frames, including all FIP classes, One-Frame Exhibit, Modern Philately (1980 to date), invited, Honor Court and FIAP GP Club exhibits. The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Philip Ong, Chairperson of Chunghwa Post with the attendance of celebrities and guests of honor from all walks of life. Being well organized, the exhibition was crowded with collectors either for looking at exhibits or for limited sale items every day. English and Chinese exhibition tour guides were provided which enabled the visitors to enjoy the richness of philately. According to the OC, the total visits reached 250,000, the record high in Taiwan. Welcome dinner was on the night of April 24 with the grace attendance of Vice President Wu of the country. Great food, charming music and excellent performance left attending guests a memorable experience. One-day tour was arranged on the daytime of Palmares to Gold Mine Museum for everyone to experience the daily life of miners and eat the lunch box which miners used to have. After lunch, the box was souvenir for the guests. During the lunch, medals for Jury and Commissioners were given to appreciate their contribution to the exhibition. Most exciting to everyone was releasing Sky-Lantern for best wishes, a local custom which has lasted for a long time. Everyone could not wait to write down his best blessing and let go the lantern. As usual, Palmares night began with performance and good food. The highlight of Palmares is the announcement of GP winners. The Grand Prix National winner is Mr. Lin Tzu-Mu for his exhibit: Early New Taiwan Dollars Surcharged Issues, the Grand Prix International winner is Mr. Tan Eng Chuan from Singapore for his exhibit: Straits Settlements from Pre Stamp to 1900 and the Grand Prix d’Honneur winner is Mr Stephen Browne from Australia for his exhibit: The Postal History of New South Wales 1801-1849. After medal presentation, FIAP flap hand-over ceremony was carried on for Hong Kong 2015, the 31st Asian International Stamp Exhibition, to be held from 20 to 23 November, 2015. We would like to express our gratitude to those who involved in the exhibition for their contributions which made the exhibition a wonderful one. Chinese Taipei Philatelic Federation will hold PHILATAIPEI 2016 World Stamp Championship Exhibition in October; once again we welcome you to Taiwan to experience the hospitality shown by the people in Taiwan.
