Since the invention of photography in the 1830s, we have been fascinated by its potential to seemingly capture reality. Over time, as the ability to manipulate and reproduce photographs has become easier and more accessible, we are exposed to more images than ever before, and their objectivity has been called into question. Nevertheless, photography continues to hold a strong appeal.

October in Singapore is the month of photography, offering numerous opportunities to view some of the best and most innovative works of today. The many events and exhibitions not only provide the chance to reflect on photography as an artistic medium, but also to ponder – in a world saturated with images – what the future for this medium might be.

Not to be missed is the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF), a biennial event which aims to advance the art and appreciation of photography, particularly in Southeast Asia. The rich programme runs from the 3rd October – 30th November.

In conjunction with the SIPF, the renowned Milan Image Art (MIA) Fair is organising the MIA&D Fair at Marina Bay Sands from the 24th – 26th October, Singapore’s first ever international photography, video, and design art fair. This promises to be a dynamic event for all enthusiasts within the sector.

As Joan Miró has said, “You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life”. So don’t forget to check out the numerous other exciting events and exhibitions listed in the following pages, outlining this month’s opportunities for memorable artistic encounters. You can easily spot all the photography events, which have been highlighted with a black dot!

Breaking the Mold with Michelle LimBy Chelsea Chua

Ceramicist Michelle Lim is the latest addition to The Substation’s Associate Artist Research Programme (AARP). With clay as her preferred medium, her works address ideas that span across areas such as consumerism, community, and identity, leading to projects such as Awaken the Dragon, Singapore’s first ceramics festival. She speaks about her artistic motivations, and her preoccupation with food.

Chelsea Chua: Could you tell us a bit more about why you choose to specialise in ceramics, and what kind of issues you address through your work?

Michelle Lim: As my works have often been about addressing mass consumerism, awareness towards mass production (factory workers) or bringing attention to the individual, clay has been a voice for me as it is a material with a ready ability to multiply and create works en masse and yet be singular because of its process they are never identical. But the greatest allure has to be its magical ability to shape shift from liquid to solid, from 2D to 3D, and even from a state of impermanence to permanent – it is a world with endless possibilities.

CC: Tell us about your AARP project. What are you hoping to investigate though the project, and what inspired it?

ML: I have always worked with the notion of food in my works as I find that it encourages interaction and that it draws out more information from the audience, and thereby drawing out information about the work. With my time in AARP, I hope to question further of what other roles clay or ceramic take in the form of a serving vessel. Do the vessels contain certain characters because they are perceived to be handmade? And to what extent does our society understand 'handmade' oppose to 'factory' made. Do the vessels' perceived characters help lift an environment and its contents? These answers are to be drawn out from the audience through a series of curated meals.

CC: Any future projects you'd like to tell us about?

ML: A project that I am looking forward to is in 2015, as part of the Australian Ceramics Triannale, I will be setting up an interactive dining experience and this installation will be part of my research in AARP. It will be pretty exciting because of the unfamiliar audience. I am also working on the second installation of Awaken the Dragon, a community project that revolves around the last two dragon kilns and Singapore's history in ceramics. It is project that I co-founded with Post-Museum, as we felt that it was important for people to know about our early beginnings in this craft – who say Singapore last time no art!

“In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.” Robert Lynd

This insightful statement by Irish writer Robert Lynd aptly characterises Singapore-based artist Nandini Bajekal's exceptional devotion and endearment towards the winged and feathered creation of God – the bird.

The soft-spoken artist, with her pair of tilted smiling lips, shares: “Painting for me is a spiritual experience. The beauty and grandeur of nature is a great source of inspiration. In the glory of nature, I find a deep sense of peace and happiness. My paintings explore the spectacular stories that the natural world reveals to us, stimulating us to love, nurture and protect nature.”

Nandini's verbal revelation is substantiated by the fact that she is indeed a staunch bird-watcher, who relishes every living moment of the birds that she observes and studies with such great zeal and zest. Apparently and metaphorically, the 'spectacular stories' that the birds offer her, are re-contextualised into static but enticing visual manifestations within the frame of her canvas.

Nandini is armed with a Bachelors Degree in Applied Arts from Sir J J School of Art in Mumbai (India), and a Diploma in Cinema from Xaviers Institute of Communications in Mumbai. Having had lived in Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa for more than twenty

years, Nandini has had her fair share of corporate practice as she has worked in the creative department of a major international advertising agency and as a dedicated freelance designer. Over the past twenty-five years, Nandini has travelled to several natural landscapes in India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia and South America. During such expeditions, Nandini mentions, “I sketch, paint and soak-in the sights and sounds of the natural world”. perceptions of the natural world via the creative mode of stylisation, and that too, with the tactful inclusion of geometry.

Triangle. This amazing shape defines the very basis of geometry. And geometry, defines the very essence of the formal rendition of cubism in art. Staying loyal to her beloved vertebrate-metaphor, Nandini has created an impressive work of art; an oil-on-canvas entitled Aves Otium (meaning 'Bird Contemplating' in Latin) which reverberates the vivacity of a grand three-angled perspective; in an undisputedly cubist manner. Red is matched with green, with due respect to their perpetual status as complimentary hues in basic colour theory. The bird – the hero of the painting, is able to maintain and exude an ethereal presence; a stance of understated grace amidst the expected rigidity of the interplay of geometry. Even the pupil of its eye accommodates a triangle; insinuating an alluring twinkle.

The notion of nature is as subjective as anything and everything that life can offer. An attempt to convincingly define nature is as ambitious as attempting to arrive at a supremely irrefutable explanation on what art is. It is indeed fascinating that the all-encompassing natural world comes quite naturally to Nandini.

The first European photographers to travel to the East arrived first in Singapore before settling in different cities in the region; an unremitting traffic that enabled Singapore to become a hub for photographic practice throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The month of photography has arrived in Singapore. Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF), the biennial gathering of minds from around the world with the common pursuit of advancing the art and appreciation of photography, turns 4 this year. Works by 47 photographers from 23 countries will be featured in the main showcase of the biggest photography festival in Southeast Asia, including works by four Singaporean photographers: Carrie Lam, Darren Soh, Ore Huiying and Zinkie Aw. The showcase exhibition is presented from 3 October to 30 November at the National Museum of Singapore, 2902 Gallery, Chapel Gallery, and at the Festival Village at DECK.

In partnership with SIPF, ArtScience Museum shows two photography exhibitions: Flux Realities: A Showcase of Chinese Contemporary Photography, a specially curated exhibition showcasing the works of both well-established as well as emerging Chinese photographers till 2nd November, and An Ocean of Possibilities, which is an international open call partnership between SIPF and the renowned Noorderlicht International Photofestival in Netherlands.

Marking the unfolding of a diaristic account of Singapore life in a hundred days, the exhibition 100 Days of Living accumulates pictures contributed by Singaporeans taken from daily life and social encounters. These images are shown at the Basement of National Library from 17 to 31 October 2014.

SIPF 2014, themed The Infitiy, aims to be a much needed arena for critical thought and academic discussion on photography in Southeast Asia. SIPF also functions as a key platform to discover, nurture, and propel Southeast Asian photographers onto the international stage. Through its satellite programmes, the festival hopes to engage the public and cultivate a larger audience. SIPF has programmed a line-up of workshops and seminars conducted by established curators, editors, and photographers. Open to both emerging and established photographers, every workshop is tailored to impart skills and to guide participants towards a clearer vision in their works. At the core of SIPF is a firm belief that photography can be enjoyed by all, and there sure is something for everybody in the comprehensive program of this year's festival.

Concomitant with the Singapore International Photography Festival, the renowned Milan Image Art Fair (MIA Fair) is organising MIA&D Fair, the first photography, video and design art fair in Singapore from 24 – 26 October 2014.

Following the success of the MIA Fair in Italy, which was conceived in 2011 by Fabio Castelli, the fair in Singapore includes curatorial sections such as the MIA Proposal Section, containing the works of artists who exhibit without the support of galleries, and the Mekong Platform with artists from Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam. The Design Section of MIA&D Fair Singapore showcases collectible furniture and objects from several galleries, proposing a new dialogue between design and photography.

“Singapore has established itself as the central arts hub in Asia Pacific and is known as the key connector for business across Asian cultures, making it the perfect location for our first- ever overseas exhibition,” says Fabio Castelli, Founder and Director of MIA&D Fair.

Among the participating galleries from Singapore is Australian-born photographer Sealey Brandt, who is based in Singapore. Her photography fine art prints have been bought by over 1,000 collectors worldwide, among them the Castelli family, the owners of MIA&D Fair. Sealey will send part of her proceeds to a Mongolian children’s charity.

Also participating in MIA&D is Sundaram Tagore Gallery, an internationally renowned gallery with spaces in Singapore, Hong Kong and New York City. The gallery brings a roster of world-class talent to the fair, including Sebastião Salgado, whose Genesis show has been a top draw at the National Museum of Singapore, Annie Leibovitz, whose work is shown till October 19th, 2014 at Singapore’s ArtScience Museum, and acclaimed Canadian photo-grapher Edward Burtynsky, who chronicles human impact on nature in his disarmingly beautiful images of industrial landscapes.

“We’re thrilled to have this new, international fair to bring the work of our gallery photographers to wider audien-ces,” says gallery president and curator Sundaram Tagore. “Photography is an exciting area for collectors and this is a great opportunity for collectors in the region to see a lot of high-quality work.”

Still Moving:A Triple Bill on the Image

Singapore Art Museum presents in one space three co-curated exhibitions focusing on the nature of the image, as explored in the art of photography and new media. As key contemporary practices of visual culture, photography and the moving image are also highly democratic mediums, due to their immediacy, accessibility and mutability.

In Afterimage: Contemporary Photography from Southeast Asia, artists use non-traditional photographic techniques to articulate concerns about the cultural, political and social landscapes of the region.

In Time Present: Photography from the Deutsche Bank Collection, the works of renowned international artists show the multiple possibilities of photography in history over time.

Image & Illusion: Video Works from the Yokohama Museum of Art features experimental new media works that expand their subject matter beyond the limits of the medium and representation. The selections of works in these three exhibitions examine the very premise of image-making and show its potential.

Organised by SAM, the three presentations at the museum are in partnership with the Singapore International Photography Festival, Deutsche Bank, and the Yokohama Museum of Art respectively. Visitors will be able to experience an entire museum space dedicated to the art of image, as well as enjoy artist talks, critic and curator panels, a mobile darkroom, and various educational and public outreach programmes.

Quintessential French fashion label agnès b. celebrates its 10th anniversary in Singapore with the agnès b. PUNK+ Photo Exhibition, which is shown at The Substation from 2 – 26 October, before traveling to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The exhibition showcases a selection of 28 photos curated from legendary photographer Sheila Rock’s book, PUNK+ – a visual document of the punk and New Wave movement in London, a revolutionary catalyst that transformed contemporary culture for the world of fashion, music and art.

Designer Agnès has long been an avid protagonist of the arts with a keen interest in street culture. Her famous fans include a bold pack of contemporary artists such as musician and activist Yoko Ono, pop culture phenomenon David Bowie, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and actress Helena Bonham Carter. For over 30 years, agnès b. has created an image to not only represent the chic and timeless but also the contemporary, modern and cutting-edge in its support for art, film and music. The agnès b. Agnès worked closely with photographer Sheila Rock and her publisher from FIRSTHIRDBOOKS to launch the PUNK+ photo exhibition tour, which began in London and Paris in 2013 and now continues to Asia. Having worked in close proximity with iconic artists, Rock has been able to capture the unpretentious, raw and creative energy of the punk movement in her photographs.

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to take home a piece of the punk culture from the pop-up store that will be erected beside the exhibition at The Substation Gallery.

An art of sublime themes, colourful backgrounds and subtle emotions, Indian miniatures have a lyrical quality that captures the mind and soul. Using a wide range of vocabulary of symbols and characters, the Indian miniaturists created delicatepaintings that served both important religious and secular functions.

Often executed as illustrations of texts, portraits and simple genre scenes, these miniatures are masterpieces in their own right and are as much a part of traditional Indian art as the large murals in the Indian palaces. Small in size but meticulous in detail and delicate in brushwork, Indian miniature paintings are to be savoured slowly, intently and privately.

The exhibition at Galerie Belvedere presents the private collection of 16th to 19th century Indian miniature paintings of Mr Fozdar. He is the son of famed women’s rights activists Shirin Fozdar, who founded the Singapore Council of Women’s charter instituted in 1961. The Mumbai-born American citizen is a Singapore permanent resident who has lived here since 1987.

The miniatures – some of which were painted with colour pigments made of crushed rubies, emeralds, pearls and gold – were amassed by Jamshed K. Fozdar over 4 decades.

The featured works depict scenes from Indian history and mythology. There are also portraits of Indian royalty and courtesans.The collection includes paintings from three categories: the Moghul court paintings, the Rajasthan paintings from the regions of Mewar, Jaipur and Kishangar, and the Pahari paintings from the hill courts of Punjab such as Basholi, Guler and Kangra.

Pearl Lam Galleries presents the first ever solo exhibition in Asia by British artist Peter Peri, who has created a new series of large-scale paintings for the show. Equal in size, the paintings are built up by a dense monochrome screen of horizontal lines, bordered by a single black vertical strip, and maintain the artist’s ongoing engagement with a psychologically charged modernism.

In considering his first exhibition in Asia, Peri began to think about the French esoteric writer René Guénon, from whose 1953 book, The Reign of Quantity, the exhibition takes its title. In particular, Peri was drawn to Guénon’s description of the orthogonal cross as a symbol of 'universal man' in Eastern and Western traditions. Peri has always been fascinated by the moment of intersection between the lines of a cross form, and their ability to become a paradoxical point where unity and division coexist – where a position is marked and also somehow concealed. Furthering this line of thought, Peri explored Guénon’s explanation of the Taoist conception of the three dimensional, right angled cross, where the vertical represents the ‘will of heaven’, and the horizontal line represent a profile vision of the circles of Taoist individual lives. These paintings, made of single vertical and multiple horizontal lines should not, however, be viewed as illustrations of Guénon’s formula, but rather as manifestations within abstraction of the continuous hiding/revealing dynamic at the point of intersection, which function here as a mechanism to explore shifting relationships between symbolism, abstraction, and figuration.

Peri, whose grandfather was a Constructivist, has a personal relationship to early modernism. He continually disrupts and disorients in his work, and sees the subject of his work as “dissolution, or more precisely the fetishisation of dissolution, within modernity”. Each element of these works is interdependent, and cannot be isolated from the overall composition, which handles space with such complexity that the viewer is at once pushed to the surface of the work and the detail of the pen line, and simultaneously pulled into a seemingly infinite dimension.

Peri has worked consistently with the paint-markers and spray paint he first discovered as a young graffiti artist in London. In this new series, a single marker pen colour becomes the ostensible

subject of each painting through a meticulous buildup of parallel lines that cover the length of the canvas. The manual imperfection of this drawing process leads to a ‘flickering effect’ – a horizontal movement of colour that shifts and dissolves as we approach it – giving the paintings a tentative life of their own.

Speaking of Peri, Martin Herbert, art critic for Artforum and Frieze, and European Editor of Modern Painters states, “His artworks suggest, but never reduce themselves to, an externalised entity, an embodied intelligence that stands in confrontation with the viewer, even when the work is seemingly near-abstract." In these paintings the accumulation of strokes that merge into brightly artificial colour fields create explicitly optical works where colour stands both as a cosmetic and as a dissolving element - something beyond language and individuation.

About the Artist: Peter Peri was born in 1971 in London, UK. He graduated from a Master’s Fine Art programme at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London in 2003. Currently, he lives and works in London, UK. Peri’s primary mediums are drawing, sculpture and painting: three distinct bodies of work which explore the tension between line and volume, figuration and abstraction, and the question of tradition and influence in Modernism.

MAD – Museum of Art & Design – will relocate to a grand new venue in November a move which paves the way for even bolder ventures from what has already proven to be an innovative space for art and design in Singapore. The opening exhibition will feature eighteen established and emerging artists from all over the world, making it a major art and cultural exchange event, and a fitting start to this exciting new chapter.

The award-winning MAD is Singapore’s first private museum, and in only five years has developed quite a reputation for itself as offering some of the most refreshing line-ups of events and exhibitions celebrating the best of art, design, and life. In its new location in the 19,000 square foot, two-storey mega gallery in the heart of Orchard at Tanglin Road, MAD will continue to provide an environment conducive to endless creativity and change, and a nurturing space where ideas and new art concepts are generated and formed.

In particular, MAD aims to foster and elevate Singapore’s status as an art and design hub in South East Asia. MAD will continue to offer a strong showcase for emerging Singaporean and Asian talents by dedicating its new space to promoting their unique styles, and providing a much needed support platform with its artist-in-residence programme.

The coming year promises a diverse programme of shows, exhibitions, events, workshops, talks and more. With amenities such as a merchandise store, sculpture garden, exclusive cigar bar and lounge, and café, the museum is now more than ever a must-go destination for arts and culture, a good spot for leisure, as well as a great venue for events and launches. The goal of MAD has always been centred on fostering a broader appreciation for art and design by making the world of art more accessible to people from all walks of life. The move to a bigger, centrally located address, which integrates fine art and design with emerging art forms and urban lifestyle elements, offers even more opportunities for it to do so.

For ‘Singled Out’, 50 local designers and artists transformed vinyl records into pieces of artwork. The artists were invited to revisit their own personal soundtrack and to pick out a song that has made a positive impact in their lives.

The selected piece may range from a track that has inspired their personal or career triumphs, to a song that may have comforted them through tough times.

The artists were challenged to turn the vinyl records and sleeves provided into pieces of artwork. They were free to imagine the many possibilities, from painting the vinyls to creating a sculpture made entirely out of the records.

Presented by tcc – The Connoisseur Concerto, the exhibition is conceptualised by creative agency fFurious, and developed in collaboration with events organisation art-management.com and Thunder Rock School.

The project also serves to reunite the forgotten ties between music and design. The music of today tends to ignore the visual aesthetic, and through ‘Singled Out’ the designers and artists hope to promote the visual aspect of music, giving the vinyl record a new lease of life.

The artworks are on display within the relaxing and cosy atmosphere of tcc’s two-storey boutique caffè for patrons to visit and bid on the artworks for charity if they so please. An online auction will be conducted on singledout.ffurious.com (website will launch on October 16) with each unique piece put on a starting bid of SGD 200.

All proceeds from the artworks will go to funding the musical journey of financially disadvantaged youths. All proceeds will be managed by Thunder Rock School, who will be setting up a music education outreach program specifically catered to financially disadvantaged children.

Presented by tcc – The Connoisseur Concerto, tcc’s Business Development Vice President Abbey Chang mentioned that tcc – The Connoisseur Concerto ‘The Gallery’ is proud to play host to the heartfelt initiative by artists who extend their inspiration for the arts, through supporting the music education of disadvantaged youths. As both Leo Hee Tong and Singapore approach milestone birthdays in 2015, there could be no better way to celebrate this award-winning artist’s contribution to the local art scene than through a rare solo exhibition of his works spanning from the 1980s.

Born in 1940, Leo’s interest in art first blossomed as a child studying in Pei Chun Primary School. The seeds of interest were sown by school principal, Mr Foo Tuck Sun, whose drawings in class left a great impression on Leo.

However, it was his mentorship under the late artist Mr Cheong Soo Pieng in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts that would substantially influence his artistic style in years to come. Traces of Cheong’s impact on Leo’s paintings can still be found even today.

After some time, Leo decided that he needed to break away from the Nanyang art style, which focused heavily on depicting

the Balinese culture. Fortuitously, in 1973 the People’s Association awarded him a scholarship to study fine art at the Ashiya Art College in Japan. This trip proved to be the turning point in his life.

Leo’s stay in Japan exposed him to original paintings by famous Western artists such as Van Gogh and Picasso for the first time. Inspired by these encounters, Leo started to further develop his painting techniques by incorporating Western abstract and cubist elements into his art pieces.

This enchantment shaped Leo’s now-signature art style, inspired by the frosty winter days of his youth. With smatterings of white, Leo conjures up the serene calm of snowflakes in the wind.

Syrinx is a joint exhibition by Alison Wilson and Dominic Fondé, two British artists who met while living and working in Singapore. The project came about through a shared interest in birds and a passion for visual arts. Both artists use drawings as the starting point for their work but explore the imagery further by using printmaking techniques and glass engraving to add layers of depth, meaning and atmosphere.

The works created for this show feature images of birds local to Singapore, such as the Koel and Kingfisher, birds that are critically endangered such as the Bali Starling, and birds renowned for their song such as the Mocking Bird and Nightingale. Alison and Dominic state that the aim of these works is to explore the beauty of birds and birdsong and highlight what might be lost if these birds are not protected. The title, Syrinx, describes the vocal apparatus of a bird.

Alison Wilson is a visual artist whose work reflects her interest in natural history subjects, patterns in nature and the human desire to interact with and leave a mark on the landscape. The main focus of her art practice is drawing and printmaking, particularly etching. Her work has been exhibited in UK, Spain and Singapore and many private collections. She has lived and worked in Singapore since 2001.

Dominic Fondé is a professional glass artist who has been working with blown and engraved glass art since the mid 1990s. He has many of his artworks in public and private collections in the United Kingdom and Europe. He lives and works in Singapore and Japan.

In the present time of surfacing ecological crisis, environmental issues are increasingly addressed in contemporary art. With extreme climate changes which eventually lead to habitat loss, it is inevitable that global warming remains as one of the greatest challenges of our time.

Chinese contemporary artist Shen Shu Bin loves life and often ponders on the impacts of habitat loss. In his recent oil paintings, art and nature interweave to depict the vulnerability and fragility of our living environment. His works bring to our attention the diversity of the natural world and beckon us to commune with them. His thoughts on the current environmental issues faced by both humans and animals are reflected in his expressive sweeping strokes of paint.

Through this exhibition, the artist hopes to heighten social awareness on the importance of rectifying our consumption behaviour to build a sustainable environment. As we move forward, his artworks remind us that we are all part of this world and everyone has a role to play to make it a better place.

Born in the province of Shanxi in 1978, Shen Shu Bin graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Shanxi University’s College of Fine Arts, and obtained a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. Currently teaching at the Art and Design Department of the Beijing Youth Politics College, his paintings have been exhibited in Beijing, Taiyuan, Shanghai, Berlin, and Singapore, as well as at the National Art Exhibition in 2002, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Mao Zedong’s speech at the Yan’an Forum on Literature and Art. One of his outstanding pieces won him the recognition of Tianjin’s Top Ten Outstanding Youths in Arts in 2005.

Among Opera Gallery Singapore's most successful exhibitions was the Marc Chagall solo show in 2000, followed by the annual Master Exhibition, which is held in conjunction with the Formula 1 Night Race this year.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Opera Gallery is known for showing high-value contemporary European paintings and sculptures as well as for spotting market trends on a global scale, encouraging the rise of Asian arts in the region. Asian masters like Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh Chun are among the artists shown regularly at the gallery.

Adorning the walls for this year's Master Exhibition at Opera Gallery's newly launched space on Level 4 at ION Orchard will be works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Marc Quinn, just to name a few.

In addition to this esteemed collection of artworks, 20 monumental sculptures grace the promenades of Orchard Road. These include sculptures by Salvador Dali, Marc Quinn and Pierre Matter.

“I am creating imagined, disordered spaces out of these perfectly ordered, often highly aestheticized rooms, basically turning a real space that has been created to be useful and legible into a nonsensical, defamiliarized space.” Dane Patterson

Born in 1978 in Indiana, Dane Patterson is celebrated for his graphite drawings on paper that depict meticulously arranged rooms of hypothetical households. Elaborating on the tradition of still life, Patterson builds his hyper-realistic compositions from a foundation of photographs taken either by him when visiting grand historical homes or taken from highly-aestheticized interior design catalogues. The artist’s imagined scenes are structured around real rooms belonging to the homes of real people, including Aerin Lauder, granddaughter of legendary businesswoman Estée Lauder. In an ironic twist, even though Patterson’s sources purport to capture the spirit of the house-owner through their aesthetic taste, the artist’s bizarre compositions eliminate the human presence and instead draw energy from the spirit of the still life within.

Using these carefully constructed, pre-existing domestic spaces as a stage, the artist manipulates the setting by re-arranging the objects and placing them in unanticipated situations. Patterson’s hypothetical arrangements highlight the banality of domestic structures by re-assembling their constituents, the household objects, into scenarios that defy their usual function. In this world, why shouldn’t a chair seat another chair? Why shouldn’t a rug be pinned to the wall as decoration? When the laws are changed and definitions are re-evaluated, nonsense can then begin to make sense.

Dane Patterson was born in Columbus, Indiana in 1978. He graduated from IUPUI Herron School of Art in Indianapolis in 2002 and pursued a M.F.A. from School of Visual Arts in New York. His awards and distinctions include the Artist Fellowship in Drawing, Printmaking and Book Arts by New York Foundation for Arts (2009), and the MacDowell Colony Residency and Fellowship (2010). Dane Patterson has participated in numerous exhibitions including Galerie Bertrand & Gruner in Geneva, The Proposition Gallery and Exit Art in New York City, and Gallery 32 in London. The artist lives and works in New York City, USA.

Face Me Solo exhibition by Shin Kwang Ho

Face Me is the first solo exhibition in South East Asia by up-and-coming Korean artist Shin Kwang Ho. The exhibition showcases a series of new oil paintings andcharcoal drawings, and inaugurates Yavuz Gallery's new space at the Gillman Barracks art cluster.

Shin Kwang Ho is one of Asia's most sought-after young artists, known for his expressive painting style, characterised by bold strokes of oil paint that is applied in a thick impasto, an arresting use of vivid, primary colours, and a focus on his subjects' eyes. Influenced by the German Expressionism movement, Shin believes that realism captures only the likeness of the model, rather than their emotions or those of the artist. Deliberately disregarding precise form and harmonious colour, he uses distortion and exaggeration to express and extend the inner life of his subjects into external reality.

For Face Me, Shin has created a number of figurative paintings in his trademark style. In a series of large-scale self-portraits, his own features meld together into colourful peaks and swirls, on lush and tactile canvases that draw viewers in for closer examination. In his portraits of other people – whether friends, family, acquaintances or strangers – Shin captures his own energy and emotions through movement and the application of paint, essentially transforming each image into an expression of himself. With these larger-than- life-sized self-portraits, the artist is required, along with the viewers, to look at himself in a very different, startling way. Complementing these self-portraits is a pair of paintings that depict his parents' hands. Standing out amongst the faces, these two works serve as a poignant and quietly moving tribute to the hands that raised him.

Shin Kwang Ho (b. 1983) received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea in 2009. His works have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Korea, Germany and the USA. This is his first solo exhibition in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Since its inception in 2011, Art Stage Singapore has incorporated a matchmaking platform with arts as its unifying element for the local community. The Art Stage Salon hosts a series of receptions with guest speakers and specific themes on a regular basis.

Dating back to the 1870s in France, and made famous by prominent historical figures such as the American writer Gertrude Stein, Salons are events that have traditionally served as important platforms designed for notable members of society to come together to exchange ideas.

In the month of August, a panel discussion with the topic Singapore Art: Going Where? was organised in partnership with Yavuz Fine Art. It sought to address the importance of exploring the standing of Singaporean art and its potential in the Southeast Asian as well as global context. The panelists included gallery owner Can Yavuz, artist Michael Lee, Singaporean collector Dr John Chia, and was moderated by Lorenzo Rudolf, founder and director of Art Stage Singapore.

Comparing Singapore to the other Southeast Asian counter parts, we were considered a very constricted nation; even from the view point of outsiders. Although the environment was semi-free back in the 1980s, there was a lack of opportunities for Singaporean artists to develop and showcase their art. For this main reason, Can Yavuz was prompted to set up his own art gallery in Singapore to provide the necessary and essential support for the many talented and budding local artists. Some would reason that Singapore is still a young country, but sometimes it feels like it is just a poor excuse used to cover up the focus placed on other national priorities like economic success and better education. Michael Lee mentioned about artists including himself turning to foreign lands to pursue their art practice for more opportunities and inspiration, for example taking up art residencies. He added that the overseas exposure aided in instilling a sense of belonging in him that not only nurtured his artistic ability and integrity; it taught him to view Singapore from the "outside".

However, when we question where Singapore art is going, we should not underestimate the potential that we possess. In the last four to five years, marked growth and support has been observed

in the visual arts circle. Certain indicators include the presence of several recurring art fairs (Art Stage Singapore, Affordable Art Fair, Art Apart Fair, Singapore Art Fair, etc.) and art festivals (Singapore Biennale, Singapore International Festival of Arts, Singapore Night Festival, Singapore International Photography Festival, etc.), an increase in the number of visual art gallery clusters (Gillman Barracks, Galleries at Raffles Hotel Arcade, Helutrans Art Space, etc.), more Singaporean artists doing residencies overseas and additionally solo and collaborative exhibitions worldwide. Dr Chia also highlighted that collectors such as himself have slowly become more receptive to local contemporary works that were once viewed as too complex and challenging to appreciate. Overall, the outlook is positive and Singapore has managed to establish herself as an arts and cultural hub. But moving forward, influential people such as political and cultural leaders need to be relied upon to make important changes, so as to diversify and mould the arts industry towards maturity.

"If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him." Lorenzo Rudolf aptly concluded the discussion with this famous quote by John F. Kennedy. So as we continue to ponder on the question of where Singapore art is going in the Asian and global context, let us also reconsider the position of artists as cultural intermediaries, and creators, who play a vital role in influencing the standing of Singapore Art.
