ABOUT SINGAPORE FILM COMMISSION The SFC was formed in 1998 and is part of the Media Development Authority (MDA)

since 2003. It is spearheaded by a panel of members from the film, arts

and cultural community, and is supported by a Secretariat within the MDA.

The SFC has, over the years, supported more than 600 short films, scripts, feature

films, as well as film-related events in Singapore that showcase homegrown talent

and works. Some notable films by Singapore filmmakers include Ilo Ilo (Anthony

Chen), Ah Boys to Men (Jack Neo), Sandcastle (Boo Junfeng), and 881 (Royston Tan).

SINGAPORE FILM INDUSTRY

*Each year, L’Atelier selects about 15 feature length projects from around the world, and invites their directors to the Festival de Cannes in order to put them in

contact with film professionals. The filmmakers are selected according to the quality of their project and that of their previous films, as well as on the state of

progress of their finance plan. The programme will enable them to gain access to international financing and speed up the production process.

CELEBRATE, CONNECT In celebration of Singapore’s 50th birthday, local filmmakers are excited to tell the nation’s story through their work. In 2015, cinemagoers can look out for titles such as 1965 and 7 Letters. Veteran producer Daniel Yun’s latest film 1965 is set to bring the audience back in time through the stories of immigrants and natives during Singapore’s struggle for independence. 7 Letters, a collection of seven short stories jointly put together by seven talented local directors, presents a unique interpretation of Singapore and the lives of its people.

Many of the compelling stories by local filmmakers are inspired by the shared memories and experiences of Singaporeans. A Singapore 50 project, Spotlight on Singapore Cinema, will restore four iconic films from the 1950s to the 1970s. These films will take to the screens in the second half of 2015.

2015 will see Singapore’s screens brightly lit with a yearlong showcase of celebration, pioneering, and variety. Local cinemagoers will see a total of 24 feature film releases in the year, and these include the third installment of the hugely successful Ah Boys to Men series, titled Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen, and Kelvin Tong’s Hollywood debut, The Faith of Anna Waters. With such a vibrant and robust line up starting the end of this year through to next year, the Singapore film industry will definitely be one to look out for.

BLOSSOMING FILM INDUSTRY As the landscape for Singapore’s media industry flourishes, so does our nation’s aptitude and passion for film. Building on the momentum set by Anthony Chen’s Ilo Ilo, Singapore filmmakers continue to tell stories that resonate with audiences in Asia and beyond. We look forward to 2015 as an exciting year for the Singapore film industry — from heartfelt stories that celebrate Singapore and its people, to local talent and film companies venturing into international terrain and gaining recognition at film awards and screenings around the world.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS In December 2014, Singapore saw the launch of the inaugural Singapore Media Festival (SMF), a marquee film and TV event that brought together four complementary events – Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF), ScreenSingapore (SS), Asian Television Awards (ATA), and Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). The umbrella event provides a platform to showcase the best of Southeast Asian content, opening up more opportunities for international players to look to Asia as a valued partner in content creation and recognising Singapore as a burgeoning market and gateway to the region. The year 2014 also saw another milestone for Singapore’s film industry, with two upcoming Hollywood blockbusters, Agent 47 and Equals, partially shot and produced on our shores. Singaporeans can expect to see iconic locations like Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and Chinatown on the big screen when Agent 47 and Equals premiere in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

SUPPORT FOR LOCAL FILMS The Singapore Film Commission (SFC) nurtures, supports, and promotes Singapore talent in filmmaking and the production of films. It administers the New Talent Feature Grant (NTFG), which supports new filmmakers in developing feature films. Of the first batch of NTFG award recipients, three talented local directors — Ric Aw, K.Rajagopal, and Jason Lai are set to release their debut feature films. Ric and Jason’s films, titled Standing in Still Water and Ms J Contemplates Her Choice respectively, made their premiere under the Singapore Panorama section of the 25th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). At the Cannes Film Festival 2014, K. Rajagopal became the only Asian director out of a total of 15 international directors selected for the prestigious Cinefondation L’Atelier* for A Yellow Bird, which tells a story about an ex-convict looking for societal acceptance after seven years in prison.

Royston Tan is an award-winning Singapore filmmaker who is hailed as one of the most promising talents in the local filmmaking industry. Most of Royston’s works focus on social issues and seek to challenge the boundaries of societal expectations. synopsis

A story of two young Chinese Seventh Month “Ge Tai” singers - the Papaya Sisters, and their journey to become two of the most popular “Ge Tai” artistes in Singapore. The two friends work closely together to succeed in their careers. They have to overcome many obstacles, including their families’ objection to their occupation. However, a greater challenge awaits as the two friends become entwined in a love triangle. A fight for survival results when one of them is diagnosed with cancer.

Boo Junfeng 巫俊锋

Boo Junfeng is one of Singapore’s notable young filmmakers. His debut feature film Sandcastle premiered at Cannes Film Festival’s International Critics’ Week in 2010, and was subsequently invited to film festivals around the world. Trained in film schools in Singapore and Spain, his works often centre on themes of identity, memory, and sexuality. His short films have won several awards at the Singapore International Film Festival since 2005, and he is currently preparing for his second feature film, Apprentice, slated for release in 2015.

Tatsumi celebrates the life and work of Japanese comic artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi. In post-war Japan, young Tatsumi’s passion for comics eventually becomes a means of supporting his poor family. Already a published comic artist as a teenager, talented Tatsumi finds even greater inspiration after meeting his idol – the famous Disneyesque animator Osamu Tezuka. Despite his success, Tatsumi begins to question why Japanese comics should cater to children with cute and whimsical tales and drawings. In 1957, Tatsumi coins the term “gekiga” (dramatic pictures) and redefines the manga landscape by introducing an alternative genre for adults. Realistic and disquieting, Tatsumi’s work begins to grapple with the darker aspects of life.

Eric Khoo put Singapore on the international film map with his first two films, Mee Pok Man and 12 Storeys, which have together been screened at over 60 film festivals held all over the world and won numerous festival awards. His third feature, Be With Me, opened Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2008. My Magic, his next film, was nominated for the Palme D’Or in Cannes’ official selection. In 2012 Eric was Jury President at the Asian Film Awards and Rotterdam International Film Festival and was head of the Jury at Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival 2013.

She co-created Extraordinary People, winner of an Asian TV Award for Best Documentary Series. Jack Neo 梁智强

Jack Neo is one of Singapore’s veteran filmmakers. His contributions to the local film industry have earned him honourable mentions during former Prime Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong’s national address in 1998 and 2003. In recognition of his achievements and contributions towards Singapore’s media industry, Jack was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 and the Multi-Talent Award in 2004 from MediaCorp Singapore in the Star Awards. He also received the Public Service Medal Award in August 2004 and the Arts Cultural Medallion Award in October 2005.

Anthony Chen 陈哲艺

Anthony Chen was trained in film schools in Singapore and Britain. His short films have screened at numerous prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, and Busan amongst others. His second short film – Ah Ma (Grandma) – was nominated for the Palme d’Or for Short Film at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, and secured a Special Mention – the first time a Singaporean filmmaker was awarded in Cannes. Most recently, he was awarded the prestigious Caméra d’Or at Cannes for his first feature length film, Ilo Ilo, receiving an unanimous vote by the jury. The film gained widespread acclaim and recognition when it became an arthouse favourite, winning 40 awards internationally, including four awards at the 50th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.

Liao Jiekai 廖捷凯

A partner of the 13 Little Pictures collective, Liao Jiekai is a filmmaker and artist based in Singapore. Jiekai’s 2010 debut feature film, Red Dragonflies, won the Special Jury Prize at the Jeonju International Film Festival and was selected for competition at various film festivals such as Buenos Aires, Santiago, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo. Jiekai was conferred the Young Artist Award for Film by the National Arts Council of Singapore in 2012. In 2013, he was invited to participate in the Singapore Biennale with the video installation Bukit Orang Salah. As You Were is his second feature film.

Han Yew Kwang is a Singapore writer-director who started out as a scriptwriter with national broadcaster Television Corporation of Singapore (now known as MediaCorp TV). Set against the backdrop of Koh Samui, the film examines companionship despite the absence of a common language – at different points, characters speak Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Chai Yee Wei is a Singaporean filmmaker who started his career writing and shooting short films, which garnered attention in the local circuits for their quirkiness and dark subject matter. Blood Ties: The Short Film launched his filmmaking career when it was picked up by Oak3 Films and the Singapore Film Commission to be made into a full-length movie. The movie screened commercially in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. Yee Wei followed up with several features Twisted, which was released in Singapore in August 2011, and That Girl in Pinafore in August 2013.

Wayang Boy is a family comedy about Singaporeans living amidst the influx of foreign immigrants. Caught in the hoo-ha is an Indian boy, Raja. Raymond Tan is the Founder and Managing Director of Brainchild Pictures. A self-taught filmmaker, Raymond’s maiden project is the short film, Wa is for Wayang (2011), the longest showing short film at the Singapore Discovery Centre. The film is supported by the Singapore Film Commission. In 2014, Raymond collaborated with mm2 Entertainment to direct his debut feature film, the similarly-titled Wayang Boy.

Gilbert is an award-winning writer/director/trainer residing in Singapore. His writing accolades include the top prize in the Singapore Screenplay Awards in 2001 and the merit award at the MDA Scriptwriting Competition in 2002. He is also the producer, writer, and director of the digital movie S11. S11 is the official selection at the Shanghai International Film Festival 2006 and also won the audience choice award at the Toronto-Singapore film festival. His second movie, Love Matters, which he co-directed with Jack Neo, was a box office success in Malaysia and Singapore. His movie 23:59 (2011), which he wrote and directed, was a critical success and popular with the Singapore audience.

Her short films include the award-winning Who Loves the Sun which premiered at Clermont-Ferrand. Ah Min, a 23-year-old budding fashion photographer, visits her grandmother’s photo studio one day before it closes for good. There, she discovers four old photographs. Best known for his award-winning 1999 kung-fu motorcycle movie, Eating Air, Kelvin Tong is a brand name in cutting-edge Singapore cinema. Kelvin has had an illustrious film career, with notable achievements such as Best Short Film Award at the 1995 Singapore International Film Festival Silver Screen Awards even at the start of his journey. Between 1995 and 1999, Kelvin was the film critic for the Singapore national English daily, The Straits Times. Kelvin produced Chai Yee Wei’s award-winning short film My Blue Heaven, The Forgotten, a mid-length film produced by Eusoff Works, the film production arm of Eusoff Hall at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Steadfast, an indie action film boasting an international cast. Kelvin has been working closely with Singapore Media Academy, the Substation, Canon Singapore, and the British Council to support and promote filmmaking. He has also curated film screenings for several organisations including the Toronto-Singapore Film Festival. Kelvin’s recent projects includes music videos for Maia Lee and singer-songwriter Eddie Chow, as well as his new mini feature film Fairytales, which premiered at the 24th Singapore International Film Festival.

Chai Yee Wei is a Singaporean filmmaker who started his career writing and shooting short films, which garnered attention in the local circuits for their quirkiness and dark subject matter. Blood Ties: The Short Film launched his filmmaking career when it was picked up by Oak3 Films and the Singapore Film Commission to be made into a full-length movie. The movie screened commercially in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. Yee Wei followed up with several features, such as Twisted, which was released in Singapore in August 2011, and That Girl in Pinafore in August 2013.

Anthony Chen was trained in film schools in Singapore and Britain. His short films have screened at numerous prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam and Busan amongst others. His second short film – Ah Ma (Grandma) – was nominated for the Palme d’Or for Short Film at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, and secured a Special Mention – the first time a Singaporean filmmaker was awarded in Cannes. Most recently, he was awarded the prestigious Caméra d’Or at Cannes for his first feature length film, Ilo Ilo, receiving an unanimous vote by the jury. The film gained widespread acclaim and recognition when it became an arthouse favourite, winning 40 awards internationally, including four awards at the 50th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.

Long Long Time Ago spans 1965 to the present, 2015, as the story follows a family from the days in a kampong to a HDB flat, paralleling Singapore’s growth.

On 9 August 1965, the protagonist of the story Tan Ya-Juan, a mistress, is driven out by her husband’s family. The heavily pregnant Ya-Juan gives birth to a pair of twins, Shun Fatt and Su-mei, on the same night she is chased out of the house. Shun Fatt is born with a hole in his heart, and the prognosis is that he won’t live past his 12th birthday. His fragile and precarious life mirrors the situation in Singapore circa 1965, as the country take its first steps as an independent nation.

With Ya-Juan’s indomitable spirit and help from her family, they overcome adversities, and witness the changes through the years.

Tan Ai Leng 陈爱玲

Under Media Development Authority’s Education Scheme (MES), Ai Leng pursued her film education at the Beijing Film Academy, graduating with an MA in Directing. She has since written, directed and produced several short films, among which Superman, My Brother was awarded the SFC Short Film Grant and official selection at the VII Open St Petersburg International Student Film Festival competition category. Her graduation film Across the Straits, supported by the Youth Film Studio, also received the SFC Short Film Grant and was the official selection for the 11th Sichuan TV Festival’s International Gold Panda Award. She is currently working on her first feature film Sinema Paradiso that, prior to production, won one of the Perfect Ten Awards at Taipei’s Golden Horse FTPP, 2011.

The director films scenes in Singapore for an imaginary time capsule that will be buried in 2015 and unearthed in 2065, 50 years later. Scenes chosen include special one-time events like the opening ceremonies of grand infrastructural projects like a new expressway and sports stadium, and nondescript everyday events like school assemblies and fire drills, intercut with the unearthing, in 2014, of an actual time capsule buried in 1990 (as part of Singapore’s 25th birthday).

How does one choose what items to keep and preserve for future generations? Does it even matter? These are some of the themes we will explore.

Tan Pin Pin Tan Pin Pin is a Singaporean documentary film director known for her award-winning portraits of Singapore and her histories. Moving House (2001), a film about the exhumation of a Singapore family’s ancestor’s graves, won several awards including the Student Academy Award. Singapore GaGa (2005) is a musical portrait of Singapore showcasing our cacophonous and multi-lingual soundscape. The film has screened to sold-out audiences in Singapore and was voted “Best Film 2006” by the Straits Times. Invisible City (2007) is a film about journalists, archaeologists and filmmakers who are fighting the atrophy of memory to unearth and preserve oral histories and photo archives for the future generations. It won awards at France’s Cinema du Reel as well as at the Taiwan International Documentary Festival.

Li Lin is one of the pioneer female filmmakers in Singapore. Her prolific filmography boasts 10 short films and two feature films as well as several telemovies and commercials. She has won several awards locally and internationally. Li Lin did her undergraduate studies at Brown University in Rhode Island and her graduate studies at NYU-Tisch Asia where she studied dramatic writing under scholarship from Singapore’s Media Development Authority. She is working on several new projects at present and teaches part-time at tertiary film schools.

Buy Me Love is a fable of innocence.

A lonely kway chap hawker who spends half of his life selling braised pig’s innards, decides to buy a mail order bride from China. Lost in a city that uses and abuses her, she seeks earnestly to find salvation. Money, or rather the lack of it, seems to spell an impending doom for her.

The couple find themselves lost in the strange world of love, a saccharine one that changes in an instantto heartaches. This is a round-trip, and who knows if they can be happy, or find love in the end.

Eysham Ali made his first short film, Rumahku, Syurgaku – My Home, My Heaven in 2008, and was awarded the Special Achievement Award in the Singapore International Film Festival. His second short film, Curian, was the official selection for the Busan International Film Festival. Eysham is also an alumni of the Asian Film Academy, and was awarded the Best Fellowship in 2011, when he wrote and produced The Keeper. His most recent work was a short film titled Curfew. Through his works, Eysham explores characters and their choices. In his writing, he uses his personal experiences and memories to create his characters – making them a projection of his own personality.

Michael Tay Hong Khoon graduated from the School of Film, Sound and Video at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2003. He majored in digital filmmaking at the School of Art, Design and Media of the Nanyang Technological University in 2009. His breakthrough work, Wet Season, won four international film festival awards and was an official selection at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, 2009. Michael’s later short film, Respirator, premiered at the 14th Pusan Film Festival in 2009 and he was also part of the AFA programme where his script An Encounter in the Woods was selected to be made under the mentorship of Malaysian filmmaker, Ho Yuhang, and the Dean, Kiyoshi Kurosawa. His award-winning short film Wet Season is also included in a DVD release “Singapore Shorts Vol. 2” by the Asian Film Archive.
