The mission of the Chorale is to provide for, encourage, and support quality choral music for
the enjoyment, cultural enrichment, and education of the community, including its youth,
and to further the talents and musical growth of the Greeley Chorale singers.
ADMINISTRATION: The Chorale is managed by its Board of Directors. The Administrative
Committee, approved by the singers, oversees all Chorale policies. Chorale singers are encouraged
to attend meetings of the Board of Directors and Administrative Committee and to make
suggestions. The roles and functions of the Board and Administrative Committee are set by the
Chorale’s bylaws. The Board of Directors may create additional committees as needed to fulfill the
duties and responsibilities delegated to it by the Board.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS: The Board of Directors consists of 9-13 elected members. In addition, the
Music Director, the Administrator, and the Marketing Director are non-voting members of the Board.
From its own membership, the Board elects its officers: President, Vice President, Secretary and
Treasurer. The Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:45pm-7:00pm at the Wells
Fargo on 59th Ave. & 10th St. in Greeley. Singers are welcome to attend.
ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE: The Administrative Committee is generally responsible for the
functioning of the musical portions of the Chorale’s activities. It is comprised of four Section
Leaders, the Director, and the Administrator who serves as the liaison between the singers and the
Board of Directors. The Administrative Committee generally meets on the first Tuesday of each
month.
AUDITIONS: Auditions for a Chorale season are held in August and January. Dates are announced in
local publications and on the Chorale website. Specific information regarding auditions is available
from the Music Director and/or Administrator.
ANNUAL DUES: Membership dues are $40.00 for returning singers,
$45.00 for new singers (to cover the cost of a music folder). Payment is
due no later than the end of the fourth rehearsal unless a hardship exists
and other payment arrangements have been made with the Section
Leader. New singers in January will pay $25.00 dues. Refunds will not be
made for leaves of absence.

REHEARSALS: Unless otherwise noted, rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesday nights in Room 63, Frasier Hall, UNC, from
7:15-9:30PM with one ten-minute break. The 2017-2018 rehearsal and concert schedule is listed on page 1 in this handbook.
ATTENDANCE: Being a member of the Greeley Chorale means making a personal commitment to the Chorale in terms
of time, learning music, and being present for rehearsals and performances. Each person contributes to the unique
sound of the Chorale and is needed at all times.
All singers are expected to attend every scheduled rehearsal during the concert season, as well as all concert performances. Regardless of whether or not you can sing, attending rehearsal means that you are paying attention to the rehearsal— not texting, reading, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, or playing games.
Attendance is tracked by the member’s Section Leader, with infractions calculated on a point system as outlined below. The Section Leader must be notified in advance if a member is to be absent. If it is necessary to leave prior to the end of rehearsal, the member must inform his or her Section Leader.
If you accumulate a total of 9 points for a concert period (10 points for the Spring concert), you will be considered on leave.
Tardy = 1 point (if you arrive after warm-up has begun, you are tardy!)
Missing ½ or more of practice = 1.5 points (break determines halfway point)
Absence = 3 points
Section leaders put singers on notice after 2 absences.
The clock in the practice room (or the Director’s clock if no room clock is available) will be official.
The retreat, scheduled 9/16/17, is part of the rehearsal schedule and due to length is valued at 4 points.
Final rehearsal is mandatory. Missing final rehearsal means you do not sing for the concert.
A member is responsible for obtaining all information (e.g. music notes) given during his/her absence, before the next rehearsal.
Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the Music Director in consultation with the Administrative Committee.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE: Requests for leave of absence should be made in writing to the Section Leader. Each case will
be reviewed individually. Requests for leave must be submitted to the Section Leader before the first rehearsal of the affected
concert period. Failure to do so may necessitate a re-audition at the discretion of the Music Director. In addition, a member
may not take more than one leave during a single concert season or two consecutive leaves (e.g., spring leave of one concert
season and fall leave of the subsequent season) without suspension of membership. Subsequent reinstatement following a
suspension of membership will necessitate a written request and a re-audition, or permission of the Music Director. Singers on
leave are welcome to attend rehearsals until two weeks before the performance.

MUSIC: Membership dues partially cover the purchase of new music. Due to the high cost of replacement, the following policy applies:
The Chorale Librarian will distribute the music; it will be brought to three rehearsals only, after which time it is the responsibility of the member to contact the Librarian for needed music.
Singers are responsible for checking out their own music from the Librarian. Only a section leader can check out music for another member. Signature is required when checking out music.
Each member is issued a number and is responsible for all music having that number.
If music has been borrowed, it should be returned in the same condition in which it was received. This includes refraining from highlighting and removing all marks from the music before it is returned.
Following each concert, the Librarian will collect all music. All music should be returned at that time. Any unreturned music will be noted and the Librarian will arrange for billing the member for missing items at the current replacement cost. In addition, a return fee of $1 per copy of music will be assessed when music is turned in late!
Contact the Librarian for replacement folders (970.352.6149; [email protected]). Cost for replacement is the singer’s responsibility.
PERFORMANCE ATTIRE: No perfumes, colognes, lotions, or scented after shaves are to be used during rehearsals or performances. Basic costume requirements are outlined here— please strictly adhere to these requirements as we seek to maintain professionalism in both sound and appearance. For more information, please contact the Costume Coordinator. Additional costume requirements at modest cost may be required during the season.
WOMEN: The required concert attire consists of the long black dress and black closed-toe shoes with black hose. The dress length will be 1” from the floor. Lingerie must be black. Jewelry is limited to a single string of white pearls that hangs above the dress neckline and white pearl stud earrings.
MEN: The required concert attire consists of a black tuxedo worn with black dress shoes, tie, cummerbund or vest as directed by the section leader, suspenders, studs (required) and cufflinks. A white “wing collar” shirt is to be worn whenever the formal concert attire is worn.
RE-AUDITION POLICY: In order to maintain the highest possible level of artistic and musical integrity of the Greeley Chorale, periodic re-auditions of current singers will be scheduled as deemed necessary by the Music Director in consultation with the Administrative Committee.
GROCERY GIFT CARD PROGRAM: The Chorale has signed up with King Soopers and Safeway for their re-loadable grocery gift card fundraising programs. Singers and board members may purchase grocery gift cards for either store and use them just like cash for their purchases. The Chorale receives a percentage back from each gift card redeemed. Singers and board members are encouraged to participate and are also encouraged (but not required) to sell additional gift cards to friends or family, should the opportunity present itself. For further details, please contact John or Karen Zack, program administrators.

The Greeley Chorale has long been an organization which
promotes and encourages familial and supportive relationships
within its membership. Part of that objective is derived from
encouraging long-term commitments from its singers, not just
one-year memberships. To foster this objective, the Chorale has
adopted the following policy with regard to the distribution of
Tour Fund during a travel year.
The three categories of funding are based on the amount allotted to traveling singers
which will be determined by the final balance of the Tour Fund divided by the total
number of singers traveling.
1) Full stipend:
a. Continuous member – returning singing members who have been in the
Chorale longer than the current year. Participation is expected in the
Chorale’s primary annual fundraiser, Pops & Pasta (including the Silent
Auction).
b. Former singing members of the Greeley Chorale who re-audition for
membership and who are accepted in August of the travel season, who
have been active singing members during either of the two previous
Chorale years. Participation is expected in the Chorale’s primary annual
fundraiser, Pops & Pasta (including the Silent Auction).
2) One-half stipend:
a. Former singing members of the Greeley Chorale who re-audition for
membership and who are accepted in August of the travel season, but who
have not been singing members during either of the last two Chorale years.
Participation is expected in the Chorale’s primary annual fundraiser, Pops &
Pasta (including the Silent Auction).
b. First-time applicants who audition for membership and are accepted in
August of the travel season. Participation is expected in the Chorale’s
primary annual fundraiser, Pops & Pasta (including the Silent Auction).
3) Twenty-five percent stipend:
a. Applicants who audition for membership in the Greeley Chorale and who
are accepted in January of the travel season. Participation is expected in
the Chorale’s primary annual fundraiser, Pops & Pasta (including the Silent
Auction).
Please note that any stipend that is paid out by the Chorale but which is not used by the
singer (e.g., due to unforeseen circumstances) will need to be paid back to the Chorale
in full.

DESCRIPTION: Pops and Pasta is a cabaret-type show that is a fund raiser for the Tour Fund. The show is accompanied by a catered Italian dinner, served by Chorale singers and board members, family, and friends. This show is typically the last Saturday in February with show times at 1:00 and 6:00 and mandatory final rehearsal the Friday before the show. It takes everyone’s involvement for this to be a success so participation is strongly encouraged, (and it's fun!).
Here is what involvement looks like:
Chorale singers will need to memorize 3 or 4 songs; rehearsals begin in January.
The bulk of the show consists of about a dozen acts chosen by audition in January; the acts are performed by Chorale singers, solo or group.
More than 50% of an “act” must be current Chorale singers, and acts should not exceed 3-4 minutes in length. Performances from all genres— vocal, instrumental, dance, and dialogue— are welcome, as are costumes and props.
Singers are encouraged to inform the Audition Coordinator of selection choices to ensure a variety of acts, avoid duplicate selections, and allow for adequate audition preparation.
Singers and board members (and friends and family) decorate and prepare the hall, serve the food to our guests, and clean up after them when they leave, after both shows!
There is also a silent auction as part of the event. Chorale singers and board members are encouraged to solicit and/or contribute items. We raise about half of our total profit from the auction proceeds.
Singers are also encouraged to participate in the planning committee and direct any specific questions or concerns to committee chairs.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE TOUR FUND
Singer’s Handbook Page 7
For the Greeley Chorale to be really successful and visible in Northern Colorado we
need to sing well, with emotion, expression and passion. But we also can get
involved in lots of different, fun, challenging ways outside of Wednesday evening
rehearsals. We really all must contribute to the success of the Chorale by sharing in
the “work” that makes us run smoothly. In fact, there is a long history of
involvement in Chorale activities on the part of the singers, which we want to
perpetuate and even enhance. Once again, we urge you to consider committing to
at least THREE of the suggestions listed below in order to help the entire Chorale…
You will enjoy a deeper involvement and commitment!
Sell five tickets for each concert. (Everyone needs to do
this!)
Recruit new singing members, especially men, to audition for Chorale.
Work and sing at Pops & Pasta in February.
Gather up and / or contribute a minimum of two items to the Pops & Pasta Silent
Auction… in February.
Volunteer for a committee such as the Tour Committee, the Pops & Pasta
Committee, and others as they are formed.
Become a mentor to a new Chorale member… contact Barb Casey if you’d like
to do this.
Become a mover and a shaker and volunteer to move chairs (see schedule on
the bottom of page 8)… this is needed at rehearsal, and sometimes at
performances and at our fall retreat.
Buy your groceries using Chorale grocery certificates… this is no extra cost to
you… but brings money into us.
Sign up to sing for the occasional event such as the Fourth of July Rodeo in July
or various Christmas “to-dos” in December.
Participate in the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra’s Poinsettia Pops concert on
December 2nd — we get a $1500 honorarium for this event!
Participate at least once a month in the post-Chorale rehearsal get-togethers…
lots of folks come for half an hour for a lemonade… others longer for a
scotch… it is a fun way to get to know folks outside of your particular section.

Top Twelve Tips for a Successful Singing Season
1) READ THE HANDBOOK! And when you have done so, read it one more time.
2) Print the handbook and keep a copy in your folder. Before you ask a question
about dates or times or costumes, check the handbook. You just might find the
answer.
3) After you’ve read the handbook, get out your calendar (smartphone, day timer,
iPad, etc.) and get all of the important concert, final rehearsal, and regular
rehearsal dates and locations on your calendar (include the weeks we DON’T
rehearse).
4) Don’t text… tweet, blog, email, post, or otherwise engage in social media on
your smart phone, tablet, or iPad while at rehearsal. And leave your arts and
crafts at home… knitting, crocheting, and cross stitching are just fine before
rehearsal and during break, but please put these things away when it is time to
sing. You’ve shown up to rehearsal to rehearse. Please be really, truly,
completely present.
5) Check your email regularly. Your Administrator and / or Section Leader will use
this medium to communicate with you. Use our Google Groups email addresses to
communicate important information:
Singers ONLY: [email protected]
Singers, Board & Librarian: [email protected]
6) Check out the Chorale’s website and share it with friends and family via email or
Facebook—www.greeleychorale.org.
7) Keep the Librarian happy… get your music turned in immediately following
concerts and make sure there aren’t unnecessary notes (grocery lists, to-do lists,
reminders, etc.) in your music when you turn it in. And if the music has been
borrowed, please make sure it has been thoroughly erased.
8) Get to know your fellow singers and participate in a post-rehearsal or post-concert
social gathering. Some of us go out almost every week following rehearsal— the
more the merrier!
9) Get your friends and family to audition for this Amazing group!
10) Be kind… and say “thank you”… to your fellow singers, your section leaders, your
board members, and the Chorale staff. Everyone works hard to help this
organization be successful.
11) Sell tickets! It is so much more fun to sing to a packed venue!
12) Have fun!
