MATT VERNON

HE WILL PRINT AND MhIL

Nothing so constant as change in THE VERNON FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA! All for best of course!! Now comes our Cousin Matt Vernon, Publisher of THE EUNICE (La.) NEWS who has consented to handle the job of printing and mailing VERNON VIGNETTES effective with the:#'8 (Sept. 1971) issue. We say we envy the first Member to receive a copy of this improved, at least in appearance, issue of VV. Most likely we won't be first since Matt will mail directly. With eccentricities of Third Class mail may be Cousin Ferg in New Zealand! We quite agreeable however forego firstsight pleasure to escape hand collating, etc. which Matt will now do on his fine automatic equipment. "New computer equipment for setting type'~ etc. Matt says it will be largely a "Labor of love" and we believe him. <'Sall any of us get, Matt!)

Matt Vernon will be backed by attractive wife Miss Sarah (Sorry, no picture!) and an efficient staff led by an "especially reliable" Foreman whose name we do not have. We just know we will with Matt's printing have a much more readable and attractive Quarterly. It might even be better written and edited since being relieved of the "mechanical phases" your Editors will have more time to give to editing work. Hope so! This was a change we requested and President Bill arranged.

Now if you Cousins don't believe that doing the whole job, even with the help of good wife and Co-Editor, Essye Lea, wasn't "wearing" we invite you to compare picture above, right, with that of VV issue two years ago; first issue, Dec. 1969.

..

ESSYE LEA AND RICHARD COLQUETTE

THEY WILL WRITE AND EDIT

Yes, Essye Lea and Dick will continue this more pleasurable phase of Vernon Vignettes production. We will try to keep everyone happy, knowing that is impossible, but trying. Sometime we get encouragement as; "My family and I enjoy Vernon Vignettes, it's history, pictures, humor, news-the whole bit. It evidences condiserable effort on your part.. .. My family and I extend our gratitude and heartfelt thanks." Thanks, Cousin Chester A. Vernon! ! Another day-another person- "The last one not so up and coming." Both will find you, Cousin Matt! I'll help by giving your address-- Mr. Matt Vernon, Publisher, The Eunice News, Box 989, Eunice, La. 70535. But Matt says, "After all these years in my business a buzz-saw does not even raise a blister." Anyway Matt we thank you for giving us a lift in this VV matter and we feel that all VF AA members join in calling you "blessed."

Indirectly we learn that Cousin Matt is a leading spirit in the erection of a fine new library in his city. He keeps quite active in area affairs and now he says, "I am leaving on the 10th for England, and will photograph Haddon Hall and the castle in Vernon, France, in black and color, stills and movies. Back on 19th." Don't know how all this activity will affect mailing of VV#8 but Matt we ask penance in the form of a fine story with pictures of your trip.

Wife and CoEd pictured above says she will tillce her pay in contributions of information of her f arnily lines Johnson (Mississippi), Haden (N. Car.), DeWitt (S. Car.), Talbert (Mississippi). Any ideas, anyone??

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT; WILLIAM A. VERNON, JR.

Dear Cousins:

The Utah Statewide VERNON REUNION on August 14-15 marked the Second Anniversary of THE VERNON FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. Such reunions are highlights in our activity and achievement. Others were held in Dallas, Texas <May 29th.>. Phoenix, Arizona (July 3rd and 4th), and Friendship, Tenn. (The West Tenn. Vernon Reunion. second Sunday in July annually).

Jamie Collins Powers informs us that a Vernor. Reunion will be held in Charlottsville, Va., in 1972. VF AA expects to get behind this one.

I have also been extremely pleased with the genealogical accomplishments of our Board of Compilers. This fourteen member board directed by Mary K. Timothy represents perhaps the finest work force in any family association in America. It is a unique group, and I know of no group tha t has compiled so much genealogical data in such a short period of time. Unfortunately one of our finest compilers, V. Earline Robinson of Daly City, California, passed-on in May. We will miss her tremendously. Another fine Member , Mrs. Alton E . Wease, of Natchez, Miss., lost her life in an automobile crash in July ; on her way to attend the West Tenn. Vernon Reunion. We are deeply hurt by this great tragedy.

Renewals during the first part of 1971 were disappointing. We had 306 paid Members by Dec. 31st. <representing approximately 1500 actual members.) At this writing our 1971 paid membership stands at 263. We must do better in order to survive.

We arranged in July for Matt Vernon, Publisher of Eunice, La., to print and mail our Quarterly, Vernon Vignettes. However, R. T. Colquette will continue as Editor.

Clinton D. Vernon of Salt Lake City, has taken over the important position of Executive Secy.-Treasurer of VF AA. I feel that we have one of the finest Vernons in the country now in this position. I have complete confidence in him. His nephew, Robert G. Vernon, was compelled to resign from this positiQn due to prior committments to his Church. He did a fine job during his one-and-one-half years tenure.

Condolences are in order for our great veteran searcher and compiler, Evalina Nidever, of Bakersfield, Calif. upon the death in May of her husband, Vernon Nidever, descendant of Nehemiah and Mary Charity (King) Vernon (1760-1815) of Tenn. and Abbeville, Co., S. C. Nehemiah was the son of James and Eleanor Vernon (Latter son of Thomas of Cub Creek) Evalina also lost her last two remaining

sisters recently. Although her work on the Board of Compilers has been taken over by Lloyd Apperson of Roseda, Calif., Eva, now " past 80", is busy at work on her saga, "Footprints In The Sands of Time." I am looking forward to purchasing a copy.

Myrtle and I had a wonderful auto tour of the U. S. and Mexico this summer. Most of all we enjoyed " dropping in" on many of the "working" Members of VFAA: Greta V. Ramsay of Clearwater, Florida; Tyrus C. Vernon of Anniston, Ala.; Richard T. Colquette (and Essye Lea) of Shreveport, La.; Matt and Sarah Vernon of Eunice, La.; Mary K. Timothy <and Weston) of Kaysville, Utah; Clinton D. and E velyn Vernon of Salt Lake City; Richard Minetree, Jr. of Popular Bluff, Mo. and Rev. Dr. Walter N. Vernon, Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., Fir.st Vice President of VFAA.

We also visited the fine Eastern Utah home of Presley Timothy and of Tilentha (Timothy) Rasmussen of Roosevelt, Utah. (Tilenthia raises fine horses. One jumper in National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden last year); " Uncle Louie" Timothy of Maeser, Utah (successful in business and a masterful poet a t age 79; and Stella (Mrs. Leslie Thackery) of Vernal, Utah.

In Placerville, Calif. we visited my nephew, the Boy Scout Director in Northern Calif. , Robert L. Shumate, his wife Linda, and baby Matt. Just transferred from Honolula, Hawaii, they are enjoying a charming new home just outside of Placerville. We also visited Bob's parents in Norfolk, Va., Mr. and Mrs. Otis (Sister Lorene) Shumate; Jessie (Vernon) Cabiness (Mrs. Morton) of Roanoke, Va.; Alma (Vernon) Qualls (Mrs. W. W.) of Greensboro, N. C.; Joy (Vernon) Knight (Mrs. Orien); and Mozelle (Parker) Vernon (Mrs. Homer J .) of Eden, N. C. These are my sisters and VFAA Members.

We were also happy to see Members Aunt Mollie <Vernon) Boyles and daughter-member Geneva (Boyles) Sharp (Mrs. L. M.) of Reidsville, N. C. We then visited Member Aunt Hannah (Vernon) Patterson of Eden, N. C. who has been hospitalized in Greensboro, N. C. for past three months with a hip condition. Mollie and Hannah, as well as Dollie, are sisters of my father Abdon Vernon (1879-1958) of Eden, N. C.

Myrtle and I are particularly happy to learn that our son William Abdon Vernon III, successfully completed his four year hitch in the Navy effective August 20th. Just returning from a two and one half months tour at sea aboard the atomic sub. , U. S. S. James Madison, he will now be able to spend more time at home in Charleston, S. C. with his wife Colette and son Scott William Vernon age 18 months. (Another due first week of October.)

In closing may I say that I am especially pleased with your election of Rev. Dr. Walter N. Vernon Jr. as our First Vice-President. This is an outstandmg choice of leadership. He is a talented administrator and is very interested in the continued success of VFAA. I trust that you will exercise the same fine judgement of our Second Vice-President. After all I do. not in~ to remain President indefinitely. B~t Wishes, Smcerely, Cousin Bill. (William A. Vernon Jr.) . '

"CALLING ALL VERNONS!" (Report of Salt Lake City Vernon Reunion by Pres. W. A. Vernon.)

With this cry Clinton D. Vernon of Salt Lake City opened the Utah State-wide Vernon Reunion at 10:30 A. M. August 14th, in the shelter area of Harmony Park in beautiful Salt Lake City. Although the temperature reached 103 degrees by midday the hundred or so Vernon and connected cousins seated at the adequately spaced tables under the huge shelter remained quite comfortable throughout the program. Clinton, a former Attorney General of Utah was M. C. for the day.

The reunion was held under the auspices of The Vernon Family Association of America. Three principal family groups were represented: the Mormon descendants of William and Cynthia Vernon who came to Utah in 1890 from Kentucky · the descendants of Francis Vernon of England who ~ame to Utah in 1868 (the Coalville Vernons) and the des.cendants of Walter E. Vernon, grandson of John D. and Aurora (Medaris) Vernon, pioneers of Kansas and the North-west.

Members of VF AA made up the Planning Committee as follows: Nila Brunk of Salt Lake City; Clinton D. Vernon of same; Dr. Leo P . Vernon of Provo, Utah; Robert G. Vernon of SLC: Roseltha Vernon of Orem Utah; Mary K. Timothy of Kaysville, Utah. '

Singing set the happy mood of those in attendance for the morning program, led by the talented Dr. Glenn Vernon, ably assisted by his brother, Dr. Leo Vernon. This was followed by songs by Glenn's son with his trusty guitar; a piano duet by beautiful V~rnon girls;. singing by "The Wesley Timothy Gang", featurmg a group of the 26 grandchildren of Weston and Mary Timothy; a great song by Robert G. Vernon and a report by William A. Vernon, Jr., Pres. of VFAA.

During the morning's proceedings above planning Committee was made permanent with Dr. Leo Vernon as Chairman and with the addition of Edna V. Judd of Coalville, Utah.

..

MR. & MRS. LESLIE PARKER

She won the cheese server . Accou~t travelled from Florida and Is oldest living child of John Elmer E. Vernon.

Large charts were made available for "signing in" the descendants of each of the children of Wm. and Cynthia Vernon, mostly from SLC, Roosevelt, Vernal, Provo and Orem. Approximately one-half of those present were in this category. Another "sign in" chart was prepared for "Other Vernons" and outof-staters. These were mostly the descendants of WalterE. Vernon as follows: Nila (Mrs. Dale) Brunk and children, SLC. Jane (Mrs. Cecil) Drotts Board of Compilers, Richland, Washington; Mary H. <Mrs. Robert) Bethell, St. Francis, Kansas · Aleen Van Vleet, Oberlin, Kan.; Fausta (Mrs. Vyrl) Nicodemus, St. Francis, Kansas· E. D. C. VERNON COUSIN WANTS TO HELP.

Romona Vernon (Mrs. Robert D.) of 3222 Graham Road, Falls Church, Va. 22042, realizing that she has access to our great National Archieves just across the Potomac in D. C. offers to do some Vernon family research there, in reasonable amount. Let's keep her busy! Thanks Cousin Ramona.

'With their children the Walter E. Vernon family were quite a large group; mostly Members of VF AA. Fausta is the leader of these Vernons although Nila gave their report.

The Coalville Vernons were represented by Edna Vernon Judd and her fine brother R. Lynn Vernon and wife, Annabelle, as well as Douglas Arland and Karien Vernon (with six young children). They live in SLC.

Out-of-staters include the following:

Janie Collins Powers of Richmond, Va. ; Vernon Searcher and guests of Weston and Mary Timothy, descendant of Nehemiah and Susannah Smith Vernon of Surrey Co. , N. C. (Nehemiah first married in 1825.) Edward and Virginia Vernon of La Grand, Oregon. Ed. descends from Miles Standish Vernon, <Old Surrey Co., N. C. in 1786), son of Thomas Gaines and Nancy (Hicks) Vernon. George Walter and Gay Vernon of Bakersfield, Cal. George descend$ from Nehemiah David Vernon (b. 1809) of N. C. and Bibb, Ala. William A. Vernon Jr. and Myrtle Vernon of Fresh Meadows, N. Y. Bill, Pres. t:>f VFAA, is descendant of John Vernon of Stokes C., N. C., B. 1791, son of Capt. James Lewis and Anne (Timothy) Vernon who founded Vernon, Indiana in 1817. .. ·

The morning program was closed by presentation of prizes as follows:

A catering wagon was available at the park for light lunches, drinks, etc. The descendants of William and Cynthia enjoyed a fine spread of food on the tables of the large shelt~r meeting place. This lasted until about 5:00 P. M. At 7:00 P. M. the descendants of Walter E. Vernon gave a report to this group, some of which had not attended the morning program.

A week-end tour and entertainment schedule was planned for the Walter E. Vernon descendants and guests with headquarters at "Motel 6" managed by Dale and Nila (Vernon) Brunk. These activities included a buffet luncheon at the beautiful new home of Clinton D. and Evelyn (Iverson) Vernon of SLC. George W. and Gay Vernon and William A. and Myrtle Vernon attended this luncheon on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 15th; The descendants of Walter E. Vernon (three sons, four daughters, 11 grandchildren and "spouses" plus one sister and two nieces) held their final meeting at the Rodeway Inn Dining Room, beginning 7:30 P. M. August 15th and lasting .~til midnight.

JANE DROTTS SCOOPS PREXY. BILL VERNON (SEE ABOVE, PRIOR AND NEXT PAGES)

Just this minute as the last page of VV-8 was being typed the Postman rang. He don't have to ring twice, these days. Always alert for Vernon news! Guess what? The answer to your Editor's prayer! Nice letter from aleFt Jane Drotts enclosing 3 pictures of the Sl!.C Vernon Reunion. Must have been what we had slowed down for! We will mail all three along to Matt Vernon with suggestion he use as many as are sufficiently contrasting, using data on reverse for "cut lines". Thanks for them and also the older 1876 pictures of Wilbern and Sarah Henderson Vernon and family of nine. Will save it for future VV.

JOHN F. VERNON FINDS "OLD GR.OG." ~ note .from this Cousin John dated May 30 says,

Have Just returned from a trip ,around the world. Had a wonderful time. While in London went thru Westminister Abbey and found tomb of Admiral Vernon-- "OLD GROG." (Glad to know he is still there awaiting our VFAA visit.)

This Cousin (J oho F. , not the Admiral!) gets around! May of last year he advised had just returned from "a five week trip about the country, visiting relatives and friends of both myself and my wife." John F . retired from the US Navy in 1917 and ·living in Paradise, California now works in Chico, at Civil Engineering. His wife is Gladys Loree (Kennedy). They have two daughters ; one safely married lives in Northern California the other after a teaching stint started out to see the world from a Stewardess seat on Delta. Her home base is Dallas.

Cousin John's father was John Wavely Vernon b. Hodgenville, Ky., 1875; married Olivia Eliz. Jacobs in Columbus, Ohio in 1906?; d. Paradise 1958. John's (248) grandfather was James Felix (Alexander) Vernon; b. Lynchburg, Va., 1839 ? ; m. La Rue County, Ky. near Hodgenville, 1865? ; d. ditto, 1900. Grandmother was Mary Hanna Durbin. Thanks Cousin John for keeping us informed about your interesting trips. Suggest if you don't have ancestry ~yond your grandfather that you ask Mary K. Timothy for some Compiler assistance.

Lined up according to age: eldest on right.

COMPILER KATHERINE REYNOLDS STILL ACTIVE

Our Compiler-Searcher Katherine Reynolds, per our last from her in May, is still active in behalf of Vernon genealogy and especially of those Members of VFAA "assigned" to her. She reports progress on these. All this despite the fact that, "These have been sad times for me," - because "My sister's husband died last July and she had a brain hemmorage last Nov. 22 and has had round-the-clock nurses ever since ..... We are the last and youngest of our Veuion family." Cousin Katherine gives several pages of Vernon data and adds, "In my research, I have found that many Vernons came to America after the arrival of the three Quaker brothers but were probably connected with them back several generations in England" . OK Cousin Katherine we are willing for all Vernons to be Quaker connected. Could do worse! Possibly the English data which VV starts this issue may help us to join us in England. (We need an Engl~sh Vernon specialist in our group. Any takers?") Thanks again Cousin Katherine for your VFAA loyalty. We do hope that something has happened to brighten your "sad times!"

A TRUE VERNON FAMILY "BABY" MEMBER AND MASCOT. Three ·year old Anne Elizabeth Gwin might not appreciate being ~lled VF AA "baby" or even our " mascot", but she is our youngest paid Member. And we do need something to bring us "luck" as we know she brings "happiness" to her grandparents Dr. Robert P . and Ouida Wheeler Logan of Fayetteville,

1Ark. They thoughtfully sent in her membership,

suggesting no copy of VV was required but Anne will receive her copy care of grandfather. He, we hope, will keep it for her until she is old enough to better 1ppreciate her Vernon-Logan ancestry. (Dr. Logan, thanks! We note the Logans at Cub Creek and belie.ve them to be of your line. If correct VV would greatly lppreciate a "by-line" story from you about the Logans of Cub Creek and since.

CALL ON US FOR A "FREE AD"

We offer "free ads" in VV. Make the most of it! We offer such service to all VF AA members reference books or other items related to Vernons or other genealogy. Try us! As proof we acknowledge receipt from Mrs. H. Dean Haden, VF AA Member 292, Box 763, Bridgeport, Nebraska, of 11h inch thick compilation of records of her ancestors, mostly Vernons, but well over 500 different surnames. It sells for $10.00. Earliest Vernon shown is James Vernon who with wife Hester was the English parents of the three Vernon Quaker brothers who received land from William Penn; Robert, Randall and Thomas as often mentioned in earlier VV. About 300 VERNONS named: a sampling of some of the oldest: - Content, Amos, Robert, Soloman, Thiodate, James, Asa, Eli, Elijah, Elisha, Elizabeth, Jena, Jesse, Joseph, Mary Ann, Rachel, Rebecca, Rhoda, Ruth Anna, Sarah, William, Zilpah, Jane, and Rachel, All neatly and logically arranged. Must see to appreciate fully. Thanks Haden Cousin. Have not yet learned how much Essye Lea and your Editor are related thru the Vernon-Haden marriage but 'tis too late to worry since we celebrate our 50th Christmas Day 1972.

VERNONS LEADERS!

Says a Member responding to "Typical Data" query; "No matter what his occupation a Vernon was always a leader. He is clear-headed, far-sighted and honest. He is very independent and always a romantic." Can you beat that? If not 100 percent accurate, is at least a great goal. Don't let the exception be you! !

'Members of THE VERNON FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA owe much to GRETA VERNON <DA VIS) RAMSAY, veteran VERNON Researcher. This is an attempt to repay some of that debt or at least let her know NOW that we are conscious of an obligation and that we are grateful to her.

Cousin Greta is 85 years young. Our VF AA President, William A. Vernon, Jr., and wife Myrtle spent an all-too-short day with your Editors Richard and Essye Lea in Shreveport last July on their greatcircle-route to Salt Lake City Reunion via Mexico and California. They came directly from a visit with Greta in her Gulf-side city of Clearwater, Florida. About all Cousin Bill could talk about was "Greta Ramsay! Greta Ramsay! ! " Her sprightliness of soul, body and mind;-"and at 86" ! ! Her great knowledge of VERNON genealogy! And on and on!! Wife Myrtle nodded assent! You know she rarely attempts to speak when Bill is "turned on" about genealogy. And when isn't he?

Well we already knew all this. 'Twas apparent from her letters, her picture and her accomplishments. It was good however to have this confirmed by an expert observer. Picture? See her latest here! Accomplishments? Witness the great manuscript of over one thousand pages of VERNON family data compiled by her. If final proof of her great spirit and devotion to VERNON family history is needed we cite the fact that Greta Ramsay m~de available to our VERNON ASSOCIA'i'ION for a· quite nominal sum, her 40 years of VERNON research on microfilm as compared to a much greater sum which she could have properly demanded. This data is now at work for the benefit of all VFAA Members. We express· sincere thanks to you Cousin Greta.

But don't get the impression that this octogenarian has "signed off." Far from it! She has furnished more queries and answers to VV than any other person. This she continues and did she "Get us told" for omitting queries from VV ~ 7 ! ! "I'm still collecting VERNONS and probably shall as long as I am able." Of course you will Cousin Greta and for selfish as well as friendly urgings we hope that you will be "able" for many additional years. THANKS AGAIN!!

A previous Vignettes carried a picture and biog. info. on Cousin Greta. This issue we present a newer and closer view, obtained after urging, and we repeat that part of her personal history necessary to tie her into the tale which we will relate about her interesting ancestors including the grandparents pictured on our cover.

GRETA VERNON (DAVIS) RAMSAY.

She carries her VERNON line back with certainty for eight generations to James Vernon who married Hester in England. Presumably they both were born and died there. They must have been of the dissenting religious group called Quakers. This in the late 17th Century when it took real courage to be a Quaker!

Our VFAA Vice President Dr. Walter N. Vernon in a previous VV gave us a good story about three Quaker Vernon brothers who came to Pennsylvania with the great Quaker William Penn. They were Randal, Robert and Thomas sons of James and Hester mentioned above. Reference to a map, (SEE BACK COVER), furnished to VV by Miss Katherine, and again byNormanD. Vernon, captioned "Patents and Grants.... . From William Penn in NetherProvidence, Delaware County, Penn.'' shows clearly the land owned by Robert, Randal and Thomas in that order north to south between the Ridley Creek on the west and "Providence Great Road Laid Out in 1682." They seem to have had initially 330, 298 and 250 acres of land, respectively .

Page 13: Single Copies: 'l VERNON VIGNETTESfreepages.rootsweb.com/~quakervernons/genealogy...France, in black and color, stills and movies. Back on 19th." Don't know how all this activity will

The earliest dates on the map are the 1681 "L and R" dates and of these the ones on Vernon property ~e some weeks to months earlier than other close areas. <Hope some reader will advise exactly what "L and R" means ; meantime we presume them to be dates of initial contracts made in England prior departure for America.) The Vernon dates are in March 1681 whereas the big deal with William Penn was not signed by the English King until the 14th of that same month. All this by way of saying that the Vernon brothers were right 1'early birds" in this matter.

Back to Greta's " line." It is to brother Randal that she connects. He is her immigrant ancestor who in 1670 had, in England, married Sarah Bradshaw when he was age 30. A son Jacob Vernon was born to Randal and Sarah in England about 1678. Jacob must have been about three to six years old when he first saw Penn's Woods. Whenaboutage23 Jacob found in Chester County, Penn. an English girl by name Ann Y earsly. She was most likely an Quaker also since he surely sought and obtained permission from the Quaker Meeting before he married her as he did in 1701.

As of Jan 10, 1709 a Jacob Vernon is shown on our above referred to map as the owner of the 330 acres originally owned by Robert Vernon. Had Greta's Jacob come into possession of his uncle's land? Apparently the Chester countryside was good for Randal. He died therein 1724 at age 84.

A son J oseph was born to Jacob and Ann in 1733. He married Sarah Bennett sometime prior to April 1752. Referring to map we find a Joseph Vernon as owner of the same 298 acres which Randal Vernon first owned. No date is shown but it seems reasonable to assume that this Joseph was the son of Randal. If so George Woodward Vernon, son of Joseph and Sarah must have in 1752 first seen the light of day on Randal's acres.

This George W. was the great great grandfather of Greta Ramsay; her "Revolutionary" ancester. We suspect that she has especial regard for him because being in his late teens at the time of our American Revolution he obliged her by entering that war on the American side. Thus he provided Greta with basis for entering DAR, but for his trouble got read out of the Quaker church as a non-pacifist. He might have saved that trouble because ten other similiarly accommodated her. Yes, eleven ancestors who fought for our liberty from English tyrannv. But Greta has the "DAR bar " for George Woodward only. "Too expensive these days. Anyway who wants to live behind bars?"

His ba ttling activities may have delayed the marriage of George W. for it was about 8 years after Yorktown when he wed Susanna Ashbridge in 1789. Maybe he just wanted to marry in Delaware County for we find their marriage recorded there. (Delaware CountY was created from the south-east corner of Chester in 1789. Its county seat is Media, eight miles west of Philadelphia "founded by t.he

,

'Friends in 1682." Reference to our map shows Media at the upper right corner of Robert Vernon's 330 acres and Providence Friends Meeting House near by. Interestingly it shows James Ewing as the owner of 300 of Robert's acres in rrn with the upper corner 30 under the name Isaac Minshall. Were these two son's-in-law of some of these early Vernons? Media was founded on Vernon land apparently about the same year that the Vemons moved in.

Apparently George Woodward and Susanna lived out their lives in Delaware County, however their son Rufus is recorded as born in Chester eight years after Delaware was formed. Maybe the stork caught her visiting west of the county line! In any event George W. died in Delaware County in 1828 as did his wife six years earlier. We know little of Rufus except that he married Jane Jones in 1819 and died in 1882; the first in Chester and the latter in Delaware. Jane had preceeded him by thirty years!

The child of George and Susanna of interest to us as the grandfather of Cousin Greta was christened David Ashbridge. He was born in 1831 in Chester Co. married Elizabeth Margaret Dennison Cooper in 1851 in "Pennsylvania" and died in Delaware Co. in 1888. Eliz. Margaret was born same year as David but in Cadiz, Ohio. She died in Del. C. in 1865. Eliz. and David packed a lot of living in their short 14 years of life together. Altho he died when Greta was only age three she writes as if she knew him; and Eli7.abeth.

Of Grandfather David Vernon Cousin Greta says, "He looked every inch a real French Vernon." This was conlirmed some years ago by all-French friends. The husband on seeing David's photo said, "He looks like me." His wife in his absence had said, "He looks like my husband! " Greta wants us to know that "our French blood is still strong;-with an American accent! "

"VEE EL ANCESTRAL STUDIES, P . 0 . Box 'J'CT, Nashville, Tenn. 372J9"

That's the way Cousin T. Vance Little headed a sheet which listed four of his genealogical related publications. " Vee" is V and "EL" is L ! Get it? Clever, yes!! But so is this Atty. Cousin. The four: (1) HUNT FAMILY OF TENN. Descended from Ralph Hunt of Long Island, N. Y. (1652) 61 pages indexed - $5.00 (2) WILLIAMSON 101 Tombstone inscriptions, 101 ·cemeteries Williamson County, Tenn. with related other vital data. Many Vemons and kin. $12.00 (3) GRANVILLE COUNTY (N. C.) POTPOURRI. Over 1400 individuals alphabetically listed. Wills, etc. $10.00. (4) PERSON COUNTY (N. C.) PATCHWORK. Wills, etc. $10.00. We own two of these and have found them " well done."

'This David A. Vernon became a "Doctor." He also served in the Civil War. Many years he was the Editor and Publisher of a newspaper in Del. County, Penn. His wife boosted circulation by writing a serial story about noted outlaw James Fitzpatrick.

This wife, Eliz. Margaret Dennison Cooper, was not only a writer but a "Lady Drillmaster" as well. She became so naturally. Her great grandfather, Samuel Cooper, was "Sword Drill and Riding Master" under famous Light Horse Harry Lee (of Revolution), her grandfather was James Cooper, Colonial and Rev. soldier. her father John Wilkins Cooper was in the Mexican War. She also had two brothers in the Civil War. Father John Wilkins had taught military drill to his young sons. Sister Elizabeth had tagged along and learned the manly art of legal killing so well that in the early years of the Civil War when the " boys" of Media, Pa. were looking unsuccessfully for a "drill master" Eliz. volunteered saying to her husband, "Tell them to come out here and they can drill on our lawn and I will teach them what they must know in order to become efficient soldiers."

Let Greta writes; "Elizabeth Margaret Vernon also made the flag that the Media Company carried into battle. <She owned the only sewing machine in the town.) When the boys returned from the war she was not there to greet them. She had died May 1865, aged 33 years. However, her patriotic spirit still lives in her grandson and great grandsons. In WW I, served John Ashbridge Vernon, Vernon Chalfant and J . Roger Chalfant. In WW II Major Winfred DeWitt Vosbury. Latter who died in 1955 had helped to build the Akan Highway. " Your Editor hopes and feels that i( Greta's Quaker ancestors have seen so many of their descendants employ arms in defense of freedom they will forgive in the realization that to save our Christian religion we must of ten fight for it.

Despite their short span of marriage Elizabeth and Dr. David produced seven children. Only three eldest "lived to grow up." <Dr. David married again and had nine in his second brood.) His daughter, Grace Vernon, half-sister to <Greta's mother), was the mother of the Ferg brothers Penrose and Dick. <VF AA Members 244 and 272). One of the children of "the drill-master" and her Dr .. David was Henrietta Clarissa born in the old home Penn. County, Uefaware in 1852, thus age nine when her mother drilled the boys. She probably carried a wooden gun and would have vivid memory to pass along to Greta. Henrietta married.William Vogdes Davis, Del. Co., in 1881, seven years after her father died. He was age 26 at the time.

We do not find the death date of Greta's father but believe that Greta's mother who died in Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1944 at age 92 outlived her husband for some years; one of the few wives in her line to do this.

PAGE 14

Greta had good opportunity to work with her mother on genealogy and made the most of it with the results we have mentioned.

We remind you that Cousin Greta married Fred Albert Ramsay in 1916 and NOT in Chester or Delaware. She had really gotten away from the ancestral acres. The event occurred in Searsmont, Waldox County, MAINE. Greta was educated in county schools, high school of Media and Normal School of West Chester. She sought difficult teaching assignments; delinquent boys and blind children. Greta's husband died in 1931. She returned to make her home in New'Jersey with mother and sister and here the "Gen bug" bit. From 1947 until 1955 Greta was Supt. of Mercer Memorial House. Then she moved to Florida and really got busy on genealogy, accomplishing most of her great work thru correspondence.

Two other first cousins "of both the Fergs and me", says Greta are our Members 222 and 221, Aubrey Vernon and his sister Frances. " All very fine people ... happy they my relatives ... this something can't always say about our "kin" ... VERNONS ex-cepted we all know ... TO BE A VERNON IN AN HONOR ... Enjoy the letters I get. As we say good-by to Cousin Greta may we resolve to live up to this high standard she has set.

WE HAVE A NEW EXEC.-SECY.-TREAS.

"Letter From The President" printed in this issue carries much of interest and importance to our VERNON organization. It should be read carefully. One item in it is of especial importance. Prexy announces the appointment of a new EXECUTIVE SECRETARY-TREASURER who will hold our "money-Pag" as soon as Pres. Bill can clear it to him. VFAA is quite fortunate to secure the service of such a capable man in this position of great importance to us. Clinton D. Vernon of Salt Lake City was Secy. to the Senior Senator from Utah, in Washington, for 13 years. He is a past Atty. General of Utah.

EFFECTIVE AT ONCE ALL CHECKS FOR MEMBERSHIP IN VF AA NEW OR RENEW AL OR FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE SHOULD J3E SENT TO: MR. CLINTON D. VERNON, 1044 OAKHILL DRIVE; SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 84108. CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE TO THE VERNON FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA.

LLOYD R. APPERSON

OUR NEWEST COMPILER.

LLOYD R. APPERSON The picture of this new Member of VF AA Board of Compilers indicates him to be a quite interesting man and his letter before us confirms. We quote, "Motion picture industry keeps me busy steady by jerks and since we have 'off' periOO,S once in a whiJe it gives me a chance to attend the libraries on the best days." "I have been at CBS Studio Center on the Doris Day Show for the last two seasons and will be with her again this season.
