Prof. Jun Xia is the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Chair
Professor & Director, The Research Institute for Water Security (RIWS), Wuhan
University, also Director, Center for Water Resources Research, CAS. He was
severed as the President of International Water Resources Association (IWRA,
2009‐2012), Vice President of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS, 2004‐
2007). He was appointed as Honorary Vice‐President of IAHS, and Chair of the Working Group on
Representation of Developing Countries (WGRDC) for IAHS, 2015‐2019. He was awarded “2014’s
International Hydrological Prize ‐Volker Medal”, given by IAHS, UNESCO and WMO on April 24, 2014
and awarded 2017 State Natural Science Award in China.
Formation Mechanism and Control Strategies of Haze in China
Hong He
Center of Excellence in Regional Atmospheric Environment, CAS
Hong He is the Chief Scientist of the CERAE, Deputy Director of the Institute of
Urban Environment (IUE), and Deputy Director of the Research Center for Eco‐
Environmental Sciences (RCEES), CAS. Professor He received his doctorate in
chemistry (Ph.D) at the University of Tokyo in 1994. He studied and worked in
Japan, the United States, and Canada for 11 years, and thereafter joined RCEES
through the “Hundred Talents Program” of the CAS in 2001. His work has
focused primarily on fundamental and applied research in environmental catalysis and heterogeneous
atmospheric chemistry, with a series of achievements in areas of diesel emission control technologies,
catalytic indoor air purification, and haze formation mechanisms. He is also the Chief Scientist of the
“Formation Mechanism and Control Strategies of Haze in China” project as part of the Strategic
Priority Research Program of the CAS. Professor He was awarded the National Technology Invention
Award (China) in 2011, the National Science and Technology Progress Award (China) in 2014 and the
Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation in 2017. He was elected
as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017.
South‐South Cooperation to Tackle Environmental Challenges
Min Yang
Research Center for Eco‐Environmental Sciences, CAS
Professor and deputy director of Research Center for Eco‐Environmental
Sciences (RCEES), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is now focusing on the
following research topics: identification and control of harmful pollutants in
drinking water and industrial wastewater. Except for academic research, he is
also active in governmental and industrial consulting activities. His group has
published over 250 papers in international journals, applied for over 100
patents, and provided technological support to over 20 wastewater treatment engineering projects.
He created North Research Center for Rural Area Wastewater Treatment affiliated with the Ministry
of Urban‐Rural Development in 2008, CAS‐TWAS Center of Excellence for Water and Environment in
2013, and National Engineering Lab for Industrial Wastewater Treatment Technologies in 2016. He is
also the director of the last two institutions.

Hossein Ganjidoust received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Kansas State
University, Manhattan, Kansas in 1976, 1st MS in Industrial Management from
Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Missouri in 1977 and 2nd MS in
Sanitary Engineering from the University of Missouri‐Columbia in 1978 and PhD
in Environmental Engineering from the University of Missouri‐Rolla in 1988.
From March 1995 to April 1996, he was on a Year of Sabbatical Leave At The
National Institute for Resources & Environment (NIRE), Tsukuba Science City, Tsukuba, and Ibaraki,
Japan. He has over 30 years’ experience in teaching and research in graduate levels and is presently
engaged as Full Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering, Civil & Environmental
Engineering Faculty, at Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran, I.R. Iran. Dr. Ganjidoust’s research
interests include water & wastewater, industrial and hazardous waste handling, treatment and
disposal. He has supervised more than 20 research projects, and many PhD and MS students’ thesis.
At present time, he has supervisor of 6 PhD theses and 8 MS thesis.
He has published over 120 papers in scientific national and ISI Journals and over 150 conference
proceedings on his research. He is co‐author of the book entitled: "Application of Moving Bed Biofilm
Reactor (MBBR) in Sanitary & Industrial Wastewater Treatment", Tarbiat Modares Univ. Published in
February 2011 and a chapter on: “Hazardous Waste Management in Islamic Republic of Iran, HWM
Policies and Practices in Asian Countries” published by Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Tokyo in
October 2001.
Trends in Advance Wastewater Treatment for Water Reuse and Recycling
Seyed Mehdi Borghei
Sharif University of Technology
Seyed Mehdi Borghei is professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering
Department at Sharif University of Technology. He joined Sharif University of
Technology as a faculty member in 1977. Dr. Borghei's main field of interest is
water and wastewater engineering and has been working in this field for 40
years. He is currently the head of “Biochemical and Bio‐environmental Research
Centre” at Sharif University. He is a member of environmental engineering
branch of "Iranian Academy of Science", and has been a consultant to different organizations
including "Ministry of Industry and mines", "Ministry of Water and Energy" and many large industries.
His research interests include "water pollution control", "water and wastewater treatment" and
"water management and re‐use".
Sino‐Iran Cooperation on water and environment
Amir Hossein Hamidian
University of Tehran
Amir Hossein Hamidian is an Associate Professor in the University of Tehran. He
is the Director of the International Research Center for Water and Environment
(IRCWE) and the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Natural Environment,
University of Tehran. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of
Tehran, Iran followed by a Ph.D. (2009) from the University of Otago, New
Zealand in environmental engineering. Then, he started his career as an
Assistant Professor in the University of Tehran, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.
He has worked in several national and international projects, including CLIVAR, and awarded several
awards including research fellowship in the USA and China. He is the member of the editorial board of
several international journals, and has been the supervisor of more than 40 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
He has published more than 100 research papers and three books in the University of Tehran. In
Cooperation with the Research Center for Eco‐Environmental Sciences‐ Chinese Academy of Sciences
he established the IRCWE in 2016.

Incorporating Imprecise Data in Parameter Estimations: An Example from Groundwater Modeling
Mohammad Mahdi Rajabi

Dr. Rajabi is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at Tarbiat
Modares University, Iran. He received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, and
M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Sharif University of
Technology. His research interests include numerical modeling of flow and
contaminant transport in porous media, uncertainty analysis, Monte Carlo
methods and data assimilation. He has over nine years of experience as a
consultant and project manager in hydrogeologic investigations, water quality modeling studies and
integrated water resources management. Dr. Rajabi serves as the co‐chair of the organizing
committee for the “Sino‐Iranian Workshop on water Environment”.

From “Sponge Campus” to “Sponge City”
Baoling Yuan
Huaqiao University
Dr. Baoling Yuan is a professor in the Department of Municipal Engineering at
Huaqiao University. In 2002, she received her Ph.D. degree in Environmental
Engineering from Research Center on Eco‐Environmental Science, CAS. Dr. Yuan
worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Structural
and Environmental Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong, and
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois
at Urbana ‐ Champaign.
Dr. Yuan's interests are driven by the desire to understand the role of microbes and manage
interfaces between microbiological and chemical processes to provide service to interdisciplinary
nexus of waste (water)‐environment‐sustainability with focus on:
• Advanced oxidation processes technology (photocatalytic oxidation technology, ferrate, Fenton
reagent etc.) for or the remediation of contaminants from drinking water, wastewater or soil.
• Development of phosphorus adsorbent and high efficient coagulation technology for cleaning up of
the polluted urban river, stream or lake.
Dr. Yuan’s research has been supported by government agencies (NSFC, Environmental Protection
Agency, Construction Agency), and industrial funds (Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant, Waste
Management Inc.). Dr. Yuan has published more than 100 peer‐reviewed journal articles as first
author or corresponding author.

Dr. Omid Bozorg‐Haddad is a distinguished professor at the University of
Tehran, Iran. His teaching and research interests include water resources,
energy, and environmental systems analysis, engineering, planning, and
management as well as application of simulation techniques and optimization algorithms in water
related systems. He has published more than 40 books and book chapters, 300 journal and 200
conference papers. He has also supervised more than 100 M.Sc. thesis and Ph.D. dissertations.
Harmful algae and antibiotic resistance genes in river and reservoir ecosystems of Xiamen
Jun Yang

Dr Jun Yang has over 18 years of research experience in plankton ecology, and
currently leads a research group in aquatic ecology at Institute of Urban
Environment. He received PhD from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese
Academy of Sciences in 2006. From 2006 to 2008, he worked as a Killam
Postdoctoral Fellow at Earth Sciences Department, Dalhousie University. He has
published 44 first‐author/corresponding‐author peer reviewed SCI papers in
international journals including ISME Journal and Water Research. Yang’s research has been focusing
on microbial plankton diversity and ecology in the urban environment, from drinking water and
landscape water to waste water. Scientific topics include the aquatic ecological safety and microbial
food web.

Alireza Pendashteh

Alireza Pendashteh was born in 1972 in Astaneh Ashrafieh, Iran. He got his
Bachelor Degree in chemical engineering in 1995 from Petroleum University of
Technology, Ahwaz, Iran. He received his MSc. Degree in chemical engineering
from Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran in 1998. After graduation, he worked in the
department of environment (DOE), Rasht, Iran, as an inspector of industries. In
2000, he joined Environmental Research Institute of ACECR (Iranian Academic
Center for Education, Culture and Research), Rasht, Iran as a member of educational board and
designer of industrial wastewater treatment plants. In 2007, he enrolled in the Ph.D. program at
Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He received his PhD in 2009. After graduation
continued working in ACECR. In 2015, he joined university of Guilan. Now he is doing research and
consulting in the field of sanitary and industrial wastewater treatment. His interest is wastewater
treatment, membrane technology and produced water treatment. He is also consultant of Rasht
industrial city (Rasht‐Iran).

Karim Ghasemipanah is an assistant professor of (RIPI) and head of of water
and wastewater treatment and reuse group from 2009. In 2009, he obtain a
PhD in Water and wastewater engineering University of Tehran (UT).He is the
project manager of 8 industrial wastewater treatment and reuse plant. He
obtained the top researcher in RIPI, NIOC in 2012 and top technology provider
in Petroleum Ministry in 2013. He has published 6 ISI papers and 11 conference papers. He has

Zhang ziqiu got his Bachelor degree in Environmental protection from Nanjing
TECH Universiy in 2005, Master degree in chemical engineering from BeiJing
forest University in 2010. During his master degree, his research topic is about
the HAAs in drinking water. This topic is organized by Ministry of Housing and
Urban‐Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. And the sense of
this project is to get the condition and regularity of distribution of HAAs all over
china. Besides that, during the period of working in LiHe company, he took charge of some research
projects about applications of online monitoring equipments in environment protection for surface
water. Some of the projects are organized by national engineering laboratory for advanced
technology and equipment of water environment pollution monitoring. Besides that, he also joined in
research projects for other kinds of environmental monitoring such as underground water,waster
water and so on.

Hamed Ketabchi is currently the faculty member of Water Resources
Engineering Department at Tarbiat Modares University and Water Engineering
Research Institute, Tehran, Iran. He was awarded his Ph.D. in civil engineering ‐
in the field of water resources and environmental engineering ‐ from Sharif
University of Technology, in November 2014. His main research interest
involves discovering new perspectives to the problems of groundwater
resources engineering with special concern on simulation, management, and soft computing in the
context of decision models development. His main objective is taking into account the complexities of
real‐world applications in this field to develop sustainable strategies in groundwater resources
management. He has more than 15 publications with high impact factors while he was the main
author of two review papers in the field of coastal groundwater optimization, seawater intrusion and
sea‐level rise impacts on coastal aquifers in 2015 and 2016. Also, He has more than 20 professional
experiences in several countries such as Iran, Qatar, Oman, Sri Lanka, and Iraq. He is the member of
several national and international research associations and invited peer reviewer for various

Prof. Xin Yu got his Bachelor degree in Environmental Biology from Nanjing
Universiy in 1996, Master degree in Environmental Science from Chengdu
Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999, and Ph.D degree in in
Municipal Engineering, Tsinghua University in 2003. From then on, he joined
inSchool of the Environment, Nanjing University as an assistant professor. From
2005,he worked as a visiting scholar and postdoc fellow in Michigan State
University (U.S.) and University of Waterloo (Canada), respectively. From 2008 onwards, he joined
Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences as a professor. His research interests
include biological and advanced treatment of drinking water, principles of drinking water safety,
health‐related microbiology and molecular ecology of water environment and water treatment. He
was the PI for more than 30 grants from NSFC, national Hi‐Tech program and other sponsors. He has
published more than 120 peer‐reviewed papers. He is the member of 100 Talents program of CAS. He
also serves as the board member of drinking water advanced treatment society of China, microbial

Amir received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics from Sharif
University of Technology, the most high‐ranked technical university in Iran, and
M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at K.N. Toosi University of Technology. He
Ranked 1st among all the Mechanical Eng. Graduate Students in the First Year,
and totally Ranked 3rd at the End of M.Sc. Period, 2008. At the graduate
program in KNTU, He was able to work with professors that excelled at sharing
the excitement of their respective field. They opened the doors to let me explore my abilities and
talents even more. Thus, He received PHD Full scholarship from Waterloo University in system design
engineering, Nanotechnology, in 2014, but because of his job as a project manager preferred to
continue his responsibility. Hence, now, he is a professional project manager with lots of honors
especially in renewable energy like hydraulic power plant. During 17 years (2001‐2018), He
participated in more than 50 multi‐disciplinary projects, and worked with 7 companies. As a project

Dr. Abolghasem Alighardashi was born on December 1972, in Iran. He received
his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering‐Water Eng. at Iran University of Science &
Technology, M.Sc. in Civil Engineering‐Environmental Eng. at University of
Tehran and Ph.D. in Processes and Products Engineering; at Laboratory of
Chemical Engineering Sciences (INPL‐France). He started his professional work
from 2000 in Research Niroo Institute (NRI, Iran) as research expert. He was
academic staff (assistant professor) from 2006 at Power and Water University of Technology (PWUT)
and next Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), Tehran‐IRAN. He was head of Water & Wastewater
Engineering Department at PWUT (from 2010 to 2014). He is deputy of research, Faculty of Civil,
Water and Environmental Engineering (from October 2014) and head of industry‐university
collaboration office (from 2107) at SBU.
He published over 25 papers at international scientific journals and 60 articles in national and
international scientific conferences mainly in water quality, water and wastewater treatments
subjects.

Yanlong Zhang

Dr. Yanlong Zhang is a Post‐doctoral Researcher in the College of the
Environment and Ecology, Xiamen University, China (International Postdoctoral
Exchange Program). He received his Ph.D. at Tohoku University, Japan. Before
obtaining this present position, Dr. Zhang had two years technical development
experience as a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) fellow. His
research interests are wastewater treatment, solid waste management and
nutrient recovery, especially the anaerobic biotechnologies including anaerobic ammonium oxidation
(anammox) and anaerobic digestion. He has published 18 journal papers in English and Japanese
(Bioresource Technology, RSC advances, Biochemical Engineering Journal, Ecological Engineering,
International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation, Chemosphere, Journal of Japan Society of Civil
Engineers, etc.). He is also a reviewer of Bioresource Technology.

Mohammad Ali Hosseinian Sarajehloo was born on March 1988, in Iran. He
received his B.S. in Civil Engineering‐Water Eng. from Tabriz University in 2012,
and M.S. in Civil Engineering‐Environment Eng. from Amirkabir University of
Technology in 2014. He was the top student in M.S. course. His thesis
supported by the Industrial Parks Organization of Alborz Province and
registered as an industrial design in Amirkabir University. He has started his
PhD at Tarbiat Modares University in Civil Engineering‐Environment Eng. since September 2016. At
present time, he is a PhD candidate. His thesis is about removing contaminants from groundwater
using Permeable Reactive Bio Barrier (PRBB). His main research interest involves water and
wastewater treatment, groundwater treatment and solid waste management. He has several papers
in the national and international scientific conferences. On September 2014, his article full supported
by the Japan’s government in "The 11th International Symposium on Southeast Asian Water
Environment".

Sarah Sadeghi Lafmejani received her B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental
Engineering from Amirkabir University in Tehran in 2013. She got her master
degree in Environmental Engineering from K.N.Toosi University in Tehran. Her
thesis was on “Prediction of air emissions coming from wastewater treatment
basins”. She was attended the first student in Ph.D. entrance exam in 2017. She
has presented 6 papers in conferences which were published in the conference
proceedings. Her interests are in the area of water and wastewater, industrial and hazardous waste
treatment.
High‐Voltage Electrospun Nanofiber Materials for Pollution Control

Dr. Yu‐Ming Zheng, professor of Environmental Engineering in IUE and awardee
of CAS “Hundred Talents Program”, is Deputy Director of CAS Key Laboratory of
Urban Pollutant Conversion, the Key Talent of CAS Center for Excellence in
Regional Atmospheric Environment, and Deputy Director of the National Labor
Insurance Industry Expert Committee of China Textile Commerce Association
(CTCA). Professor Zheng obtained his BSc in Applied Chemistry in 2001 and
Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering in 2006, from University of Science and Technology of China.
From 2006 to 2012, he worked as a research fellow in Department of Environmental Science and
Engineering at National University of Singapore.
His research interest focuses on “Materials and Technology for Pollution Prevention”: electrospun
nanofiber membranes and their applications (fine particle filtration, forward osmosis, and membrane
distillation), high‐efficient adsorptive and catalytic functional materials, zero discharge of industrial
wastewater, and rapid detection of micro‐pollutants.
Professor Zheng has published over 40 papers in SCI journals, attracting over 1,500 citations (H‐index:
23), and applied for over 40 patents (20 authorized). He also developed the receipt and production
line for high‐efficiency electrospun PM2.5 protective mask, and drafted Group Standard for “PM2.5
Protective Mask” and the National Standard for “Specifications for Daily Protective Mask”. He
received CTCA “Industry Contribution” (Y2015‐2016) award.
Conceptualization of Flooding Effects on Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

Davood Mahmoodzadeh is Ph.D. Candidate of environmental engineering
under supervision of Prof. Mohammad Karamouz, in the Department of Civil
Engineering at University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran. He was awarded his M.Sc. in
civil engineering in the field of environmental engineering from Sharif
University of Technology in December 2013. His main field of interest is
groundwater modeling considering the climate change effects and the quality
management aspects such as seawater intrusion in coastal regions. Currently, his research is focused
to assess some important factors such as the aquifer heterogeneity, bed and land‐surface slope,
boundary conditions, storm effects, game theory implementation, and environmental externality
estimations, in this field. He has 5 international publications with high impact factors. He is member
of several national and international research associations.
Struvite recovery from livestock wastewater: the story of antibiotic transport and control

Dr. Zhi‐Long Ye is an associate professor in the Institute of Urban Environment,
Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include nutrient recovery
from wastewater, landfill leachate treatment, and solid waste management. At
present, he focuses on the research of phosphorus recovery from wastewater,
and the main outcomes includes the development of thermal dynamics, process
optimization, pioneered method of determining crystalline aggregation and
centimeter‐scale granulation, antibiotic transport and control in struvite recovery, and full‐scale
demonstration etc. The performance of his works was reported by the European Sustainable
Phosphorus Platform twice (Scope Newsletter 114, 2015:15‐16; Scope Newsletter 123, 2017:30‐31).
Prof. Ye has undertaken several research projects, including the China National Key Research Project,
China Hi‐Tech Research and Development Program (863) and Fujian Science and Technology Plan
Project. He published more than 40 articles in the international journals, such as Water Research,
Chemical Engineering Journal and Journal of Hazardous Materials, and 9 patents are authorized.

Sepideh Mohammadi Sepasi recieved her B.Sc. in 2010 and MSc degrees in
2012 in Civil Engineering both from University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. After
considerable working in this area, she has started continuing her further studies
in environmental engineering field as a PhD student in Tarbiat modares
university, Tehran, Iran from 2016. She has published a scientific paper,
presented 5 papers in conferences which were published in the conference
proceedings and accepted in IAESTE Spain internship program. Her interests are in the area of
wastewater treatment, soil remediation, industrial and hazardous waste treatment.
