Synopsis

Leading juice manufacturer and beverage distributor, Sir Juice, like

most companies, faced distribution challenges of high costs, lack of

visibility of vehicles and route execution as well as excess wastage of

time and costs relating to vehicle, driver and delivery performance.

VSc seized the opportunity to generate optimised sequenced routing

for deliveries and enabled visibility of these planned routes, creating a

comparison with live route execution in order to maximise visibility

and time & cost savings.

Company

Sir Juice started in 1985 in a small factory in JHB and later formed part

of AVI until it was transformed into a totally independent entity owned

by 3 brothers from KZN and one other partner.

Sir Juice is a manufacturer and distributor of premium fruit juice. Sir

Juice has a variety of products including Pulp, Fruit salad, Iced tee and

Morning dew (a cheaper premium juice), added to these Sir Juice also

distributes 100plus and iCafe

drinks.

Sir Juice supplies most of the top

restaurants, coffee shops and ho-

tels in South Africa. The 3 blend-

ing plants in Durban, JHB and

Cape Town also serve as factory

shops. Sir Juice also supplies

many bottom and top end stores

and retail outlets.

Challenges

Sir Juice used a ERP system called MFG to keep stock, cre-ate orders and route deliveries via predetermined master routes.

These master routes were not optimal in that they resulted in high distribution costs. There was also no visibility to move customers from routes if a route was overloaded or to combine different routes if they were under utilised resulting in both overloading and underutilized routes being executed.

Sir Juice had very little visibility on actual route execution. Drivers could follow any sequence, stop outside of the customer geo-fences and route deviations were common. Overtime and vehicle break-downs was a big concern.

The Solution

The Sir Juice Master routes were optimized using the Roadshow sales and ter-

ritory planner. Least cost routes and sequences were created and used as the

new base for daily planning.

Roadshow route planner was implemented to create the daily distribution

plan. A dedicated VSC resource based at Sir Juice JHB depot applies and

manipulates these routes based on available orders. These least cost routes

are then implemented and sent to the daily route manager for planned vs.

actual measuring.

The Daily Route Manager (DRM), which tracks planned vs. actual, was imple-

mented to monitor and manage deviances in the plan.

Through Roadshow Sir Juice is able to create the least cost distribution plan

and through DRM accurately measure route compliance and execution of the

plan. The DRM outputs are periodically fed back into the routing system en-

suring continuous improvement.

Through comprehensive KPI’s and monthly meetings with Sir Juice improve-

ments are measured and focus areas identified.
