BARONIAL MISSIVE From His Excellency, Wilhelm, Baron of Illiton

From time to time, if we are fortunate, we may

experience something that reminds us of the reason we

play in this game. I was privileged to enjoy just such an

experience at this most recent Festival of Maidens in the

Shire of Wurm Wald. I have attended Maidens for a

great many years, as have many of the people of Illiton,

Athelington and Lochmorrow, and through those years

I have myself volunteered in varied capacities toward

the support of Wurm Wald and this venerable event. I

have never been alone in this tradition of service, but at

this most recent Maidens it seemed that everywhere I

turned, there were the people of Illiton, donating their

time and service.

I observed my glorious Baronowa (in whose eyes the

stars rise and set), leading tour groups of the new and

new-ish people of the Society and explaining the

meanings of all the pointy hats and colorful belts. I saw

Alured Husher and Arianna of Illiton holding open

doors for merchants and serving at Troll, and later

helping move, assemble and disassemble the Baronial

Thrones for Court. Muriel Zimmermannin retained for

Their Highnesses throughout the day. Fuyutsukime

Hattori coordinated the rapier list. Anselm Mareshal,

Warder Maire and Madeline Pappillion of Athelington

served as list marshals, and Lady Inez worked as a list

mistess. THL Elayne and Baron Gareth guarded the

Royalty Room, and Elayne spent much of the rest of her

day in the Scribal Room, working. Master John

coordinated the feast entertainment with his inimitable

style, and after feast I witnessed Master John and

Warder Maire, Baronowa Alzbeta, Alured and Arianna,

along with our new members David and Sara Meister

helping reset the hall. Allison Renee of Roseholm and

Jana of Illiton helped our fighters throughout the day.

Baroness Constance ran an auction in support of those

proud (if possibly deranged) warriors soon to join in the

Battle of Nations.

All of this industry and service did not appear to

diminish anyone’s enjoyment of the day or overburden

anyone with work. People of Illiton still attended classes,

fought in the lists or watched others do so, shopped

among the merchants, or just schmoozed with friends.

People of Illiton enjoyed the feast and the dancing and

revelry that followed. Two young men (Duncan and

Austin) joined the ranks of Illiton’s authorized fighters.

Most wonderful of all, Their Royal Highnesses Savaric

and Julianna presided over the betrothal of our own

Lady Inez to her new fiancée, Seto “the Confused

Saracen”. I think it can safely be said that a pleasurable

time was had by all.

I have repeatedly encouraged our Populace to adhere to

the adage “work at home, play abroad” that we may

showcase to all the shining jewel that is our Barony, but

also continually note that this Barony’s service to the

Crown and the Society is not limited to Illiton’s borders,

as evidenced throughout the day at Maidens. The depth

and quality of Illiton’s service is well-known to the

Crown, and to groups beyond Illiton’s borders.

Please take this lesson to heart. Service need not be a

burden. Baronowa Alzbeta and I continue to encourage

people to assist our Officers, guild heads, and event-o-

crats and to consider assuming these duties themselves.

We have events ahead on the calendar and opportunities

for our Populace to step forward and lend support. We

are a Society of volunteers, and Illiton will grow and

thrive if members of the Populace step forward to learn

and volunteer for those responsibilities vital to the

health of this group.

If you notice, as I have, someone whose efforts or

attitudes improve the SCA as a whole and Illiton in

specific, making this a more enjoyable place to play,

Baronowa Alzbeta and I wish to hear of it so that we

can communicate to Their Majesties the wonderful

works of our people. Put in your own recommendations

through the online recommendation site at

www.midrealm.org if you feel someone is deserving of

recognition, and when you do, let us know who and

why so that we can submit a supporting

recommendation.

Our people in Illiton, Athelington and Lochmorrow

should be commended for their tireless efforts and

selfless service to this Dream we all embrace.

We remain proud to be yours in Service,

Baron Wilhelm and Baronowa Alzbeta

Postscript: We mourn the recent passing of Illiton’s

founding Baron, Orson die Grosse Mauer. With

founding Baroness Maria Teresa Ribiero dos Santos,

Baron Orson led this Barony through its first years, and

his influence is still felt. I am proud to be his latest

successor, and ask that the Populace of Illiton,

Athelington and Lochmorrow join me in respectfully

raising a glass in his honor. – Baron Wilhelm

My day as a retainer for the Prince

By Lady Muriel Zimmermannin

At Festival of Maidens, Champaign, Il during February, I had the pleasure of serving Prince Saveric. I was

placed with another more experienced member, Mistress Maggie of Cnoc Cait who was very helpful in

teaching me what my duties were. The duties of a retainer are to carry the Royal drinking vessel, to carry a

bag to hold all of their items, a note book and pen and to carry anything else for them they may wish.

The key to the job is to not be noticed. You are to follow behind the Royal a few paces and to fade into the

background. Any time someone presents them with something like a gift you should get their name and

information.

I served a two hour session on this day. I watched his son get authorized in youth combat. We watched

various combat tournaments and I stood at the side of the platform while the Prince sat in his throne talking

with the members.

I would recommend this service to the Crown as a way to get involved and learn a bit about the Royals. I

see this as a good opportunity to get a feel for how the courts run and “get your feet wet”. I enjoyed my

service and felt it was a privilege to serve.

A Tribute to Baron Orson

As to "The Great Wall"...

Not too long after Orson joined the Society, he was engaged in a game of Clench-a-Wench.

For you young pups, this was a game involving grabbing and kissing members of the

opposite sex, and was a wild combination of Red Rover, Tag, Spin the Bottle and Combined

Martial Arts. It has fallen into disuse now, mostly since it was slightly more physically

dangerous than fighting heavy melees without a helmet.

As part of the game, Zarina Daeth (now Duchess Zarina, and my first Queen) had to get

past Orson without getting kissed. She zigged and Orson zagged, but due the reduced agility

of his prosthetic leg, he inadvertently body blocked Zarina, who rebounded and landed some

feet away on her refined and ladylike backside. Orson was suitably remorseful and apologetic,

and all was resolved amicably. Almost immediately after that, Orson adopted the sobriquet

of "die Grosse Maur" or, in English, "The Great Wall."

For your enjoyment and information, and the memory of a fine man.

Master John Inchingham, The Fool – Madiens 2012

Page 14: Siren's Song spring 2012

Page 14

Master John Inchingham the Fool is the senior active squire of Sir Ixtlilxochitl the Aztec.

John joined the SCA while living in Austin, TX (Barony of Bryn Gwlad, Kingdom of

Ansteorra) in 1988. He is a member of the Orders of the Laurel and the Pelican and a

Companion of the Orders of the Bronze Ring, Cavendish Knot and Dragon’s Tooth. He

formerly served as Middle Kingdom Rapier Marshal.

Master John has numerous dependents: under the Order of the Pelican—Master Philippe de

Lyon and The Honorable Lady Catalin Zoldzem; under the Order of the Laurel—Master

Alexander de Seton, Master (Baron) Dahrien Cordell of Northshield, Lord Olaf ByGolly,

Lady Lorelei Skye and Lord David de Longville. Two of his previous dependents—Master

Cerian Cantwr and Master Torquil MacGillavrey, Baron of Sternfeld—have formed

households of their own.

John’s current projects include continuing to fence and participate in armored combat. He

plans to do both at the upcoming Pennsic War, as well as to perform in a concert with

Master Cerian and any of their dependents who are available. John is working on a Super

Top Secret Project that won’t be revealed until it is ready. He continues to market CDs and

songbooks featuring his works and those of his dependents and former dependents and he

would like to produce more CDs in the future.

Master John Inchingham’s persona has developed over the years. He is an English jester or

fool who likes to explore the Known World, not as a wealthy traveler but one who must

entertain for meals, lodging and drinks. He gets rides whenever he can from folks he comes

in contact with on his journeys. He often can be found sitting at the foot of the table or

sleeping on the floor of the feast hall. John will do just about anything to get a laugh or

some free food: he sings, recites poetry, tells tales, performs Shakespeare and juggles (badly).

About the only thing he can’t do is play an instrument—and he often pretends he can do

that too. John’s Irish wife, Maire, has made him more respectable but his children are

responsible for his gray hair.

Interview by Muriel Zimmermannin.
