What is SIRI?Siri is an intelligent personal assistant helps you to get things just by asking.Siri on iPhone & iPad lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more.The word SIRI stands for Speech Interpretation & Recognition Interface.3

Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Siri unlike traditional voice recognition software does not require to remember keywords and speaks specific commands.Siri understands our natural speech & it asks you questions if it need more information to complete a task.4

Siri uses 3G and Wi-Fi networks to communicate rapidly with Apples data centers. It helps Siri to understand what you say & what youre asking for, then quickly return a response.Siri uses the processing power of dual-core A5 chip in iPhone 4S.5

HistorySiri was founded in 2007 by Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer and Tom Gruber together with Norman Winarsky from SRI International's venture group.Siri's speech recognition engine is thought to be provided by Nuance Communications, a speech technology company, although this has not been officially acknowledged by either Apple or Nuance.

Siri is a spin-out from the SRI International Artificial Intelligence Center and is the hard work of about 40 years of research.Siri was acquired by Apple on April 28,2010 and original application ceased to function on October 15,2011.Apple introduced the iPhone 4S with implementation of Siri on October 4,2011.

Speech Recognition-Technology behind Siri Speech Recognition(SR) is the technology that can translate spoken words into text.These systems analyze the persons specific voice and use it to fine tune the recognition of that persons speech which results in more accurate transcription.Some SR system need training are called speaker dependent systems. SIRI is a speaker independent system.8

Fundamentals of Speech RecognitionIts a multileveled pattern recognition task.In this, acoustical signals are examined & structured into a hierarchy of sub word units, word, phrases & sentences.The structure of a standard speech recognition system is illustrated in figure.9

How it works?Raw speech- speech is typically sampled at a high frequency. This yields a sequence of amplitude values over time.Signal analysis- Raw speech should be transformed &compressed in order to simplify subsequent processing. Many signal analysis techniques are available that can extract useful features &compress the data by a factor of ten without losing any important information.11

Speech frames- The result of signal anaysis is a sequence of speech frames. These frames may be augmented by their own 1s t& 2nd derivatives, providing explicit information about speech dynamics, this leads to improved performance.Acoustic models- in order to analyze the speech frames for their acoustic contents, we need a set of acoustic models. It is created by taking audio recordings of speech and their text transcriptions, and using software to create statistical12

representations of the sounds that make up each word. It is used by a speech recognition engine to recognize speech.Acoustic Analysis: A type of research in which the sounds of a dialect or language are studied with sound analysis equipment for various properties. Acoustic analysis is often used to measure vowel position, vowel length, and prosody.13

iCloudICloud is a cloud storage service from Apple. Cloud storage is a model of networked online storage where data is stored in virtualized pools of storage.The service allows users to store data such as music and iOS applications on remote computer servers for download to multiple devices such as iOS-based devices running iOS5.

IRISIRIS is a personal assistant application for Android. The application uses natural language processing to answer questions based on user voice request.IRIS currently supports Call, Text, Contact Lookup and Web Search actions including playing videos, movies reviews, recipes, news, weather, places and others. It was developed in 8 hours by Narayan Babu and his team at Dexetra Software Solutions Private Limited, a Kochi based firm. The name is Siri backwards, Siri being the original application for the same use owned by Apple and stands for "Intelligent Rival Imitator of Siri".

With the app, an Android user can just "ask" Iris instead of "Google-searching" for information. The developers claim Iris can talk on topics ranging from Philosophy, Culture, History, science to general conversation. 16

Conclusion Siri is an tremendous invention of 21st century. Though it also have some limitations. Siris inventors trying to making it popular all over the world by introducing it in almost all languages. Scientists are trying to implement this technology on computers by developing the software more efficiently. It is not far that the computer will become Eyes free.24
