Overview of the Program

Outward Bound Australia became a Registered Training Organisation and started delivering programs in September 1999. Since then we have delivered more than 32 programs to over 280 participants. Our SIS40313 Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation program is highly regarded amongst other providers, and offers a lot more than just a Cert IV. The duration of our program is 10-11 months. The program is based around the SIS40313 Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation, but also delivers training in a wide variety of other areas which provides all the relevant skills and qualifications to be an outdoor professional within Australia. We place great importance on the development of our participants and are committed to providing the most complete and thorough training possible. This training program is residential. You will live on-base at Outward Bound throughout your program. All food, accommodation and travel for the program is included. The program utilises a holistic approach to education. Formal off-the-job training in areas such as technical skills, experiential education theory and practice and facilitation skills, is combined with on-the-job experience under the supervision and mentorship of Senior Instructors, Coordinators, and Trainers. This on the job training is unique to our program and allows for you to travel to regions across Australia such as: the Snowy River Region in Victoria, Walpole in Western Australia, Uki in Northern New South Wales, and the areas surrounding the Australian Capital Territory. This holistic approach to training means our participants are ‘Industry Ready’ upon graduation

The Program - Our participants tell it like it is

Following are some thoughts from the participants who have completed the program: “I’ve always loved having wilderness adventures, being out in the bush. It’s what makes me feel most alive. I’d always wondered if I could possibly make a living out of being outdoors and sharing amazing experiences and inspiration with others. Well, Outward Bound has made that possible.” “I started the program with Outward Bound in July 2012. In only 8 short months, with the guidance of extremely committed and experienced trainers, I’m now a qualified outdoor instructor.” “I am sharing fantastic outdoor experiences with young people, who, in the process, discover who they are and more importantly who they can be; inspired by what’s around them and what they can do. It’s given me the tools I need to help bring outdoor adventure and all of its benefits to others, and I love it!”

“I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Charlie Program here at Outward Bound. Each day I am learning new skills with an amazing bunch of people, and being challenged by a variety of activities in the outdoors. It is certainly an experience like no other.”

Lauren Sinclair Charlie Participant 2013

“Self-development at Outward Bound Australia only seems limited by a closed mind.”

Lewis Munro Charlie Participant 2013

“I came looking for white water rafting qualifications and discovered the complete package, it was too good to pass up! The fact that it was an organisation with bases all around the world and with the opportunity to potentially work in these bases, I couldn't get my application in quickly enough.”

Living and studying at Outward Bound Australia

It is an interesting, vibrant and diverse life we lead at Outward Bound Australia. It is definitely more than a job or training provider - it is a lifestyle. Our participants are completely immersed in Outward Bound Australia’s community and culture while they are in training, and function as a valuable part of the team. Participants have the opportunity to interact with Outward Bound Instructors and staff throughout the duration of the program. This gives our participants insight into the way Outward Bound Australia runs, along with allowing for participation in staff activities and social events happening around base. Living and training alongside your peers allows you to grow together as a program group and form a bond amongst each other that is exclusive to your group. This unique experience is just another reason our program is second to none and continues to assist people in growing not only in their training but as valuable members of the wider community.

Living and working at Outward Bound Australia

Outward Bound Australia Instructors have the option to live on-site at Outward Bound Australia’s National Base in Tharwa, Australian Capital Territory. From here they travel Australia-wide to deliver Outward Bound programs. Our programs are conducted as continuous expeditions with activities such as ropes courses, rock-climbing, abseiling, rafting, caving, initiative games and service to the community. As an instructor you could expect to spend up to half of their time living and working in a variety of base camps in Australia’s National Parks. Life as an Instructor can be like a continuous Outward Bound course. There is always something new to learn, ever-increasing challenges and plenty of opportunity for your development. You will be a role model to participants and the wider community and as such will be expected to attain and uphold our core values of Integrity, Responsibility, Resilience, Compassion, Service and Human Potential.
