Clinical Training Innovation

The Mobile Simulation Centre (MSC) is an innovative method of delivering quality, up to date education and training to health staff working in rural and remote locations, including Local Health District staff, NSW Ambulance and Justice and Forensic Mental Health staff.

Clinicians in these areas do not always have the same access to ongoing education and training opportunities as metropolitan health staff, so the MSC brings the training to them.

Operations

The MSC is a state-wide asset managed by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI). HETI works in partnership with Local Health Districts, NSW Ambulance and Justice and Forensic Mental Health to customise the delivery of training at each site, resulting in an education model that meets the needs of the health service and the clinicians undergoing training. The MSC delivers scenario based simulation activities for 8-10 participants at a time, often for multi-disciplinary teams. Simulations can range from a heart attack to childbirth, and are followed by video playback, review and debriefing so clinicians can learn from the experience.

Layout and Dimensions

The MSC is inside a purpose-built semi-trailer, and is transported by a dedicated prime mover. In total, it is 14.6 metres long.

The MSC has 4 rooms, including a ward and resuscitation simulation room, debriefing/lecture room and a control room. The MSC is supported by a Mini Mobile Sim Van, which provides simulated education within health facilities.

Equipment

The MSC is equipped with the latest in high technology, high fidelity simulation mannequins and includes SimMan® 3g, Sim Man® Essential, SimMoM TM, SimNewB®, SimBaby TM and SimJunior®. Task trainers on board the MSC include adult and neonatal intubation and airway trainers, cannulation arms, Interchangeable Catheterisation and Enema Task Trainers, Chester Chest TM PICC line and Mr Head Hurt Trauma Trainer. Defibrillation trainers include the HeartStart® Frx and live defibrillation occurs via a Zoll defibrillator positioned on the cardiac arrest trolley.

Quality training and education in a purpose built mobile simulation facility for health staff in rural and remote communities.

Invaluable onsite learning tool that provides a rural hospital with the skills and team management to ensure that the ED department is providing best care.Queanbeyan

The simulation is extremely real creating the same stressful situation as in a rural remote ED. Trangie

Really great simulation. As close as you can get to real life. Very beneficial to do in a safe environment. Coonamble

Thankyou for giving us all an opportunity to develop/consolidate skills in a non-threatening environment. As a new grad, I especially value the chance to practice the scenarios alongside my experienced colleagues. Very worthwhile. Queanbeyan
