By Train
The main London to Hastings line stops in Battle with half hourly services from London Charing Cross and Waterloo East. Battle is just 78 minutes away from Charing Cross. www.southeasternrailway.co.uk
By Bus or CoachA daily National Express bus service runs from London, www.nationalexpress.com. It is also a major stopping route for buses that service the local area.
By RoadBattle is 105km from London, 90km from Gatwick Airport, 85km from the Port of Dover, 72km from the Channel Tunnel (Folkestone), 48km Newhaven Port. From the M25, take Junction 5 to the A21 towards Hastings. Follow the A21 to Johns Cross roundabout and take the second exit (A2100) to Battle.
The exceptional fl oral displays throughout the town have been regularly acknowledged by the judges in the National In Bloom competition and the town received a Silver award on numerous occasions, most recently in 2013.
In the small parks category the Almonry garden has won the Gold award fi ve times.

An Unforgettable Visit
1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefi eld is the best place in the UK to learn about the Norman invasion of England and downfall of the Saxon king Harold at the historic battle of 1066.Take time to explore the abbey and battlefi eld, and lift the lid on the battle that changed the course of English history. Visit the interactive exhibitions and take the audio tour of the battlefi eld and abbey ruins.
An Oasis of Tranquility
Towards the northern end of the High Street, the Medieval Almonry and its Gardens, originally built in 1090, is now home to the Town Council and the Battle Museum of Local History. Here you will fi nd all manner of artefacts, including the only battleaxe to be discovered from the battlefi eld. As the town grew, the Church of St Mary the Virgin was built and it stands to this day to the east of the abbey gates. Here you will discover, among other things, a Norman font and rare 14th century wall paintings.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot
Did you know that in the 17th century Battle was the centre of the gunpowder industry? It is likely that Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder came from this area. The Battel Bonfi re Boyes celebrate the gunpowder plot each November with a spectacular fi reworks display and torchlight procession. Today Battle is a bustling market town and with good reason is hailed a ‘top-ten hidden gem of Europe’ by Lonely Planet. If you’ve never visited, make our 950th anniversary year the time you do! On 14th October 1066, this area which would become the picturesque market town of Battle, witnessed the most celebrated confrontation to take place on English soil – the Battle of Hastings.
Following his victory and coronation as King of England, between the years 1070 and 1094, William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey – a penance ordered by the Pope for the loss of life incurred in the confl ict. The town subsequently grew up beyond the abbey walls to become the thriving community you see today.

Tie in a visit with one of the quirkier annual events. Check out the annual Marbles Match on Good Friday, the Medieval Fayre in May, the Scarecrow Festival throughout the town in July, and the major re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings in October.

Arts & Culture
October’s Battle Arts & Music Festival will be even bigger and better in 2016, with the introduction of a headline event in collaboration with Glyndebourne. The festival will coincide with Pure Arts Group’s annual art fair and there’s the popular Battle Fringe in the town’s bars and restaurants too.
Add in three permanent galleries and it is easy to see how Battle holds its own against larger towns and cities.

Oldies and goodies include Every Last Friday (ELF), a unique live entertainment experience in many locations around Battle. Just choose a venue and the performers will come to you in 20 minute sessions on the last Friday of the month.

Pevensey Castle is a ‘must see’ attraction here, with a history stretching back over 16 centuries. Pevensey Castle chronicles more graphically than any other fortress the story of Britain’s south coast defences. It was built in the 4th century as one of the last and strongest of the Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ forts, ‘Anderida’, two-thirds of whose towered walls still stand. When the Roman army left Britain the Saxons began invading in earnest and the old fort was left derelict and abandoned. A few centuries later another invader, William, Duke of Normandy - and soon to become William the Conqueror, of course - landed nearby in the still existing bay and turned the fort into Pevensey Castle by building upon the old Roman walls. The castle has been threatened several times since then and during World War II it became a lookout over the channel for enemy aircraft. Today you can visit the famous English Heritage site at Pevensey Castle and experience its long and chequered history through various exhibits and displays.
Pevensey village leads up to the castle entrance and offers an interesting mix of weatherboard and stone cottages, antique shops, traditional pubs and cafes. The Pevensey Court House Museum in the High Street dates back to the thirteenth century. The building was used as the town hall and gaol until 1886. The court room with dock, cells and exercise yard are still intact and the museum also has a selection of local history displays to see.The dramatic Pevensey Bay lies on the shingle beach. During the 18th and 19th centuries it became involved in the south coast smuggling trade and in 1833 was the backdrop for a violent clash between smugglers and customs men. A number of Martello towers were erected along the bay at the beginning of the 19th century against Napoleonic attack. Pevensey Bay is well known today to all sailing enthusiasts. The local sailing club offers a variety of classes of boats and has a full programme of racing.The inspiring 31 mile 1066 Country Walk starts at Pevensey Castle, winds its way to Herstmonceux, through to Battle and across the countryside to Rye.
