UALBANY HEADS EAST FOR THE YALE INVITATIONAL The Great Danes play their second in-season tournament of the year, heading east to Connecticut to compete in the Yale Invita- tional. UAlbany opens against Boston College on Friday, Septem- ber 5th at 5 p.m., then plays tournament host Yale at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 6th and Minnesota at 5 p.m. This will be the first match between UAlbany and Boston College since 2004. UAlbany won that match in five sets to even the overall series at 1-1. The Great Danes have played Yale every year since 2010, with the series at 3-3 after Yale won in three last year. UAlbany and Minnesota have met once, a 3-0 victory for the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis in 2012. UAlbany coach MJ Engstrom is a graduate of the University of Minnesota in 2000. GREAT DANES PICKED #4 IN AE PRESEASON POLL After finishing tied for second in the conference last season, UAlbany was predicted to finish fourth in the America East pre- season coaches poll with 21 points. UMBC, the league runner-up in 2013, is predicted to finish first with 33 points, including three first-place votes. UNH is predict- ed to finish second, while Stony Brook is at third in the poll. LAST: UALBANY DROPS THREE IN DELAWARE INVITEUAlbany fell in a trio of matches in the UD Courtyard by Marriott Invitational to Delaware (1-3), Rhode Island (2-3) and Loyola Chicago (0-3) to open the year.

Amy Hunter led the team with 37 kills, including a career-high 19 against Delaware. Viktoriia Stroilo was named to the All-Tourna-ment Team with 52 digs and four aces, while Tatum Jungsten hit .300 with 14 kills and 10 blocks.

YOUNG GUNSUAlbany’s outside hitter corps is made up of four sophomores, reflectingtheyouthoftheteam.AmandaDolan,thereigningAmerica East Rookie of the Year, leads the unit after hitting .268 with 189 kills and 91 blocks. Amy Hunter was one of the top players down the stretch, earning 177 kills. Laini Leindecker will serve as a team captain after tallying 51 kills and 153 digs last year,whileOliviaSchonewisewasoneofthetopreserves,finish-ing with 86 kills and 59 digs.

The UAlbany team is a young squad with four freshmen, seven sophomores, one junior and two seniors. The outside hitter and setter corps are made up entirely of underclassmen.

CAN YOU DIG IT?UAlbany sported the best back row rotation in the America East last season, leading the conference in digs per set with 16.98 pergame.FourGreatDanesfinishedinthetop-16intheconfer-ence in digs per set, led by Viktoriia Stroilo at #1 in the league and 38th in D-I that category with 4.96 per set. Samantha Brostrom,MikalaMcCauleyandLaurenSpreenfinished12th,14th and 16th in the league respectively with 2.88, 2.84 and 2.73 digs per game respectively.

STROILO’S QUEST FOR 1000 DIGSTwo-time America East Defensive Player of the Year Viktoriia Stroilo has 979 digs, is just 21 digs away from earning 1,000 in her career. She earned 560 digs as a sophomore and 367 in her junior year, currently standing with 52 this season.

Nine UAlbany players have earned over 1000 digs in their career, including six in the DI era, led by Laurie Gonzalez, who earned 2,044 from 2008-11. Currently, Stroilo is 11th all-time in digs in UAlbany history. She needs 65 digs to match Alissa Gibbs’s mark of 992 from 1999-2002.

2014 ALBANY GREAT DANES VOLLEYBALLSCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:Boston College hosted a home invitational last weekend, going 2-1 including wins over Holy Cross and Hartford. Junior outside hitter Katty Workman is hitting .250 with a team-best 52 kills and four aces, adding 31 digs. Sophomore Anna Skold is the main player in the middle, standing with a .342 hitting percent-age, 13 blocks and 15 kills, while senior Kellie Barnum sets with 87 assists and 20 digs.

ReigningIvyLeaguechampionYalewillplayitsfirstmatchesthisweekend after a 20-5 campaign last year. The team’s leading offensive player, senior outside hitter Mollie Rogers, leads the team after earning 266 kills and 21 aces. Junior setter Kelly Johnson was a threat all-around last year, tallying 258 kills, 239 assists, 26 aces, 210 digs and 60 total blocks. Rogers and Johnson were First Team All-Ivy last season.

2013 NCAA Regional participant Minnesota is 1-1 to start the season, splitting the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at home. Sopho-more outside hitter Sarah Wilhite is hitting .274 with 31 kills and 23 digs. Junior outside hitter Daly Santana, a 2012 All-Fresh-man Big Ten player, is second in kills with 29, adding four aces and 18 digs. Sophomore Katie Schau is the setter, standing with 81 assists and four aces.

LAST TIME IN NEW HAVEN:UAlbanyreturnstoNewHavenforthefirsttimesince2004,when the Great Danes were competing in the NCAA Tournament. UAlbanytookonYaleinthefirstround,fallinginfoursets(28-30, 21-30, 33-31, 22-30) to the Bulldogs. Shelby Goldman led UAlbany with 18 kills, while Ashley DeNeal had a team-high 24 digs and Blair Buchanan had 51 assists.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’Three players have come across the country from the Golden State to suit up for the Purple and Gold. Two California players lockdownthemiddle,withseniorSofiaFurlongandjuniorteamcaptain Tatum Jungsten, while freshman Emily Lopes plays as a setter.

GLOBETROTTING DANESUAlbany sports four players from outside the United States from three different continents. Viktoriia Stroilo, a native of Ukraine, and Lara Temel, a newcomer from Turkey, hail from Europe. From New Zealand on the continent of Australia is Amy Hunter, and from St. Lucia in the North American Caribbean is Tyna Wil-liam.

STROILO EARNS SUNY CHANCELLOR’S AWARDViktoriia Stroilo, the 2013 America East Volleyball Scholar-Ath-lete, received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Division I volley-ball, recognizing the top student-athletes for each sport in the State University of New York system. Stroilo has a 3.74 cumula-tive GPA in biology.

MJ Engstrom enters her seventh season as head volleyball coach at the University at Albany in 2014.

Engstrom has posted an overall record of 111-70 and 62-10 in America East playoverherfirstsixseasons.Herrecordincludes three America East titles and as many NCAA appearances as a head coach. She previously coached Villanova and Nicholls State to NCAA tournament berths.

In2013,UAlbanyfinishedtiedforsecondplace in the America East regular season with a team of eight freshmen and just three upperclassmen, going 9-5 in conference play and 9-19 overall. For the sixth season in a row, a Great Dane earned AE Defensive Player of the Year, with Viktoriia Stroilo lead-ing the league in digs per set in conference matches. Amanda Dolan earned AE Rookie of the Year. Samantha Brostrom was placed on the All-Conference First Team, with Dolan and Stroilo going on the Second Team.

Engstrom, a native of St. Paul, Minn., is on the editorial board for the International Journal for Volleyball Research and is a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission. She was a student-athlete at the University of Minnesota and received a degree in psychology in 2000.

ENGSTROM APPROACHING TOP DI MARK AT UALBANYAt the helm of UAlbany, MJ Engstrom has amassed 111 victo-ries,winningtheAmericaEastregularseasonfivetimesandtak-ing the title three times. She has been named the America East Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. She is just 31 matches awayfromtyingKellySheffield,whohas142winsatUAlbany,for most DI wins at the school. In her coaching career, Engstrom has taken three different schools, UAlbany, Nicholls State and Villanova, to the NCAA Tournament.

SAREEA FREEMAN JOINS UALBANY COACHING STAFFFormer AVCA All-American and professional volleyball player Sareea Freeman joins the UAlbany volleyball team for the 2014 season as an assistant coach. A former volleyball and basket-ball standout at Florida State, Freeman played for the Vasas Vol-leyball Professional Sports Club in Hungary. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker led Florida State to the NCAA Second Round in all four seasons from 2009-12, including a Final Four appearance in 2011.

ShejoinsBrookeStanley,thefirstassistantinhersecondsea-son , and Traci Vandegrift, back for her second season as the graduate assistant manager.

ALISSA GIBBS INDUCTED IN UALBANY HALL OF FAMEOne of the top players around the turn of the century, Alissa Gibbs was inducted into the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2013. She currently ranks third all-time in UAlbany volleyball history with 1,376 kills. She also stands fifthall-timewith166serviceaces,sixthwith3.72killspersetand 10th with 992 digs. A two-time All-conference player, Gibbs was the 2002-03 America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received the ECAC Merit Medal for being UAlbany’s top female student-athlete in 2003.

2013 IN REVIEWAfter a tough start in non-conference play, UAlbany rallied in AmericaEastcompetition.TheGreatDanesheldfirstplaceinthemiddleofconferenceplay,finishing9-5totieforsecondplace in the league and earn a berth in the America East Tourna-ment.UAlbanyfellinthesemifinalstoUMBC,endingtheseasonat 9-19 overall. Viktoriia Stroilo earned America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, while Amanda Dolan was named America East Rookie of the Year. Samantha Brostrom got First Team All-Conference, while Dolan and Stroilo got Second Team. Mikala McCauley was selected to the All-Rookie Team along with Dolan.
