A Message of Encouragement from Father Paul

“The Harvest is Abundant, but the laborers are few…” (Mt. 9:37)

My dear friends at SEAS,

I pray that you are in good health and spiritual strength as individuals as well as inseparable parts of the Body of Christ here at SEAS. I am sad to announce that the church building is closed again! We may attend the Holy Mass on-line again! But I am confident that the Love of God and the Living Body of Christ are always OPEN to us and to one another! In this past two weekends, we hear Jesus teach us about the Kingdom of God, and particularly, its manifestation in our world today. He is affirming us that, as baptized Christians, we belong to the Kingdom of God. Gifted with the Holy Spirit, we are part of God’s Abundant Harvest. Nourished by his Word and Sacraments, we are called to be patient, joyful, and active members of His Kingdom. In time of pandemic and uncertainty, many people are facing difficulties and challenges in their lives. We may hear so many opposing voices from politicians, social activists, and news media. Sometimes, we don’t know what to believe anymore. Many may have lost their faith; many others may feel very shaken and doubtful; Yet Jesus constantly calls each one of us toward His light, His life, and His mission. Our true faith -- and the faith of the whole world -- is being put to the test everyday. We pray that the Lord Jesus continues to guide us with His wisdom and His love, so that we may stay ever more vigilant, and focused on His word, His voice, His call for each one of us these days.

Patience. The parable of the Sower is a vivid image of God’s Word being put, or sown, into our minds and hearts. Like the Sower, or those working in the field, we learn the long process of preparing the soil, and providing a perfect condition for the seed to enter. Like the seed that takes time to grow, we cannot expect the results right away. During lengthened stay-at-home periods, perhaps the virtue of PATIENCE is so crucial for us. We learn to slow down; we learn to work/study from home; we learn to take care of our good health; we learn to watch out for our own safety as well as those around us, and to pay more attention to those less fortunate than us. Perhaps we are also invited to simplify our lives, to have more quiet time, to pray more, especially to meditate on the word of God more carefully, and to discern his will for us and for the world. The fruitful harvest will come in time. Our best option now is to prepare well for it. Therefore, during this time we may learn to be monastics and contemplatives at home. So stay put and pray, pray, pray more!

Joy. As Christians, like the rest of the world, we are not exempt from COVID-19 or other problems like unemployment, racism, social unrest, injustice, violence, and chaos. The question is how we view and interpret them. We may be tempted to distract ourselves from current problems, and in the process, create greater problems. We cannot immerse ourselves in perpetual sadness or negativity. Nonetheless, we can see things either with the way of the world or with the way of God. Hopefully, the fruits of prayer and reflection on God’s word will bring us some quiet but still profound joy, even in small things. We pray for the sick, but if we still have good health, give thanks. Every good breath is a blessing now; every good bite of the food we eat is a blessing; we pay more attention to the way we walk, the way we treat others, the way we connect with our family and loved ones; we are glad that we have each other and can take care of each other. We rejoice that Jesus is still in our hearts and in our homes no matter what. And He wants us to grow strong in our faith, hope, and love.

Journey together. No one is an island. Please know that I am praying for each one of you as we face trials and tribulations together. I encourage each of us to connect to each other and support each other. If you are alone and need a spiritual companion, please reach out to us. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Paul Trinh

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul at SEAS

SVDP HOME VISIT PROCESS AND CLIENTS Under the leadership of SVDP at SEAS founder, Rich Martel, all Home Visit team members undergo Home Visit Training. The three hour training consists of videos, discussions, guidelines and Home Visit Role Playing Simulations. Trainees accompany experienced Home Visit teams until the trainee feels ready to conduct a home visit with another team member as their own team. The Keystone of SVDP is personal service to the needy in their homes. The Home Visit teams visit not as paid social workers, but as brothers and sisters, as neighbors, as friends, as representative of Christ’s love. Vincentians may be transformed by the experience and touched by God’s grace. The financial assistance offered by SVDP at SEAS consists of rental assistance, utilities assistance or addition to the Food Delivery Program. SVDP serves anyone in need regardless of faith or nationality. At the beginning and end of each home visit, we ask if we can say a short prayer with them to give thanks to God for the blessings they do have.

Process Before Pandemic At SEAS there is a hotline for phone calls from those in need. There are four Home Visit Teams. Each week a different Home Visit Team responds to the phone calls, schedules a home visit, conducts the home visit, completes the Client Profile for each client, submits the request to the Officers for a vote and relays the result of the vote to the Client. The Treasurer will prepare a check to mail to the landlord or utility company. Nearly 800 families have been helped through the Home Visit program.

SVDP at SEAS Clients Most of the SVDP at SEAS clients are single mothers with children, although there may be couples with children, also. Many are new arrivals to the U.S. For example, a young couple in their 30s came to the U.S. on political asylum from Bangladesh based on religious persecution. The husband now works full-time at a pharmacy and part-time at Walmart. His wife stays home with their 8 year old son and 18 month old daughter. When their daughter reaches school age, his wife plans to go back to work. Without a car, he rides a bike to work. Another example is a divorced mother with an 11 year old son. She is currently employed by Comfort Keepers at a low wage. She requested rental assistance. Although she had a court order for spousal support, the ex-husband refused to pay it. A third example is a single mother with three young children. She works in a memory care facility. She is also taking a course in cybersecurity which would pay better than her current position. She requested rental assistance.

Process During Pandemic Although no Home Visits are conducted at this time because of potential exposure to Covid19, Home Visit teams respond to the SVDP hotline, provide resources over the phone, and in the case of requests for food, will mail food cards to the Client. If a family is on the Food Delivery Program, they may request assistance with utility bills. Because I am able to put my faith into action by assisting families in need, my faith is strengthened through SVDP. The SVDP provides shared values, fellowship and affirmation of our faith with other Vincentians as we assist families and give them hope. All of the SVDP at SEAS Clients are grateful for the personal attention of the home visit, the prayers at the home visit, and the financial assistance provided, as well as the Food Delivery Program. If you would like to know more about the SVDP Home Visit program, please contact our Home Visit Chairman, Rich Martel, [email protected]
