Student Leadership in the Sixth FormIn the Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to take on a range of leadership roles and responsibilities within the school as part of the Head Student and/or Senior Leader Teams. Both roles involve working closely with the staff Senior Leadership Team, Head of Sixth Form and Sixth Form PL’s in the planning, organising and managing of whole school and Sixth Form events. As well as representing the views, interests and aspirations of the student body, they have the opportunity to support younger students. The Head Student Team supports with the running of the School Council with representatives from every year group. In addition, the whole Sixth Form contributes greatly to the smooth running of the school, running clubs and societies and helping with Music, Drama, Sports and charitable events. This is valued enormously by the school community.

We are pleased to announce the commencement of the selection process for the new Student Leadership Team, comprising Senior Leaders and Head Students. All Year 12 students are welcome to apply and those interested in the role should see Mr Singh for details of the job description. Students should submit their application on one side of A4, demonstrating their interest and suitability for the role, and ideas they may have for the role. Applications should be emailed to [email protected] by 9am on the 6th December 2018. Interviews will be held on the 14th December, with roles being confirmed by the 17th December 2018.

I look forward to providing updates in a few weeks’ time.

Mr Singh

At Isaac Newton Academy we like to ensure we celebrate the festive season in good spirit.

On Friday 14th December we will be having our traditional Christmas lunch for all staff and students.

We invite all students to join in the festive spirit by wearing a Christmas jumper or suitably festive colours on that day.

Please note all students will still need to be wearing their lanyards.

There is a suggested donation of £1 which will be made into the buckets at the school gates. The donations will support the school’s charitable endeavours and support events which en-rich our school’s curriculum.

I thank you for all your support and look forward to welcoming students in a suitably festive fashion on this day.

Mr A. Clift-Matthews, Assistant Principal

Student Finance Talk: 4th December 2018On Tuesday evening, we welcomed Kat Knight from City University to present a session on student finance for our sixth form students and their parents. From the opening reassurance that the student loan has no impact on either the student’s or the parents’ credit rating, through to Kat’s personal tips about dealing with student finance, it was a very informative, useful and interesting presentation.

Kat has kindly left us a copy of her presentation which can be found here S:\Ms Joy\info for students\Student Finance for parents - 2019 entry.pptx

She also highly recommended Martin Lewis’s website, which has many useful tips for students around this whole topic https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/

We look forward to welcoming Kat back to INA again next year and thank her, and City University, for providing us with such helpful information.

Crisis Scenario WorkshopsAs part of the Ministry of Defence Schools Outreach Workshops, a group of us from Year 12 last year took part in three sessions in the school which were run by two members of the MoD. During these sessions, we developed our skills in public speaking (where we

presented our ideas on crisis management as a group to the whole class) , grid referencing and map reading, as well as planning, organising and teamwork through miniature ‘International Crisis roleplays’; all of these skills are used by members of MoD who help deal with international crises on a regular basis and so were important for us to develop so that we could better understand the very important job which is performed on a day to day basis by MoD employees.

After taking part in the three sessions in the school, we were then given the opportunity to go to the MoD HQ in Whitehall in order to take part in an MoD International Crisis Roleplay Workshop. During this day, we got a tour of the building – including Henry VIII’s Wine Cellar – and the offices and conference rooms. We were then taken to a conference room where we were given a case file, along with titles – we became the PM, Secretary of Defence, Secretary of International Development, members of the Foreign office, and the Home Secretary. Using the case files and our titles, we had to work together, using the skills that we had developed in the school sessions, in order to present a press conference to show how we would tackle an international crisis. This activity put into perspective how difficult it actually is for governments to deal with international crises without overstepping their boundaries or making situations worse when they think that they are actually doing the right thing.

The Programme is delivered by Andy Gillman MBE, a Defence Civil Servant of over 40 years’ Service with involvement in both the Falklands and Kosovo operations, and who before building the MOD Programme spent a year as an MOD liaison officer in No 10 Downing Street after 9/11 and often assisted at Ministerial Press Conferences in the real world.

Andy says of the programme, ‘The crisis scenario workshop enables those who take part to participate in a simulated cross governmental response to a fast-moving deteriorating situation the other side of the world. The scenario is extremely realistic and many of those taking part bring their own knowledge into their teams. The awarding of the winning team certificates plus a few commendation ones to the participants is a wonderful moment to witness when often there are nerves at the start but all are hugely proud at the end of what they have achieved’.

Overall, the workshop and the sessions in school were really fun as they pushed us out of our comfort zones and got us thinking about the possibilities of working for the MoD or other intelligence agencies in our futures, as, although it would be slightly stressful, it would be extremely fun and rewarding!

A big thank you to Mr Thomas for kindly accompanying the group to Whitehall and fielding questions for which he was not really prepared! – Toby Summers

Beauty in science is more than just the occasional micrograph ‘looking good’: it is a driving force in formulating theories. Beauty and simplicity are related. The simplest solution to a problem often turns out to be the correct one.

Microscopes and telescopes have extended the range of human enjoyment of beauty in nature. Optics offers many delights of colour, computer graphicsis creating a renaissance in spatial representation and fractals are a beautiful application of complex numbers.
