WELCOME TO SIXTH FORM

AT ST PETER AND ST PAUL

CATHOLIC VOLUNTARY ACADEMY

A Message From Mr Woodgate (Sixth Form Leader)

We would like to welcome you to St Peter and St Paul Catholic Sixth Form. Our Sixth Form is an exciting and challenging place to be – a place where students develop academically, pastorally, spiritually and where we provide enrichment for the needs of all our students. The atmosphere is calm and friendly and the emphasis on achieving the high expectations that the school has of its students. The staff work closely with the students to help guide them through all aspects of their time here. Lessons are dynamic, with students actively participating and enjoying the learning ethos created. The school provides a good working environment with students making good use of the independent study lessons, which are vital to the final grades that our students attain. Our Sixth Form is somewhere students can prepare for the next stage of their lives. We strongly believe that attaining the highest results that students can from their carefully selected courses will enable them to be in the best possible position of choice when they come to leave us. The life of the Sixth Form is about preparing all of our students for the outside world and equipping them with the skills, qualifications and attitude needed to be successful. In this sense, motivation from all those associated with the Sixth Form is key. Mr R. Woodgate (Sixth Form Leader)

“I have come that they may have life and have it to the full”

(John 10:10)

Achievement Our Sixth Form is an inclusive Sixth Form and, as such, offers a broad range of courses which enables students to choose subjects and assessment styles that suit their individual needs. We measure achievement at an individual level and value the successes of all our students. Examination results are one of the key measures of our achievement and indicate the individual successes of our students. Our Sixth Form has an excellent record and in August 2018 our Sixth Form students achieved a 98% Pass rate in either A Level or Vocational Qualifications. Our Year 13 students go on to study further at some of the best universities in the country. In 2018, all those who wanted to continue on to university secured places, with one going on to study at Oxford University. Likewise, we are proud that all of our students move on to either Higher Education, employment or apprenticeships once they finish their studies at St Peter and St Paul. It is a constant joy to hear of the success of our students and to share with them the benefits of having joined our Sixth Form. We know we are working with individuals and we consider you to be young adults, and that the future you will move into is exciting and very much your own. However, we believe there are things which will stay with you as a former student of St Peter and St Paul; we hope that you will move on from here as a compassionate, independent, well-educated, self-critical, fully rounded, socially aware, and ultimately happy person! Throughout your time here you are making memories which you will reflect upon throughout your life.

Monitoring Progress / Reporting Progress We believe that success is achieved by maintaining a link between student, parent and academy. At three points in the year, each student will receive a progress report outlining their target grades, current performance and commitment for each subject. In addition a full subject report will be given during the year. A Sixth Form Parents’ evening also takes place part way through the year to discuss progress and commitment.

“‘Sixth Form is a place where becoming an adult begins. Ambitions are turned into reality through motivation and resilience, guided by a hugely diligent and passionate staff team who are committed to carving the right pathway for each individual student. You are not just a statistic in this Sixth Form ”

(Head Boy)

Independent Learning All students have time within the academy day to undertake their own research and further their own learning. Recognising the importance, but also the difficulties, of becoming an effective independent learner, we don’t just leave students to it. Each student will have study periods on their timetable, the majority of these are supervised. It is expected that this time is used wisely to carry out further research and independent study. The Sixth Form Study Area has a designated room for quiet working.

Typically, we would expect students to carry out 4 or 5 hours independent study per subject per week. Therefore students should use their time wisely. It is essential to start a regular routine of independent work, as often too little can lead to serious underachievement and this can often be very difficult to repair.

Importance of Attendance We expect all students in Year 12 to attend the academy from 8.40 am - 3.15 pm. If they leave for any reason, at any time of the day they must sign in and out. Medical appointments and driving lessons should be arranged for outside academy hours.

Sixth Form Personal Development At St Peter and St Paul’s Sixth Form we aim to develop the whole student and give them the tools with which they can deal with life’s challenges whilst maintaining respect for themselves and for others around them. We also want students to be leaders within the academy and have recently introduced Head Boy and Girl positions as well as deputies. These positions allow students to help offer a vision for the development of the academy and it’s Sixth Form

In order to help our students develop in other areas of life, all Sixth Formers have two ‘Enrichment’ lessons on their timetable. This time has been allocated for students to organise, lead and participate in an activity that will help them develop skills that they will benefit from. Enrichment activities that have taken place this year are: UCAS applications; Apprenticeship fairs; Visits to the gym; Work experience; Book club; Classroom Assistants in KS3 / 4 lessons; UCAS application help from university guest speakers and university sample lectures.

During the year there are a number of Aspire Days organised for Sixth Form which will help the students build confidence and broaden their experiences. The course is designed to help prepare them for life after St Peter and St Paul Academy, be it university, employment, apprenticeship or other.

Through Careers Guidance students are actively encouraged, from the start, to research and develop their knowledge of Higher Education courses available as well as the opportunities for GAP year, work experience and apprenticeships. There is considerable help and advice given on applying to university, via UCAS, with excellent support for those students wishing to aspire to Oxford or Cambridge Universities. The school works very closely with local universities. In addition Students are prepared for the financial responsibilities they will encounter in the world of work, as well as applying for student loans.

“‘Sixth form has taught me how to learn independently, it is a friendly and welcoming place to study. It has helped prepare me for the next step in my life thanks to knowledgeable and caring

staff” .’ (Head Girl)

Curriculum All young people have to stay in education until the age of 18 and students that choose to join the Sixth Form at St Peter and St Paul Catholic Voluntary Academy will follow one of the 5 programmes of study.

AS / A2: Please be aware that AS qualifications have now been ‘decoupled’ from the A2 qualification. This means that the AS examination(s) you take at the end of Year 12 will result in a qualification in it’s own right. If you continue studying a subject into Year 13 you must be aware that the AS qualification you gained in Year 12 will NOT contribute to your final grade and you will have to sit this examination again in Year 13 as well as sitting your A2 examinations. This is something your teacher will discuss with you at the start of your course. Level 3 BTEC: All Level 3 BTEC courses offered at our Sixth Form now contain external examination components. Please speak to the Subject Leaders about the weighting of these components. St Peter & St Paul offers a broad range of academic and vocational courses (AS / A2; BTEC; OCR Cambridge Technicals; Construction Level 2).Some of our courses are offered in partnership with Branston Community Academy. Any student who has not achieved a Grade 4 in English and Maths will be expected to follow a course in order to re-sit these examinations. All students in our Sixth Form will continue to study a Religious Education course (for 1 lesson a week) that could lead to earning additional UCAS points.
