Message from the

The SJCSAA embarked on many firsts this 2014-2015 and we wish to thank you all for your participation and support in our alumni activities.

We witnessed a historic turnout during the elections last October 2013 which signaled a renewed level of engagement within our organization. It was the first step in an exciting journey for all of us together.

Since then, we have conducted different programs and activities from seminars, sports events and networking activities to develop our alumni and foster camaraderie.

Held for the first time, our Summer Internship Program brought the opportunity for our young alumni to gain experience in a working environment. We also brought young people in the Filipino-Chinese community together through the Meet & Eat Networking Event.

The St. Jude Golf Classic, now on its 13th year, was one of the biggest fund raising events in our history with record sponsorships and player attendance.

This was followed by the 2015 FEDRUN, a fun run hosted by SJCS in cooperation with the Federation of Filipino Chinese Alumni Association, with 8,000 runners participating at the MOA grounds.

We also formally launched the Judenite Endowment Fund that hopes to encourage a tradition of giving to our Alma Mater by institutionalizing the way we raise and distribute funds. We began with a goal of raising P5MM and we are now over P10MM.

This year also marks the first time that the alumni association awarded ten scholarships to High School Students of SJCS and we will be selecting two alumni as recipients of our college scholarship.

Wish Ko Lang was also launched as our way of saying thank you to the teachers and school personnel who have taken good care of us and the Saint Jude students.

This is only the start and we hope to reach out and share our blessings to our SJCS Community.

All these projects were made possible only by alumni volunteers and donors who gave generously of their time, talents and resources to help build our Judenite Community.

We have made gains yet there is still much to be done. These last two years have shown the ability of Judenites to unite, to lead, and to serve, in order to reach our common goals.

We invite everyone – let’s connect, join and give – towards building A Judenite Community Inside and Out.

Alumni Night at Resorts World

2 0 1 4 – 2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T 6

Celebrations for SJCS 50th year culminated in a two night event at the Newport Theatre in Resorts World Manila last January 25 & 26, 2015. Entitled “I Have A Dream”, the well-attended musical production featured the talents of students, parents and alumni of Saint Jude Catholic School.

Over 500 alumni of SJCS gathered on the second evening for the Alumni Night. It was an evening of camaraderie as we journeyed down the memory lane of how Rev. Fr. Peter Yang, Msgr. Charles Tchou, and Msgr. Peter Tsao built a great institution from a small school in San Miguel, Manila.

Rev. Fr. Vicente Rayco, S.V.D.,

School Director

SJCS also recognized its Judenite Pride Awardees after a careful screening process of outstanding alumni who have contributed to the good name of SJCS through significant contributions to Saint Jude Catholic School or to the society by his/her life, actions and achievements. Just as our patron saint, Saint Jude Thaddeus, is the Patron of Hopeless Cases, the awardee must have served as a channel of hope for others. 20 alumni received the Judenite Pride award for bringing pride and honor to the school.

The evening also marked the induction of the Board of Trustees of the SJCS Alumni Association by Bishop Paul Jaucian, the launch of the Alumni Card and the debut of the 62-member alumni choir with a medley of Filipino, English and Chinese songs.

SJCSAA marked its first successful fundraising event for the year with the Golden Anniversary Golf Tournament held last May 2, 2014 at the Orchard Golf & Country Club with record funds raised and player attendance. Still exciting and vibrant on its 13thyear, the Saint Jude Golf Classic welcomed 105 alumni and guests golfers to a day of golf. Sports Committee Chairman Giovanni Co ‘88 and Golf Committee Chairman Charles Kohchet-Chua ‘80 welcomed the registrants as early as 5:30 am. It was a day of celebrating fun, camaraderie and goodwill among alumni golfers and friends.

The tournament officially started at 8:00am after the ceremonial tee-off by SJCSAA President Liza Yao ‘91, Board Member Grant Cheng ‘99, and St. Jude Golf Classic Co-Chairman Gerry Lim Bon Hiong ‘77. The luncheon that followed was festive with all the golfers in a happy mood after a round of golf with friends amid the summer heat. Members and guests cheered as major and minor raffle prizes were awarded. Practically everyone went home with prizes. Guest Ken Chen won the 40” Samsung TV and Dr. Jerry Ngu ’82 won the iPad mini.

Marvin Caparros and Jeff Bernaldez were the Lowest Net and Lowest Gross champions respectively. Biggest cheers went to Batch ’83 as the Overall Batch Champion of this year’s Saint Jude Golf Classic. Coming in their matching Tanduay Fiery Red uniforms, Batch ’83 golfers led by Bong Tan, Cons Kohchet-Chua, Wilbert Tan, Peter Sy, Cary Tuisieng, Bobby Lua, and Nelson Chung, continued their winning streak as 4-peat champions with an aggregate net score of 284. And promising to put up a better fight next year, Batch ’97 finished closely behind with an aggregate net score of 304.

Special Awards were given to Jerboa Go ’02 for the longest drive of 310 yards, Adones Baluyot for the most accurate drive with 1” to the line, and Elmer Ngo ‘89 for nearest to the pin at 4’8” to the pin.

COL Chairman and Founder Edward Lee was the guest speaker at the Stock Investing Seminar last July 19, 2014. “Building Wealth Through Stock Investing” is the first in a series of seminar organized by the SJCS Alumni Association. Joining him that day were David Chua ’85, Director of the Philippine Stock Exchange, who gave an overview of the PSE and its products and Juanis Barredo, VP COL Financial Group who walked the audience through the basics of stock market investing and how returns can be made in the growing Philippine economy.

It was a well-attended event by more than 200 alumni, parents and guests who were interested to invest and achieve returns in the stock market.

As generations of alumni reflect on the excellence and value of their Judenite education, we hope future generations will continue to enjoy the benefits of an education from a premier Filipino-Chinese Catholic institution.

Rev. Fr. Peter Yang, Msgr. Peter Tsao, Msgr. Charles Tchou began with a dream to educate the Filipino –Chinese children. With this dream in their hearts, they went through the challenges that come with building a great institution. They were fearless, hardworking and determined. Help came from individuals and families who believed in the same purpose.
