TEAM VICAR’S LETTER
All God’s Children ‘And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.’ (Mark 10.16)
The words above describe Jesus’ reaction to little children being brought to him. His disciples, in line
with the cultural understanding of the day that children were insignificant members of society, had
shooed them away. Jesus goes out of his way not only to acknowledge them but to pick them up in his
arms and to bless them. In so doing he demonstrates something of the wide inclusivity and generosity of
God’s love.
July brings with it the end of another year in the life of our schools. It is a time for children, teachers and
parents to reflect on what has been achieved and to look forward to what comes next. For those children
in year 6 in our primary schools this July marks the beginning of a big change as they move into the new
world of secondary education. There are all sorts of ways in which this change will be marked including
the popular autographing of school shirts on the last day! At end of term services in our churches we
shall mark the transition too using prayers of blessing. In some of them we shall use a reciprocal blessing
where the children leaving stand at the front and are blessed by the whole school, and then the leavers
themselves say words of blessing for the rest of the school. It is a moving act, not least for me this year as
my younger child moves on from primary school, but moving because the children themselves ask for
God’s blessing on their peers. They are very much part of God’s family.
The Church of England has been in the headlines recently as many will be aware, giving a response to the
Government’s consultation on ‘Equal Civil Marriage’. In July the General Synod meets again and there
will almost certainly be media coverage of decisions taken or not taken in the whole debate about women
bishops. The ‘soundbite’ culture in which we live seeks to summarise complex debates such as these in
simple phrases, which means that much of the nuance of argument can be lost. The danger of this
simplification is not only that the full complexity is never understood by anyone outside the debating
chamber but that people in certain groups or with certain views can feel judged, shut out and unwelcome
in church life. No one should feel excluded from our church families because as Christians, first and
foremost, we are cherished children of God. It may help us, whatever the headlines say this month, to
remember the image of Jesus taking up children in his arms and blessing them, to know ourselves and
those around us held in the arms and the gaze of God, and to act boldly in offering our blessings in God’s
name to all, just as those children in our schools will do for each other before they continue their journeys
into the future.
With every blessing to you all. Emma Davies

LUNCHEON CLUB On Thursday 14th June again a depleted number of us gathered for lunch in the Village Hall. Eileen Burd
treated us to a Cordon Bleu main course of Crispy Chicken with New Potatoes and Tomatoes served with
Rocket Salad and Coleslaw. To follow Louise Boffey provided a tasty Bread and Butter pudding. Tea and
chocolates rounded off a very pleasant meal.
The next meeting will be a Jubilee Strawberry Tea in the Village on Thursday 12th July.

W.I. DIARY OF EVENTS FOR 2012 At WI this month we were joined by members from Lutterworth WI and other visitors for an insight into
the different Asian Cultures in Leicester.
Nila Lodia told us how to recognise where people came from by the different clothes they wore and
which side of their nose was pierced. Entertainment is very important to them - having big colourful
festivals with lots of food music and dancing. Two members were dressed up in different types of saris,
both having 6 yards of material and hand sewn with colourful beads and stitching. We rounded off the
evening sampling some Indian food Nila had brought; Ghatiya (mild), Puri (peppery), Sev (very spicy).
The next meeting is on the 17th July when we have a mater of ceremonies visiting us. Visitors always
welcome.

KILWORTH CHALLENGE 2012 Thanks a Million!!!
We made the million!! The Kilworth Challenge raised 56,896 pounds on the day and when the generous
support from Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre and the `gift aid` is taken into account, this will rise
above 70,000. This takes the grand total raised over the life of the Challenge to in excess of an amazing
1,020,000 pounds.
The 2012 Kilworth Challenge was won by `3 Teachers and a Shelf Stacker` led by previous winner John
Fish whose family lives in North Kilworth. With John were Matt Soulsby, Mark O`Dea and Steve Dean.
Second was a team from the Lutterworth area called `Don’t Look Back` with Tony Brown, Mark English,
Kieth Richmond and Simon Jones. Third was `the Bosworth Boys` from Husbands Bosworth supporting
the Charity HomeStart with Jack Johnston, Patrick O`Neill, Sam Caves and Steve Harwood.
The winning female team was `4Shes to the Wind` comprising Catherine Weston, Lucy Dunkley, Sara
Young and Caroline Du Plessis who also won the fastest female yomper. The fastest male runner was
Michael Burke from North Kilworth in `Lads and Dads`. Mixed team winners were `The Crown Joules`
from Market Harborough with Tom Joule, Simon Dowling, Paul Price and Emma Davies. The over 40s
category was won by a long standing team in the competition, `The Kilworth Lions`, comprising Adam
Herring, John Linnell, Stefan Green and Neil Foster.
The team that raised the greatest amount of sponsorship was again `Running on Carling` with Simon
Jones, Stuart Conopo, Ben Hurst and Jason Wright, all very local to North Kilworth. Their efforts spread
almost over the whole year raised a fantastic 4171 pounds.
Special recognition was made in memory of two individuals from North Kilworth, Claire Squires and
Andrew Emery. The colour for the year was Claire`s favourite red and the female trophy was named after
her as the `Claire Squires Trophy`. The `over 40s` trophy was named after Andrew as the `Andrew Emery
Trophy`. Very fitting tributes to two fine individuals who always competed in the best traditions of the
Challenge.
35 teams tackled 35 challenges in the wet, windy and muddy countryside walking and running over 30
miles in atrocious conditions, especially on the Sunday. Just as in previous years the challenges required
physical strength, mental agility and most importantly team work – some were tough while others were
just plain fun. They featured the obstacle course swinging through the trees, racing in the mud, a scary
roundabout and some word and number puzzles, plus sprinting over a cross country course. The biggest
challenge of course was to see how much funding they could raise.
This bulk of this year`s sponsorship will go to Dukes Barn in Derbyshire, the Leicestershire Club for
Young People, and Over the Wall, three Midland based charities that help disadvantaged and
handicapped children. The remainder will go to local charities and good causes.
We would like to express their appreciation for everyone that helped, especially the Sports Club,
landowners and the Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre. As ever special thanks goes to the marshals and
the competitors themselves who kept smiling through the wet, wind and the rain.
Once again …………….
Thanks a Million!!!
Colin Clark, Paul Whitehead, Mike Lawrence, Bruce Phillips, Nick Otter, Duncan Moss, Mick Faulkner,
Chris Mitchell and Manfred Morris
PS : Don’t forget the Family Challenge set for Saturday 1st September 2012.
FROM THE SCHOOL The Key Stage 2 children enjoyed a residential visit to Swanage where they took part in RNLI life saving
training, body boarding, rode on a steam train and visited Corfe Castle amongst other activities. As
always the children were a pleasure to take away and a credit to their families. If you would like to see
pictures of our activities please visit our website www.southkilworthschool.org.uk
During June we have had a visit from Mrs Katango Chileshe, headteacher at our partner school in
Zambia. The children have enjoyed telling her about their school and lives and finding out about the lives
of children in Zambia.
We enjoyed entertaining some of our older residents during our Jubilee Tea Morning and would like to
thank our visitors for coming.
During June the KS1 children are visiting Woodland Grange Primary School in Oadby to join with them
in a "mini Olympics"
In order to help us with forward planning please contact the school if you have children 2+ years old who
you wish to attend South Kilworth Primary so that we can add them to our waiting list. Also if you know
of any other children who would like a place at our school please ask them to do the same. As from
September 2013 we are able to take 12 children per year group so will have extra spaces available in
several year groups. Currently we have spaces available in Year 1 and Year 6 for September 2012. If any
parents wish to visit the school prior to placing their child's name on our waiting list we will only be too
happy to show you around. Please contact the school office for an appointment.

WASoSKs IN JUNE
June saw 11 of us dining out at “Mac Hinchley’s”, among this group we welcomed a new member John
Keal. We were very well looked after at David’s establishment where the burgers were large and the
whisky was……….but that’s another story.
The library was replenished by a significant collection of new bottles. Interestingly as we work through
the more easily obtainable whiskies these new additions included several rarer cask strength drams, well
it interested us! Of these the “best bottle” award went to A’Bunadh a cask strength offering from the
Aberlour distillery. We also tasted special editions from Bruichladdich a 16year old aged in claret barrels
from Paulliac, as well as special editions from Auchentoshan and the Arran distillery - tasting notes
below
Auchentoshan 13yr old distillery edition: A seasalt with creamtoffee note on the nose led to a light salty
impression leading to a peppery spiciness with a mild bitter finish in the mouth.
Arran Distillery 13 yr old distillery edition: A big rich nose with a strong hint of lemon marmalade on the
nose with a sweet bot not cloying taste with hints of lemon and sugared almonds on the finish.
After supersizing us with his burgers, David then minimized us with his offering of a 16yr old Jura. The
lesson of the week for those who indulge in internet shopping is …….if it looks too good to be true…..it
probably is. A full bottle next time please.
Before I sign off, I have to congratulate the Korks for their now infamous win in the great Tug-o-War
contest at the Jubillee celebrations. We do not even have the excuse of it being the morning after. I’m sure
I speak for the rest of the WASoSKs in admitting that the heavier team won fairly and squarely. In
preparation for next time?!!!! we will have to stick to a supersizing diet if we are going to compete.
Our next meeting is planned for the Friday 6th
July at Matt Rogers

KILWORTH KORKS The Kilworth Korks are now officially one year old and what a year it's been.
The general feedback has been very good with an excellent turnout at the planning meeting in January
with more ideas than months in the year, so let’s hope it’s as good next year.
We have had many varied and interesting meetings Flower reading, Theatre trip, Champagne Tasting and
this month a two and a half hour walk with a very welcome drink and buffet at the end.
This is to name just a few; turnout has been varied but that’s good - nobody must feel that they have to
attend everything, just do what you fancy.
Best turnout was probably for our lovely Christmas do at the Shires.
So it's never too late to come, join and meet new friends from our village!
Special thanks must go to Claire Hubbard for her excellent administration skills and keeping us all up to
date.!

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS The great news this month is that a number of people around the village have contacted me with their own
personal sightings – thanks to all the people that have done this.
Following on from mention of the cuckoo last month, there have been 2 further sightings in the village -
although I have to say that they have now gone quiet, making them more difficult to locate.
spotted flycatcher
Another summer visitor, which has arrived at several
locations, is the spotted flycatcher. It is probably one of
those birds that can go unnoticed (being a little grey /
brown and drab on first look). However, if you can see
them well they are an entertaining bird to watch,
demonstrating great agility as they fly from their
favoured perch, often returning to the exact spot from
where they set off (hopefully with an insect).
I am aware of at least three locations in the village where
spotted flycatchers have been seen - which is fantastic.
Other notable records received are of sparrowhawk, a
family party of great spotted woodpeckers, red kite and
lapwings that have bred (having young birds present).
Finally, the oystercatcher (mentioned last month) has successfully hatched chicks. This is the first known
breeding record of oystercatcher at Stanford Reservoir.

EDITORIAL My thanks to all contributors but especial thanks to Rob Burd for his last minute WASoSK contribution
which meant that I suddenly had a much smaller space to fill. An article which finishes controversially as
well! The defeat at tug-o’-war has obviously rankled if it is not possible to be gracious in defeat even
after a few weeks. As a member of the winning side the event had almost slipped from my memory. I am
not sure that we were the weightier side and think the victory may have been due to superior technique
and a surprise attack.
The Jubilee event at the village hall and playing fields was enjoyable and well supported despite the cool
weather – well done to the organisers. The art display showed that there are some very talented villagers
and school children.
I didn’t get around to trying the Jubilee cocktails so maybe these could be reprised in an Olympic themed
event as TeamGB cocktails ? I wonder if the WASoSK’s had tried them and this affected their
performance ?
I had planned to but didn’t find the time to go around the Open Gardens but heard from those that did that
they were magnificent and the cakes were also worthy of mention. It was rather a busy day and I even
managed to turn up late for the official library opening.
