Youth Sports Leagues & Camps2012 YouTh BaSkeTBall SkIllS CamPSkagit County’s BEST hoops camp! Two age groups to choose from! This basketball skills camp is for boys and girls ages 5 - 13 years old. The camp focuses primarily on the development of proper basketball fundamentals.

From theDirectors ChairDirector Brian Adams, Skagit County Parks and Recreation

Winter in the northwest can be as cold, grey, and harsh as prison yard concrete. From Guemes Island to the far eastern edge of Skagit County, the blanket of the 48th parallel of darkness settles in like a cheap drape in an aging discotheque. By March, most of us who have endured the long winters are ready for the rains to disappear and to have the water wrung from our waterlogged bodies. The spring is often our first opportunity to be rewarded with the solar epidermal vitamin D transfer that comes with the rays of the long awaited sun. Even as harsh as the winters can be, the season brings other flying matter than just the intermittent showers of water. Migratory birds, such as Trumpeter swans and Bald Eagles drop in like long lost gift-bearing relatives at a Christmas party. Fir Island fields become alive with the graceful presence of large seraph white swans. Further east, at Howard Miller Steelhead Park, Bald Eagles fly protectively along the river banks in search of migrating salmon. It wasn’t that long ago the eagle numbers had dwindled down to a hundred breeding pairs. The year I was shedding my high school graduation gown to do my own migration of sorts, the migrating eagle populations in Washington were at an all time low. Fast forward 30 years and we see a

bald eagle population that has made a dramatic comeback. Both residential bald eagles and a very large migrating population push the eagle population to its annual peak during the early winter months. It is estimated that 3500 to 4000 bald eagles will visit their resident eagle cousins in Washington State this year, with a large majority of them making their way to the nutrient rich spawning areas along the Skagit River. Howard Miller Steelhead Park in Rockport, adjacent to the Skagit River is now serving as the winter residence of the Skagit River Bald Eagle Awareness Team. Take a look at their website and make plans for a winter trip up to your beautiful Skagit County park. Take an interpretive hike with Libby Mills or one of the other naturalists that will lead you along the river trails to see the eagles as they perch in the trees and swoop for salmon. Stay at one of our newly constructed camping cabins, complete with cozy heaters. Join the migrating bald eagles and come join us at Howard Miller Steelhead Park this winter. We’ll keep the light on for you.

All revenue raised during our three-week barbecue is used to lend funding to agencies and pro-grams in our community that support and promote the health, safety and growth of children.
