TheSkagitValleyTulipFestivalisoftenheraldedbylocalsastheendofwinter.

“Wecertainlystrikeachordforpeoplewhoarelookingforsomethingtokindofjump-startspring,”saidCindyVerge,executivedirectoroftheSkagitValleyTulipFestival.

Thevibrant,full-figuredtulipbloomsdrawbetween300,000and400,000visi-torstotheSkagitValleyforthemonth-longevent,April1-31,Vergesaid.

WhilethefestivalisheldinApril,bloomdatesdon’toftenconformtothecalendar.TwoyearsagothetulipsbloomedwellintoMay,Vergesaid.Of-ficialsoftencan’tpredicttoofaraheadwhentheflowerswillbloom—italldependson“MotherNature,”shesaid.

Butoncefieldsstartblooming,sodocarloadsofvisitors.

Thelasteconomicstudydonein2000—whentheTulipFestivalwasonly17dayslonginsteadofafullmonth—determinedthatout-of-countyvisi-torsspent$14millionhereduringtheFestival.

Andthere’splentytododuringthe28thannualfestival.

VergeurgedvisitorstocheckoutthedisplaygardensatRoozenGaardeandTulipTown.Eachgrowerwillhavenewtulipvarietiesondisplay.

Thefestivalalsooffersactivitiesshowcasingthearea’sagriculturalroots,shellfishfarming,wineriesandlocallygrownproduce.Businessesacrossthecounty,includingPACCAR,GoldenGlenCreamery,Rosabella’sGardenBakeryandTaylorShellfish,tonameafew,invitevisitorsforaninsideglimpseoftheiroperations.

Visitorswhowanttoviewthetulipfieldsfromadifferentperspectivecanrentabicycleandtravelonroadsnearthecolorfultulipfields;enjoyahelicop-terrideoverthefieldswithSkyFlyn’Helicopteroratourofthetulipfieldsguidedbythearea’sMasterGardeners.

Therearealsoopportunitiestoviewartworkbyareaartistsatsevenvenuesaroundthecounty.Don’tforgettoenjoytheartisticofferingsatthreelocalmuse-ums,includingtheLaConnerQuilt&TextileMuseum;theMuseumofNorth-westArt,withitsexhibitsofuniquelyPacificNorthwestart;andtheSkagitCountyHistoricalMuseum,whereyoucanfindoutmoreaboutthefertileSkagitValleyandthepeoplewholivehere.And

whileyou’reinthearea,checkoutafewotherpointsofinterestalongtheway,includingthehistoricLincolnTheatreindowntownMountVernon;thePadillaBayNationalEstuarineResearchReserveoverlookingPadillaBaywestofMountVernon;andthearea’stwocasinos.

ThepopularChili,Chowdah’andChocolateCookoffisreturningforasec-ondyear,Vergesaid.Proceedsfromtheeventfrom11a.m.to2p.m.Saturday,April23,willbenefitSkagitValleyhighschoolstudents.

Vergesaidpeopleshouldtryheadingtothefieldsduringtheweek,whentraf-ficislight.

“Thereareafternoonswhenyoucangoouttothetulipfieldsandnobody’sthere,andtheyarejustgorgeous,”Vergesaid.“It’sreallyeasytogooutthereandenjoythetulipsforanevening—andwegetsomegorgeouseveningsduringthemonthofApril.”

Vergesaidvisitorstotheareaenjoyingtheflowersshoulddresswarmly.

“There’sabigdifferencebetweenbeingoutintheagriculturalareaintheflatsandbeingatyourhouse,”shesaid.“Itcanbereallychillyoutthere.It’ssoeasytotakeoffacoatoralayerthanitistonothaveit.”

Andifyouwanttofindoutalittlemoreaboutthehistoryoftulipsandag-ricultureinSkagitCountywhileviewingthebeautifulblooms,theWSUMasterGardenersofferguidedtoursofthefields.

SkagitCountySherriff ’sOfficeSgt.JennySheahan-Leesaiddeputieswillbepatrollingtheareatodirecttrafficalongandticketdriverswhoarenotfollowingtrafficandparkingrules.

Sheahan-Leesaiddriverswhoaredistractedbytakingpicturesouttheirwindowswhilemovingwillbeticketedaswellasthosewhoparkontheshouldersoftheroads.

“Wewritethemandpeopleareveryunhappywithus,”shesaid.

Sheahan-Leesaidbothproblemsare

safetyissues.“Parkingontheshoulderinterferes

withthenormalflowoftrafficanditcausesdangersforpedestriansanditob-structsviews,”shesaid.“Mostpeoplethatcometoviewarecomingwithfamilysowecertainlyneedtobeconcernedaboutyoungchildrencomingintheroadway.”

Shesuggestedviewingtulipswherethereisdesignated,organizedparking.Toviewthetulipssafelyandcourteously,organizershaveofferedafewtips:

•Don’tslowdownandstopinthemiddleofa50mphzonewithastringofvehiclesbehindyou.•Keeptheroadsopenforemergencyvehicles.Don’tblocktheroadway.•Parkindesignatedareas,only.•Bicyclistsshouldremembertorideinsinglefileonthefarright-handsideoftheroad.Cyclistswhorideearlyinthemorningshouldkeeptheirvoicesdowntoavoidwakingresidents.•Respectprivateproperty;don’tplayonthefarmequipment.•Cleanupyourgarbage.•Usetheportablerestroomsavailableinparkinglots.•Keepdogsonleashesandyoureyesonchildren.•Don’tpickyourownbouquetsorpullproducefromthefields.•Visitthefieldsduringtheweekdayswhenthere’slesstraffic,orlaterintheafternoonsorearlyevenings.

forgrowingtulips,asMaryStewartBrowndiscoveredin1906.

BrownplantedafewtulipbulbsfromHollandandwatchedthemgrowintobeautifulblooms.

Overtheyears,tulipfarmingalsowouldbloom,somuchthatby1997,farmerswereplanting700acresofbulbs,withavalueof$42million.

BulbswereoncegrowneastofIn-terstate5,includingthefarmlandnowcoveredwithshoppingmalls.Andastimewenton,bulbfarmersbeganplant-ingdaffodilsandirises,aswell.

Afterherinitialplantings,StewartreceivedmorebulbsandencouragementfromtheUSDAexperimentalstationinBellingham.Sheestablishedamail-orderbusinessandsoldherbulbstogardenclubsinNewEngland.Then20yearslaterin1926,herson,SamStewart,starteduptheTulipGrangeBulbFarmnearLaConner.

Thatsameyear,thefederalgov-ernmentplacedanembargoonbulbimports.Asaresult,manygrowersinHollandbegansendingfamilymemberstotheUnitedStatestoestablishbulbfarms.MostoftheminitiallysettledinWhatcomCounty,butlaterfoundthattheSkagitValleywasmoresuitablefortheirneeds.

ThefederalgovernmentthenliftedthebulbembargoafterWorldWarII,causingAmericanbulbgrowerstofacecompetitionnotonlyfromthetradition-albulb-growingcentersofHollandandEngland,butfromJapan,aswell.

ThatcompetitionputmanyofthesmallfarmsinSkagitValleyoutofbusi-ness.

Despitesomemajorchallenges,the

bulbindustryhascontinuedasahall-markofSkagitCountyagriculture.

Whilethebright,colorfulbloomsattractthetourists,thetulipindustryiscenteredaroundthebulbs.

Thebulbsaremachine-graded,andthelargerbulbsaremarketed.Thebulbsleftforplantingarefromthefarm’sprevi-ousharvests.Someofthestock,however,ispurchasedfromEurope.

PlantingisusuallydoneinSeptemberandOctober.Thenthebulbsarefertil-izedandchemicallytreatedfordiseasecontrol.

Aftertheybloomandbeforethepetalsfalloff,thebloomsareshearedoffbyamechanicaltopper.Theshearinghelpsreducethepotentialofdiseasespreading.

TheflowersarepickedbeginninginlateMarch,buttheexacttimeofthehar-vestdependsontheweatherconditions.Bulbsareleftinthegrounduntilsum-mer,whendiggingandcleaningbegins.

“That’swhatIlikedoingmost.I’mjustfascinatedbythisNorthwestlandscape.Themistandthefog—everythingaboutit,”hesaid.“Landscapesareagoodfitforme.”

TheideaofdesigningtheTulipFestival’sposterdidn’toccurtoEbneruntilhewassolicitedbypassersbyatshowingstwoyearsinarow.

AfterconsultingwiththeTulipFestivalcommittee,hedecidedtocreatehisimagefromadifferentvantagepointthanpreviousfestivalposters.Tryingtogetpeopleandabuildingintheimage,hetookphotosfromtheSnowGooseProduceStandandbeganpainting.

“Iprobablymade10attemptsuntilIfoundoneIwashappywith.Iwouldn’tsayIwasfreakedout,butIfeltafairamountofpressuretoputmybestfootforward,”hesaid.

Theresult?Thebright,colorfulposterforthisyear’sTulipFestival.

“I’mreallyhappy—I’vehadalotpositiveresponses,”Ebnersaid.

It’sbeenalaborofloveforAnacortesartistJenniferBowman,whostartedoneofthemuralssevenyearsagoandhasbeenaddinganotherpaneltoiteveryyear.Themuralnowspansalmost100feetofonewallofthebuildingand50feetofanother.

BowmansaidtheprojectstartedaftershepaintedtheTulipFestivalposterin2004anddiscoveredtheeventwasagoodpromotionalopportunityforherwork.ShestartedoutsellingherartinthebarnattulipgrowersDeGoedes’TulipTown.
