I chose an apprenticeship because I felt it was the best pathway for me to progress within the construction industry and hopefully achieve a degree in the future. JN Bentley is a leading civil engineering and construction company in the UK, directly employing over 1550 people and with an annual turnover in the region of £310 million, generated from projects in both the building and civil engineering markets. As part of the global management, engineering and development consultancy, Mott MacDonald, we offer our clients full feasibility, design and construction services throughout the UK. Apprenticeships at JN Bentley are hands-on from day one; with a dedicated mentor to support your development throughout the course, you’ll have the opportunity to work with site professionals mainly in the office but also on site and develop key skills in civil engineering and quantity surveying. What you’ll do: Quantity Surveyors play an important role in managing the commercial side of construction projects. They look for ways to minimise the total cost of the project to the business and maximise the value received, whilst still meeting the required standards and levels of quality. Our quantity surveyors split their time between working in the office and out on site, preparing payments and cost reports and managing relationships with various stakeholders. You’ll gain experience of working on live construction projects - everything from the construction of new sewage treatment works to the upgrading of existing spillways and reservoirs You will work alongside an experienced Quantity Surveyor learning how to manage all costs relating to projects, working closely with sub-contractor and agreeing and reporting on final accounts on both the financial and contractual status of schemes You’ll be assigned a mentor who will provide on-going support and assist in setting the day to day work Off the job training on either a day release or block basis, which may involve staying away from home Apprenticeship in quantity surveying opens up a number of future career prospects in the construction and civil engineering industry. At JN Bentley we have a strong culture of promoting from within. After completing your initial apprenticeship in there are a number of options you can take as the next steps in your career with us. Want to specialise in quantity surveying? You could go on to study a higher or degree apprenticeship and specialise in the area that you enjoy the most. Thought about becoming a commercial manager? Our dedicated quantity surveying development scheme will equip you with the training and experience you need to become a professional quantity surveyor whilst also working towards Chartership status with the ICES. Location(s): UK-wide Working hours: 37.5hrs per week, general working hours 08:00-17:30 Expected initial apprenticeship duration: 18 months Off the job training will either be on a day or block release basis, which may involve staying away from home Position to ideally start in September 2020 Key info: English and Maths to GCSE Grades A - C or equivalent Valid driving licence: Desirable for any site visits that may need to be carried out Good communication skills Ability to work professionally as part of a team Willingness and flexibility to travel to sites across your operational region Skills/Qualifications: Apprentice Quantity Surveying Technician Apprentice Quantity Surveying Technician Apprentice Quantity Surveying Technician We’re currently offering the opportunity for apprentices to gain valuable experience and develop a number of key skills that will help you to pursue a career in the construction industry.
