Skinny Tire Festival in Moab, UT

On the Way to Moab

My grandparents and I left at 12:00 AM for the event and arrived at 12:00 PM, yes it took 12 hours there where it usually took 6. If the car you were riding in didn't have 4x4 or AWD you wouldn't be making it over the mountains that day. Guess what the event started at 6:00 AM!

There is a Skinny Tire Festival every year that is a big biking event that happens in march in the name of cancer research, hundreds bikers participate every year.

The location of the Skinny Tire Festival in Moab has its pros and cons

pros: amazing plateaus and dazzling views of the Colorado river along with miles and miles of road

cons: literally no reception for most communication devices because of the high plateaus that absorb the low frequency signals providing no communication with cell phones, satellite phones, and most other radio devices. Even ham, otherwise known as amateur radio has a challenge getting through.

How I participated Each year 10 or so ham radio operators come to Moab

from Denver and other parts of Colorado. There are also a few hams in training that come out to help and support the hams. This year I was one of the 2 or 3.

Basically my job was looking for bikers with flat tires, carrying messages between locations (as I said it is sometimes a huge challenge getting through so they had to move the ham radio station away from the location of aid station to get through to net control so I had to run back and forth to deliver messages), and counting bikers to sort out free loaders.

How it has helped the Moab community

As was said earlier this event is all in the name of cancer research tens of thousands of dollars are donated every year they have already added a cancer wing to the local hospital so in a cancer emergency the ambulances on have a 1 hour round trip rather than a 12 hour round trip. Before the hospital wing, most emergencies ended in death.
