1.1 IB PYP CurriculumAll children aged 3 -11 years old follow the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). The programme allows children to learn through the skills and knowledge of traditional subject areas such as Languages, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, the Arts, Personal and Social Education and Information Communication Technology. These subjects are taught through Units of Inquiry that provide opportunities for students to apply skills and knowledge. Classes from Year 1 to Year 6 are actively involved in six units of inquiry per year, each one lasting around six weeks in length. Nursery and Reception experience four units of inquiry throughout the whole year.

1.2 English Language PreparationOur Preparation course for 9, 10 and 11 year olds prepares students for entry into the full curriculum programme. Students study grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing, and develop academic and everyday English. They also study a range of other academic subjects such as Humanities, Science and Mathematics. Children younger than 10 years of age enter the mainstream classroom directly with support provided in class.

Academic Year: 2013/14 Age: 3-11 Years

ICS Primary School is located in central London and has 125 students in classes of 14-18 students. Our school day runs from 08.45-15.25 with a 14.10 finish on Fridays. Students have access to iPads and Kindles, and desktops for desktop publishing and film editing. Students with Special Educational Needs are very well supported. 2.1 IB DiplomaFor students aged 16-18 years, ICS offers the highly regarded IB Diploma programme. This internationally recognised programme comprises a standardised curriculum, moderated coursework and external examinations. IB Diploma courses are at least the equivalent of Advanced Placement courses in the USA and A Levels in the UK. The IB Diploma programme is widely accepted by Universities across the world, including Oxford, Cambridge,Harvard and Princeton.

2.2 IB Middle Years ProgrammeAt our Secondary School campus, students aged 11 -16 years old follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). This is an academically challenging framework, with eight discrete subject areas (English, Modern Languages, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Arts, Technology, and Physical Education) that encourage students to embrace and understand connections between the subject content and the real world, while developing critical and reflective thinking skills. Also running through the programme are three central themes; intercultural awareness, holistic learning and communication.

2.3 English Language PreparationThe preparation programmes serve to enable students to improve their all-round English language skills through a specially designed and unique curriculum that combines English lessons with lessons in other core subjects. In all cases the focus is upon developing fluency in academic English, in order to transition into the IB.

Additional InformationAll our courses combine English classes with sightseeing, cultural visits, physical exercise and social activities appropriate to the age group. Lessons and activities both provide opportunities for learning and English practice in a happy and secure international environment.

English Outdoors gives students opportunities to perform learning tasks and projects under supervision outside the school, such as surveys of shops and local businesses, orienteering and scavenger hunts in Regent’s Park. High ratios of staff supervision on all outside activities means that children are always safe and secure throughout the school day.

In addition to our English language programmes for children, we can provide homestay accommodation, airport transfers and school bus services. Homestays are arranged by partner agencies on behalf of SKOLA English Study Tours. The minimum age for unaccompanied children in homestay is 11 years old. Unaccompanied children younger than 14 years must use the school bus service.

Junior Accommodation

Welfare in London Homestay Accommodation

Parents, children and hosts are provided with 24 hour contact telephone numbers for the accommodation agencies and the schools. Each school has a dedicated staff member to assist you or your child with any problems or questions regarding accommodation. Children are asked regularly during their stay about their accommodation, the food and their happiness with the arrangements. All their feedback is read and followed up if necessary and feedback on hosts is recorded and monitored.

Welfare in Residential Accommodation

24 hour emergency telephone numbers are issued to students and their parents as part of the Information Pack. A member of staff can be contacted at any time should students encounter any problem or difficulty. Medical support is always available, with First Aid trained staff on site. The school procedures – which the students are expected to follow - are explained to the students during the induction session on the first morning. The students and their welfare are our main priority. We maintain very close supervision of students at all times, to ensure their safety and well-being and that they obtain the maximum benefit from their course.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to take out your own travel insurance, but our course prices for juniors do include provision of a Travel, Medical and Course Fees Protection Insurance for students studying at Alexanders College, Camden and summer courses at any of our junior schools.

School Minibus Service

For peace of mind, safety and convenience you can choose the SKOLA school minibus service for your child. You can authorise a child aged 14-17 to travel on public transport, or choose the school bus service. Children under 14 cannot travel alone to school and must use the bus service or come and go with an adult. The bus service is not available for adults. It must be requested and paid for in advance. The bus service aims for a maximum journey time of 45 minutes to or from school. In busy periods this can be up to 60 minutes.

Ascot, Alexanders and Chalfont College Residential Accommodation

At Ascot, Alexanders and Chalfont Colleges, all students are accommodated in school residences on Campus. Boys and girls are in separate residences or on separate floors. During the Academic Year at Alexanders College, students are in rooms with 1-3 beds; during summer courses all bedrooms have 2, 3 or 4 beds. At Ascot College the rooms contain 2-6 beds and the accommodation at Chalfont College is in single rooms. Unless requested otherwise by all parents involved, children sharing together will be of different mother tongues where possible. Most bedrooms contain washbasins, but bathroom and toilet facilities are shared. All accommodation is full-board with breakfast, lunch and evening meal provided and snacks are available.

Accredited by:

We can provide homestay or residential accommodation for children in London and residential accommodation outside London.

LondonResidential Accommodation: Hyde Park

For students studying at Hyde Park there is a small residence available which is located in the Islington area of London only 40 minutes from the school using either the school minibus service or public transport. The Housemaster and residential staff who are living onsite provide 24/7 care and supervision and have had training in First Aid. There are 5 twin en-suite bedrooms for students, broadband wifi throughout, and a TV and DVD room. All meals - and a laundry service – are provided. Activities are arranged in the evenings and at weekends, sometimes in the nearby sports facilities or park.

Homestay Accommodation: Camden, Gloucester Gate & Hyde Park

All our homestay hosts are selected by partner accommodation agencies which are specialised in providing suitable and appropriate accommodation for children. Hosts are chosen only after a strict application process, inspection and police checks. A safe, caring and clean home is more important than a location close to the schools.Generally homes are in London travel zones 2 and 3, with an average journey of 30-45 minutes to school on public transport, which can be up to 60 minutes in busy periods.

Hosts are British citizens who speak English in the home. Hosts can be born in any country or be of any ethnic origin. Junior homestay accommodation includes breakfast and evening meal every day and lunch or packed lunch at weekends. Weekday lunches are included in course fees and provided at school.

Parent and Child Homestay Accommodation

Parents are responsible for their own children outside school hours and in the accommodation. This means the parent is also responsible for the child travelling to and from school and when they arrive home from school. If the child is on the school bus the parent must be at home to greet them in the afternoon. Parent and child homestay includes breakfast and evening meal every day. Weekend lunch is not included. Homes are normally in London travel zones 2-3 but can also be in zone 4 from June to August.

Adult AccommodationThere is a choice of accommodation available in both London and Exeter.

LondonAll our homestay/private home options have been selected by our homestay provider after inspection and chosen for the warmth of their welcome rather than their proximity to the schools. They are situated in residential areas of London from where the journey to school by public transport is straightforward. They reflect the multicultural aspect of Britain in general and London in particular. Although they can come from any number of ethnic backgrounds, English is the main language in the home. It is essential that you inform us of any special requests for your homestay (allergies, diet, pets, location) at the time of booking and we will do our best to match your requirements.

A choice of accommodation for adults is available as follows:

Standard (Homestay, private home and self catering)

Situated in a suburban location in Zone 4, within walking distance of a bus stop or train/underground station.

Superior (Homestay, private home and self catering)

Located in Zones 2 or 3 closer to the city centre, within walking distance of a bus stop or train/underground station.

Accredited by:

A. Private Home

Students who choose Private Home accommodation are provided with bed and breakfast. They are accommodated in homestay accommodation, but there is not much contact with the hosts. There can be up to 4 students staying in the house at the same time - but of different mothertongues (unless a specific request is made to the contrary).

B. Homestay Accommodation

Students in homestay accommodation have an evening meal in addition to Bed and Breakfast. As the evening meal is taken with the hosts, there is more contact - so more opportunity to practise their English. For this type of accommodation there may be up to 3 students at the same time - again of different mother-tongues unless a specific request is made to the contrary.

C. Self-catering

Students will be staying in homestay accommodation but will be able to cook their own food in the kitchen. They will be able to use all the kitchen equipment (pots, pans, cooker, etc.). There may be up to 4 students staying in the house at the same time - but of different mothertongues (unless a specific request is made to the contrary).

D. Parent and child accommodation

We can provide homestay accommodation for parents and children, but would point out that the parent is responsible for looking after the child outside school hours. The parent should either take the child to and from school, or be present in the house when the child leaves and returns on the minibus (if booked). The timetables in the adult and junior schools have been designed with this in mind.

We are also able to arrange Flat Share, Hostels and Residential accommodation. Details available on request.

Welfare

All students are provided with a contact number in case of emergency and are assisted with general support for matters such as housing and opening a bank account.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to take out a Travel Insurance Policy before travelling to the United Kingdom as our prices for adults do not include insurance.

ExeterThe school accommodation officer inspects all host families before we place a student in the house. We choose our families based on the warmth of the welcome they give our students and how well they look after the student. Some host families are within walking distance of the school but some are a bus ride away. You can buy bus tickets in the school at very competitive prices.

It is essential that you inform us of any special requests for your homestay (allergies, diet, pets) at the time of booking and we will do our best to match your requirements.

A. Private Home

Students who choose Private Home accommodation are provided with Bed and Breakfast. They are accommodated in homestay accommodation, but there is not much contact with the hosts.

B. Homestay Accommodation

Students in homestay accommodation have an evening meal as well as Bed and Breakfast. As the evening meal is taken with the hosts, there is more contact, so more opportunity to practise their English. For this type of accommodation there may be up to 3 students at the same time, again of different mother tongues unless a specific request is made to the contrary.

C. Student Residence

In conjunction with Unite, we offer a student residence in the city centre just 2 minutes walk from the school. You can choose between a large single room with a private bathroom or a single room with a shared bathroom. Kitchen area shared with other students. Laundry facilities on site, 24 hour security plus free broadband.

D. Self Catering

Students in self-catering accommodation will be staying in homestay accommodation but will be able to cook their own food in the kitchen. They will be able to use all the kitchen equipment (pots, pans, cooker, etc.) - but would be expected to arrange a timetable for use of the kitchen with the hosts.

E. Shared Housing (Summer)

During the months of July and August we have student homes available with private bedrooms - but shared self-catering and bathroom facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions1. Do you accept students throughout the year?

Yes. All our schools operate a rolling admissions policy, so will accept students at most times throughout the year space permitting.

2. When will I receive the confirmation for my course?

You will receive the confirmation generally within 48 hours.

3. Once I have received my confirmation am I able to make changes?

Yes you can make changes but it will all be subject to availability and also this will incur an additional cost of £25 to issue new documents.

4. How long will it take to improve English to the required level?

Each student will progress at a different pace through the programme and their rate of progress will depend on how hard they are prepared to study. The Directors of Studies in all schools keep a close eye on all students and are always available to discuss the academic needs of the student.

5. Can we all study in the same school?

We have separate schools for adults, primary age children and secondary age children. Please see page 29 for an explanation of the premises in which the different age groups study.

6. At what time will the minibus pick up my child?

We are unable to provide this information until the Friday before arrival as, especially during the summer, the bus routes (and therefore timings) change every week.

7. Do I need a visa?

Go to: www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/doineedvisa. Students from member states of the European Economic Union DO NOT need visas. Certain others also do not need visas but it is your responsibility to check on this. We would stress the importance of applying for the visa in good time. During the summer months especially, the application process can take up to 12 weeks or even longer.

8. How do I know which visa to apply for?

Please see: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying

9. Can you issue a CAS?

Yes. Providing the necessary documents are sent to us. Despite its name, a CAS is merely an electronic number that is stored in the UKBA files. It does not come in the form of a paper document.
