SKY PledgeI pledge to be true to myself and what I believe in. To be who I am, not who someone else thinks I should be.

I will say Sure Ka Yone to the things that I am all about – like standing up for my friends and listening to a song just because it makes me smile.

I will say Shapo Ka Yone to the things I am good without – like smoking and backstabbing

I will make choices that are true to me.

I will follow my skyline.

I pledge to find my SKY.

I have been proudly living the pledge

and defining my SKY for a year now.

I took my SKY pledge last year at the

very first SKY launch in Gabz, on the

22nd of February. I remember the exact

date because it was the day I took a

leap of faith to take a stand in my life

and the day I got to meet Boity Thulo!

SKY inspires me to be true to myself.

It has also taught me to respect those

around me, who they are and what

they stand for. As much as I value my

SKY and expect it to be respected, it is

just as with the next person. One of the

most important and beautiful qualities

in any relationship is to understand to

be understood.

My friends are SKY girls too. We are

a bunch of different personalities

who take pride in self-autonomy. We

embrace our uniqueness, because it

is our differences that complement

each other’s characters. If there is

something I love about all my friends,

it’s how different we are but can

become one with so much ease. That

is because we respect and value each

other and above all love each other just

for who we are as individuals. ☺

It is in this spirit that in this issue of

#SKYMag, we’re celebrating SKY’s

birthday, the awesome journey that

we’ve taken, as friends, and the unique

qualities that make us each special.

There’s a little something for everyone.

We are all different BUT we know what

we like, and we choose to live life on our

own terms! Our cover girls have chosen

to stay true to themselves and each

other- they won our Big Birthday Cover

competition. Their story is on page 22.

Also, check out the #SKYNation’s

birthday well- wishes on page 7, SKY’s

amazing, one- year journey on page

8, and our #FriendsOfSKY say ‘Happy

Anniversary’ in our poster!

Last year, I became a diSKYple to

encourage other girls to be and stay

true to themselves and to be able to

define themselves as individuals

against all odds <3 Never be afraid

to be awesome in your own way.

Sometimes being the weird and

different one is good if it is who

you really are. Dare to be unique,

stand out and be counted- we

have a special article for all

SKY girls on how to be more

confident on page 17- enjoy

being you :)☺

In the words of Swami

Vivekananda, “Truth can be

stated in a million different

ways, yet each one can be

true.” So to all sky girls out

there, keep rocking and

defining your sky. YOU

ROCK.

Happy 1st birthday

to SKYGIRLSBW.

It has been an

awesome and

inspirational

year with you!

Loves <3 AndrogynyGood news- if you’re a tomboy (o sure ka jeans and Chuck Taylors :D), ‘boyish’ shapes and fashion items are on trend ;) This look is about clean, straight lines and simple shapes. If you feel like making it a bit more ladylike, you can pair a masculine item with a more feminine one ;)

Brooklyn BeckhamThe 15 year old son of famous footballer, David Beckham and former Spice Girl (now fantastic fashion fox!) Victora, seems to be following in his father’s footsteps :) Brooklyn is part of Arsenal’s youth academy and making mad moves on the football field. We know that he’s always going to be compared to his famous dad, but it looks like he has some talent of his own, and we <3 that he’s all about following his passion for sport!

Botswana Student NetworkWhether you’re in Form 1 or 5, you might be looking forward to going

to university, picking subjects that will get you credits for a degree-

BSN is a great place to look for scholarships, free online courses

and news about what BW students are getting up to- SKY <3

Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 3 in the works!

The popular movie sequel is based on author Ann Brashares’s fifth and final

Sisterhood book, Sisterhood Everlasting. Four teenage girls — Carmen,

Tibby, Bridget, and Lena — are best friends who are about to be apart for

the first time. On their last day together, they find a seemingly ordinary pair

of jeans that fit them all perfectly and flatter their figures. As they each

go through their own challenges, the jeans represent the strength of their

friendship through tough times. In the third movie, the girls have grown

up and moved to different places. Seeing how they support each other

and manage to keep in touch amidst busy schedules, there’s no doubt this

sisterhood they’ve formed will last a lifetime! SKY <3s

Page 12: SKY Magazine Issue 6

check this out!If you wanna find out what

your vibe is, take the quiz on page 37!

Find our tribeWhat?

We’re not talking Batlokwa,

Bakalanga and Bangwato

here. We’re talking the tribes

we find as we grow up,

mature and our interests

change – you could call them

identities or groups where

we feel comfortable. Most

groups of friends are full of

different personalities. Even

though we love our friends

for their uniqueness, it’s

also important to stay true to

yourself and pursue whatever

interests YOU love – you’ll

meet a gang of cool people

along the way, who then

become part of YOUR tribe, no

matter where you are! :)

Why?Crews are awesome but cliques

can be claustrophobic. Spending

ALL your time with the same

people can be restrictive – rather

hang out with other friends

sometimes and bring back the

excitement of new things to your

crew ;) As teenagers we are all

going through changes, and

keeping our options open is the

best way to deal with this. The

world is wide, feel free to find

people with the same interests as

you and explore it together!

Who?That’s up to you to decide! You can belong to as many ‘tribes’ as you

like – lots of interests and friendship groups overlap which is very

cool when it comes to being yourself and staying true to YOU! So

whether you’re into a particular genre of music, way of dressing or

way of life, embrace your passion!

You know your friend’s sister who shares your love of goofy jokes?

Meet up with her to share some. That girl you’ve seen in your drum

class who loves Hip Hop? Invite her for a jam sometime, if you both

love music you might have a lot in common :)

Work on feeling confident enough

to try new things. Believe it – if you

feel a certain way, there are DEF

other people in the world feeling

that way too - you just have to find

them! Don’t worry, you can make new

friends AND keep your old friends; all

it takes is the confidence to say ‘shapo

ka yone’ when you want to go and do a YOU

thing. Stick to your guns and say ‘sure ka

yone’ when you want to do something you love,

even if your friends don’t :)How?

Page 13: SKY Magazine Issue 6

letter to myletter to my

selfself14year-old 14year-old

First on your to- do list is to make some friends. It won’t be easy… You’re still shy and quiet, a bit of a loner and prefer reading your romance novels, but you gotta get out there and meet people. Guess what- you will! There are so many things you will consider when choosing friends, starting with the cartoons they watch and the music they listen to. It seems like a crazy notion but it’s one of the best ideas you will ever have in your life. They gotta love Billy & Mandy, Ed, Edd & Eddy, the Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo and have to be fans of Usher, Pink, Beyonce, Missy Elliot, JLo, Britney Spears and Jay Z...

You’re also going to want friends that like you for who you are and have similar values such as respect, honesty, love and hard work. These are things you have always believed and will keep believing in as you grow up. Not only are you going to find friends like these, you are going to stay friends with them for a long time to come. You will learn a lot from them and appreciate who they are. You guys will go through a lot together; you will make mistakes, fight and disagree but you will always have each other’s backs. Stay away from those that make you feel uncomfortable, trying to hook you up with a guy or asking you to try out alcohol and smoking

after school with them. You know that it is not for you. Always be clear about where you stand.

Although mama and papa are still strict, don’t stress about it. Don’t think they don’t care about your feelings; all they are doing is looking out for you and protecting you the best way they know how. You will appreciate all of it as you get older. Even better, you’ll discover the friends you’ve made have parents almost as strict as yours and you guys will laugh about it every week!

You’ve always had good grades in school. Stay focused. You can do better, just put more effort and read some more and it will pay off. You’ve always loved music and it’s no surprise you pick it up as one of your subjects. It will become one of your favourite subjects and one you’re best at, you even get something for it at one of the prize giving ceremonies. YAY!

You’ve always been a dreamer. STAY dreaming because that is what will push you to face your fears and go after what you want. You can do anything, you can be anything and you will be everything you dreamed you could be.

You’re amazing, I love you! Hugs & sloppy kisses!!

Minkie

Dear Minkie,

Welcome to high school Nunu! Before we even get started, let me assure you it won’t be as bad as you’re thinking. Okay fine, so you only know ONE person from your old primary school, you’re discovering that you are blind as a bat and need glasses and worse, the school administers corporal punishment which you’ve never experienced. All of it means absolutely nothing baby! You are going to have so much fun you won’t even remember how scared and anxious you were!

Page 14: SKY Magazine Issue 6

…Aaaand we’re back: The year is picking up nicely and I see so many big and great things happening for you my SKY sister :D I won’t say much: We love surprising people at SKY headquarters, hehe.

I got to hang with the homie Staxxx, who stays winning. I give him another 2 years and we will be reading about him and seeing his 12 year old looking face on international TV :D

Who’s Staxxx and why do you call yourself BIG MONEY STAXXX- you got money ninja?Hahaha :D ... StaxXx is a young, ambitious rapper, born on the 27th of February 1995 as Kago Serole... And uhm, I went through a series of rap names before I became, and settled for StaxXx. The ‘Big Money’ is for emphasis. I’m tryna stack up!

If you were asked to describe your music in 5 words, what would you say?Real, honest, articulate, passionate and accurate.

Nice… give me 3 of your favourite artists...I love Kanye West’s influence on the Hip-Hop culture and on Hip Hop music in general, he’s very influential and provocative. The same applies to AKA. He’s different and pushes the limits in terms of Hip-Hop in Africa. I admire his level of success, his drive, and his attitude. As for Drake, it goes without saying; he makes music that I relate to and whenever I’m jamming to a Drake song, I feel like I know where he came from and I know where he is taking this.

Do you consider yourself a good rapper?I’ve been told so, but personally, I think I could be better. I’m just aight, tota... And no, this is not me being ‘fake humble’... there are days where I listen to my music, which I rarely do, and I’m very impressed with it, but when I compare it to music made by the artists I look up to and respect, I always feel like I could do better. But I’m not whack, that’s for sure!! :D

Do you plan on being the biggest rapper BW and beyond has seen or you’re fine where you are?HAHAHA, I’m trying to think of anyone who is ever content with their current position in anything. I

believe the first millionaire wasn’t happy with a million and ended up stacking a billion; so just like that, I also want to be the greatest. I want to put my country on the map and take it beyond what the current greatest has. It’s the nature of the game as well, you play to win. But even before BW, I just want to be the greatest artist I can be. I’m trying to push myself to my greatest. That is the Kanye West and AKA in me.

Whats the highlight of your music career so far?Releasing my first album, Destined for Greatness… That is by far my greatest achievement. :D

You’re quite swagged up, who is your style influence?Well, *brushes shoulders*, thank you! :D hahah, again, Kanye West and AKA. :D So much swag on ‘em dudes! I don’t try to look like ‘em or anything, but they keep me in check! I know I can never come out looking like trash. But thank God we don’t have paparazzi cos I have really bad days sometimes. Hahaha!

Give me 3 local celebs and socialites killing it with fashion:Teshawn Miller, hands down! Peggy Grynberg, and Ozi F Teddy.

My SKY sisters ba sure ka wena skim, holla at em please...To the most amazing nation of girls; I appreciate y’all so much! I’m always so proud to see SKY posters and ads, and when I see a SKY Girl rocking a band or a T-shirt, I’m filled with joy. Y’all are an amazing bunch, and I hope you all stay true to what you all believe in, stay focused and swerve on all the negative stuff. We are the new cool, don’t ever doubt it for a second! You’ll def see me at the next activation with my SKY band on, swaggy and ready to rock as usual. Trust it!

Goitse Kgaswane reps Mahalapye and studied theatre :) She is best known for appearing in Big Brother Hotshots, and SKY girls have mad love for her! In an interview with www.tvsa.co.za before she went into the BBA House, she said she wouldn’t pretend to be

someone she’s not- now that’s SKY ;)

YOU wanted to know what makes Goitse tick, so SKY asked her YOUR questions <3

Page 19: SKY Magazine Issue 6

Minah Monkie Pharatlhatlhe Which music do you listen to?

A lot of Jazz

Ounah Onanah Balebanye What is ur favourite quote?

“They’ll either want to kill you, kiss you or be

you.” GO RA TA Who is your favourite writer?

Sue Monk Kidd Nonofo Grace Kwapa Who inspires you?

My mom. She is a hard worker and very optimistic

about life even during the darkest days. She has

always believed in me :)

Sharonlorato Misskatlego Angelakay Cyrus What’s your biggest dream?

To be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and to win an

Oscar for Best Actress. I’m a dreamer, lol :D

MissKerry Larona Atlhopheng What are your keys to success?

Determination and taking risks!

GO RA TA What qualities do you look for in a crush?

Haha… Someone who respects himself and others,

good looking of course; well- mannered as well.

Lëçhãñê Lõbs How has Big Brother impacted your life?

Positively, it happened right after I completed my

degree in theatre; though I missed graduation, I

can’t complain. It came at the right time. Africa

knows Goitse, now, and what I’m about. It was

my grand stage. I loved everything about it and I

would do it again!

When I went into the house, I knew that I had

to expect anything and everything. There were

26 of us under the same roof and I knew it was

going to be chaotic and overwhelming but I opted

to overlook all of that and have fun. It’s either

they loved me or hated me but that wasn’t going

to set me back in any way! Everything that I had

intended on doing in the house, I did. Now, I’m

working on a couple of projects. As soon as they

have shaped up, I’ll share with everyone :)

My Shapos- disrespectful and dishonest people,

SKYWho are your closest friends? What do you love

about them?My sisters, Ntebo and Keneilwe. We are all

different in our personalities and qualities but we

get along really well. They understand me and

my complexities, they are extremely supportive. I

called them Team Goitse even before Big Brother

Africa, haha! Ntebo is the oldest, she gives great

advice; Ken is the youngest and toughest, and they

both watch out for me always <3

SKYPlease can you give a shout out to the #SKYNation?

You girls are on a journey to become the best

women this world needs, I’m proud of you all! I

Zizi PantherIt’s so cool that we’ve been here for a year, now. The SKY family has grown and I’m absolutely proud to be part of it. It’s been a great year, and we’ve met so many amazing girls. I hope we’re going to continue being true to ourselves- peace, love and lots of SKY, lovies :P <3

Saone a.k.a Sasa (The Core)Saone is what I like to call The Core of the family because almost everyone relates easiest to her first before the rest of the girls, especially the fragile ones. She has one big, selfless heart that’ll have you thinking you’re the only person on planet earth (in a good way though). Sasa’s one tough nut to crack and just won’t compromise her pride for anything except her friends’ happiness. She’s not a pushover so don’t let the puppy eyes and that wide smile fool you. I used to think that I’d always be the shoulder to cry on all my life but when I met this girl, I knew I had to sit down. Gape o rata DIJO! Hahahaha, and has chipmunk cheeks to help her. Like all my girls, RE SURE KA JESO and we ain’t looking back!

I have a PILE of friends but if I was to pick 3, it would be Faith Kgosietsile,

Onalenna Rampogo and Saone Maruapula.Back in 2013, I came in at school as a transfer student. I knew absolutely

NOBODY! I planned on keeping it that way because I HATED the idea

of moving from the city and having to settle for the humble life of

Mahalapye. I was not planning on making a life there, but BOY am I glad

I did.

I didn’t choose these girls, they chose me.FAITH (The White Chick)This girl taught me NEVER to judge a book by its cover. I’ll never forget the day that the weird girl from class with hair that looked like it was supposed to be an afro, a semi-ironed shirt e chobetswe mo borokgweng jo bo pick’ilweng jaana approached me and thought she could be friends with me? Girl?! Then she opened her mouth and asked my name in this British accent and I was just knocked out. We hit it off and now we’re bff’s. What makes Faith one in a million is that she’s a SUCKER for fashion. Faith KNOWS what she wants and goes for it. But has this element ya bogwane that’ll have you asking “REALLY?!”

Onalenna (The Saint)We call her Boss. Boss is VERY authoritative and disciplined. If it wasn’t for her ever- present smile, you’d think she was uptight! She’s very unique because she has this tangible purity oozing from out of her and she’s quite literally flawless in everything, especially her singing... I’ve known Boss for two years but still don’t believe she’s capable of feeling sad. She’s very innocent and that’s why we love her… *YAY BOSS*

i choose There are so many different girls that make up the #SKYNation! It’s awesome

how many special young women there are in BW! In the last issue of #SKYMag,

we spoke about how teens all over the world are saying ‘no’ to smoking and

making the choice to be #SmokeFree ☺ Here are SKY girls who have said the

same thing- they have chosen to say #ShapoKaYone to smoking, too ;)

Gone, a SKY Girl appearing on Pula Power, said: “I don’t smoke at

all, so I wouldn’t let anyone force me to smoke - I would definitely

say no to that cigarette. I respect my decisions and what I do so I

would say no!”

About singing:I started singing when I was 6. My dad had a Garage band, and I would go and listen to them with my sisters. I have been entering talent searches since I was 9.

About MAD: When I was 13, I joined MAD and went through the process. I learned so much about the craft. Everyone that was there and part of making the dream happen were very encouraging, as well.

How did he get into song writing?I started doing covers and had difficulty writing my own songs because all I knew was the baby, love song kind of thing… when I turned 14, because I grew up and matured a little bit, I picked up the pen and started writing stuff that was really interesting and gravitated away from the radio. So ever since I turned 14 I write songs every day.

How he describes his music:My genre is very a experimental one called Alternative RnB. I experiment with different patterns of sounds and vocal lines that are different from the music that is played today. I am very serious about the messages in my songs. I want to send a message to other teenagers who are my age to stay away from smoking and drinking and there has be substance in music that helps people grow into good people.

About SKY GirlsSKY girls are awesome. It’s about time that girls get a platform; it is time for men who have dominated to share their power. Girls have so many creative ideas to give to the world. If you respect a girl, and you listen to them, you will then be able to understand them. All girls need to be heard.

About disagreements with your friends:It really sucks when you move in a different direction from where your friend is going, in their life. Friendship between girls is very intense and emotional my advice is; be strong- the only way you can move on is to be strong. If that friendship was meant to be, then your friend will be back, after the two of you have grown and learned about yourselves. I think if you stay in a relationship and you know there is bad in it and ignore it, nothing will change. It will stay that way until it explodes and that is detrimental for your friendship.

He’s inspired by: Frank Ocean, Erykah Badu, The Beatles and Janelle Monae because they come from different genres but have the same messages in their songs.

MoongaK is a singer, and finalist of the My African Dream talent search competition in 2011. Since then, he has been keeping it underground, going to school and practicing his craft. Now that he has finished high school, he’s aiming for the stars. He has some mad love for the SKY nation, and had some interesting things to share about his life and friendships… Read on ;)

BodyI think we can all agree that this summer has been packing

some serious heat! As SKY girls, it’s our job to keep it hot

as the weather, with the most stylish trends from head, toe

to nails ;) Here are a few sizzling nail trends to try out this

season:

Matte: Easily the biggest nail trend of the last couple of years, matte nails have been on everybody’s fingertips for a while now. They look especially great in charcoals, blacks, and indigos.Tip: If you can’t find a matte nail polish, make your own by combining your regular nail polish with corn flour and applying as usual, or applying hot steam to your polished nails while they’re wet. You can do this by holding your fingertips over a cup of boiling water so careful not to burn yourself!

1. Neons: Bold and vibrant, neon colours like

lemon, orange and fuschia are gorgeous! You can also try more unique colours like purple or blue neons to make a statement.

Tip: To make a neon nail polish “pop” more, apply a white base coat, and then two top coats of your nail polish

2.

Pastels: Scared of neons? A great way to try bright colours is with more subtle pastels. For lighter complexions, lilac and peach pastels look wonderful. Good news for girls with darker skin tones: the pastel coloured world is your oyster; all pastels look great against dark skin ;)

Tip: You can use the colours that look best on you in your wardrobe to select your best pastel nail colour.

3.

Nude: Nudes are classic and

sophisticated, and the best colours to

choose if you like to keep short nails.

If you want to choose opaque nail polish,

choose a shade lighter than your skin tone. For sheer

polishes, match them to the colour of your nail bed.

Tip: Always apply nude nail polish under natural

lighting to see if it’s a flattering colour.

We love our friends, and our friendships are precious to us. Sometimes, we don’t always

get along with our besties- no worries, though- Big Sister SKY’s got your back if you’re

going through a tough time with your girl… <3

Big Sister SKY:

Although it has always been said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”, if your friend copies your style, it might make you feel uneasy… If your friend copies your style, fashion wise, it may be because she doesn’t know where to start with her own personal style. She may be looking to you for inspiration and taking it a tad too far. Suggest a friendly shopping trip, where you let her lead the way picking clothes; give her honest and kind opinions on her selections, your approval will probably mean a lot. You can also look at fashion sections in girl’s magazines, check out blogs and websites on the net together and create lookbooks

which will inspire your daily fashion choices. This could be a chance for you to switch your style up too! If you want to take it further, organise a clothes swap (great if you involve other friends, too). It’s a great idea to boost her confidence, help her develop her own style and get you new threads in the process!

It is important to note that your friend stealing your style might mean that her self-esteem is a little low; make sure that you understand exactly why she’s copying you. It may be an issue worth having an honest and serious conversation over; remember to be compassionate and kind :)

You and your friend just moved to a new school, this can be very intimidating for some people. Try to understand that your bestie might be spending time with a different crowd to adjust better to you guys’ new environment. Try reaching out to her <3 Find out whether the two of you can organise a routine- regular dates you go on together, so you don’t lose touch with each other.

Another idea is to talk to her about it. Tell her how you feel and ask her why she has seemingly lost interest in your relationship. Maybe there’s something she’s feeling, or even something that you did, that created this sudden distance. If she doesn’t want to meet you half- way, you might have to think about letting go of the friendship ☺ Growing apart from friends is a growing pain. I have grown apart from friends and thought my world is ending, only to reunite with them later, or realise that I could live without some friends, after all...

It might be a chance for you to make new friends, too! Try a new activity, pick up a hobby, or attend some cool events. This is a great way to meet new people with different interests and establish great relationships. *Here’s to happy friendships*:)

Since we moved to a new school, my best friend has started spending more time with other people, and less time with me. Why?

What do I do when my friend begins to copy my style?

Mostly a – Chilled-out chiqaYou’re a ‘go with the flow’ SKY Girl! You’re super chilled and prefer doing things that the rest of the gang wants to do. You’re considerate and often put other people’s happiness before your own, which is admirable. Your chomas probably think of you as a solid friend who’s there for them to study with, shop with – sometimes you might even be their shoulder to cry on! Remember to plan for some ‘me time’ to reflect on what YOU want, and make sure that you say a firm ‘no’ to anything you don’t want in your life – you’ll be respected for it :)

Mostly b – Quirky queenYou’re a one-of-a-kind sorta gal;) Your friends love you for that – you’re always telling them about something interesting you came across in the adventure you call life! Your quirkiness means you spice up conversations and carve your own path in everything you do. You’re not scared of new experiences, which is awesome! Just make sure that you look before you leap – not ALL new experiences should be embraced. Before your embark on a new adventure, take a minute to think about if it fits with your Sures and Shapos – if it does then jump in and enjoy!

Mostly c – Style sisterYou’re a fashionista who knows what she wants in life! This is awesome – you’re go-getting, confident and assertive. People like you often lead the pack when you’re deciding what to do as a crew. You probably know exactly what’s cool and what’s not, and other girls are likely to look up to you because of that. Take this as a compliment, but remember to use this power to help your shyer friends out rather than bulldoze them with your awesome ideas or pressuring them into doing something that isn’t in line with their SKY. #ReSureKaStrongWomen

What’s your vibe?
