SKY NET LONGBOW AND RECURVEThe defeat solution you will want to deploy

Defeating RCIED and UAS

In customer tests we have proven Kirintec has the best Counter UAS solution on the market, in Sky Net Longbow and Recurve. These products are based on our field-proven solution Mercury, for countering Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (RCIEDs). Our new Sky Net jamming solution is configured to provide:

• Vehicle mounted Longbow

• Man-portable Recurve

Sky Net Longbow and Recurve Counter UAS defeat all known UAS threats and can be programmed as new threats appear. Our technology creates an exclusion zone, so any drone trying to enter this area will lose both its video and control links.

The threat

Continued advances in UAS technology have profound implications regarding the nature of modern warfare, in particular asymmetric warfare.

The UAS is one of the most easily obtained threat platforms and is therefore increasingly a logical choice for the enemy to use.

Examples of hostile use of drones by non-state actors date back to 2004, by Hezbollah in Lebanon. An enemy is likely to deploy UAS to fulfil multiple roles. The obvious ones are intelligence gathering and payload delivery. However, it is considered that the use of UAS poses a threat to:

• military operations• airline safety• national security• prison security • border security• personal security• VIPs• privacy

You can trust Kirintec to deliver a future-proof solution, which provides significant stand-off from this threat. Other companies are making Kinetic options available, but these are likely to be incompatible with the some deployment options we’ve listed. It also removes any chance of exploiting of the enemy drone for intelligence stat points.

The UAS problem – a military perspective

Enemies commonly use UAS for intelligence gathering, specifically to monitor troop movement or to sight indirect fire and to deliver small explosive or novel payloads.

UAS are operated via a remote radio link, which can typically provide up to a 2km (1.25 miles) stand-off, with elevation up to 125m (400ft) Above Ground Level (AGL*) and carry HD cameras. This capability allows tactical observation from a great distance and increases the enemies options significantly.

Radio links

UAS normally have three radio links in use:

• Control

• Video

• GPS

Within the frequency bands used many different communication protocols and standards can be found. Some are proprietary to the UAS manufacture.

We understand the threat

Our experts will advise you on the capability you require, based on the threat you are subjected to. Defining your operational aim regarding UAS early is crucial. This enables us to provide the best technical solution possible, allowing you to advance your response.

However, based on the assumption the most pressing requirement is to remove control and intelligence gathering capabilities, Kirintec’s top level recommendation is to deny both:

• Control

• Video

In testing we have successfully jammed both control and video links at a 1:10 ratio (That is controller and jammer equidistant from the UAS).

Global Positioning System (GPS) could also be denied, but this could pose other battlespace issues – therefore denial would not be recommended, unless you decide it is imperative.

We also understand that having our equipment switched on permanently, will have an impact on the ISM bands, and that may not be acceptable. In this case we would integrate a detection system to the Sky Net to minimise that RF fratricide.

Sky Net Longbow and Recurve’s capability provides a highly effective defeat solution that removes the threat posed by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or Drone Aircraft. Sky Net Longbow and Recurve can inhibit control, video and other links.

UAS CONTROL AND VIDEO LINKAGESHow can you defeat the threat?

Control and video link standards are often proprietary to the manufacturer, but could use some or all of the following physical layer features:

• Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS), used to reduce interference and maintain high transmission stability

• Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna technology with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and advanced algorithms, to improve stability of data bandwidth in complex environments and improved overall dynamic performance

• Near real-time signal system dynamically selects the optimum channel (out of 32 channels) for transmission

• Ever improving features such as swarm applications and DJI functions such as Tapfly cause additional complications

• Other Software Development Kits (SDKs) such as Pix4D or DJI Autopilot can be used to further modify the functionality of the UAS.

Transmit power levels range from +10dBm (10 mW) to +20dBm (100mW) as standard, but these could be modified to increase power levels.

The combination of these radio features results in a link which can be difficult to jam with many Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) solutions, but they can be defeated by Kirintec’s solution.

The GPS link is used by the system to provide waypoints, return home or immediate land functionality. The Kirintec solution could cover one or both of the L1/L2 bands, but enemy UAS are likely to use the more commercially available L1 band. This could leave L2 available and unaffected for military use.

Operational considerations

Due to the set-up of the target drone being unknown, concentrating on a single link may not achieve operational aims.

Link removal Possible effects:

Removing the control link only • May see the UAS revert to ‘return home’ mode, it may still have full use of video therefore could continue to gather intelligence

• UAS may revert to ‘hover in place’ mode and still have full use of video

• UASmaycrashatanunspecifiedpoint.Thiscouldbeaconcernifithadanexplosiveorchemicalpayload.

Removing the video link only • WouldreducetheintelligencegatheringcapabilitiesoftheUAS.Itmaystillbeable toprovidesomelocationdetailsthroughGPS(ifknowntobehoveringdirectlyover

Removing GPS only • ItwouldprohibitreturntobaseandtheuseofwaypointsandmayconfusetheUASenoughtoeitherhoverinplaceorimmediatelylanddependingonitsset-up.Ifitwassetup to hover in place, on loss of GPS, it may still have access to its video link and continue intelligencegathering.

• InhibitionofGPSfrequenciescouldhavesignificantfratricideeffectsonfriendlyforces.

It is important to consider the following effects:

Note: Kirintec would always suggest denying both control and video links simultaneously.

UNDERSTANDING ANTENNASOmni Vs Directional

Directional antennas can offer enhanced range over Omni-directional antennas, but with a reduced sphere of coverage:

• Directional antenna improve range only in the aligned direction

• With the elevation of a UAS considered, that system may be able to observe a patrol significantly further than the patrol (without acquisition technology) can observe the UAS

• Using Omni-directional antenna removes the need to identify, target and acquire UAS before aligning the directional antenna

• An Omni-directional system could work in conjunction with a co-located C-RCIED system, improving performance of both systems

• Omni directional antenna also remove the issue of ‘swarm attacks’. With a ‘bubble of protection’ an attack by twenty UAS or just one makes no difference. Directional antenna solutions would be swamped.

Trust us to help you select the right solution

Enlisting omni antenna prevents the need for soldiers to constantly monitor the sky for drones or procure expensive detection equipment. They are easy to use and remove the need of crewed over-watch while being battle field ready.

To minimise the operational burden on the war-fighter, and remove the need to identify enemy UAS, Kirintec’s recommendation is to select omnidirectional antennas where the jamming range is sufficient.

A suite of directional-antenna could also be provided, which could be used if the UAS and enemy location is known and more range is required. Please ask us if you would like to discuss the open field analysis, lab tests and analysis. As testing has demonstrated that UAS is defeated at a significant range. Our flexible configurations allow systems to be optimised to meet the user requirement and integration needs.

Providing customisable systems

Our field-proven systems are customisable to provide optimal UAS Defeat solutions and are trusted across the globe.

Kirintec’s Sky Net Longbow and Recurve suite is a field proven capability offering the user reliable and market leading RCIED (Remote Controlled Improvised Explosive Device) threat protection and is highly regarded by Governments and users.

Outstanding performance

Proven results when jamming:

• Kirintec’s Sky Net Longbow solution can reach jamming ranges of up to 9km. This is achievable with high gain omni-directional antennas versus a UAS pilot 1km from the UAS

• Sky Net Recurve can achieve jamming ranges of up to 4km versus a UAS pilot 1km from the UAS with Omni-directional antennas

KINESIS PLUSOffering enhanced flexibility, control and information

Remote control

To optimise power consumption and minimise disruption to friendly forces, our Kinesis Plus technology can be integrated within the systems to remotely switch on or off both the Sky Net Longbow - vehicle mounted and Recurve Ventura systems and allow an over-the-air fill change capability.

Kinesis Plus offers a long range data link, as part of a wide area network allowing multiple jammers to be controlled concurrently.

Avoiding the need to carry extra equipment, these upgrades allow Sky Net Longbow and Recurve systems to be controlled via the warfighter’s radio.

Our advanced technology can either be physically integrated into the jamming system, or retro fitted with other co-located systems as required.

Radio communication is achievable whilst jamming using Kirintec’s patented Xchange technology known as Communications Through Inhibition (CTI).

Detection

To support the end use in the identification of threats, Kirintec can supply detection technology to identify and locate airborne threats.

This technology which is in the early stages of Research and Development can be retro-fitted to fielded systems to bring about automatic jammer control as required.

At the point of ordering, please contact us. We will advise you on the best configuration for your requirements when selecting UAS Defeat equipment, ensuring you have the most effective technology according to the threat.
