SkyFile Mail Introduction
• In the industry, changing the email address of a ship is always a big issue!
• Why?― The email address is used by a lot of people around the world
― Changing the address-books takes ages
― It might impact the daily business of ships & companies
― Emails can be lost or never delivered
• Be obliged to change email addresses might prevent closing a deal with a
new customer.

The Email Address, A Key Element!
• SkyFile Server can host a subdomain if the domain is exclusively used for
SkyFile traffic.
Example:
– Domain name: myfleet.worldcompany.com
– SkyFile root-account : [email protected]
– Master account: [email protected]
– wordcompany.com is the domain of the company
– myfleet.worldcompany.com is the sub-domain solely used for SkyFile traffic
Rules:
• DNS MX record set to « mail.skyfile.com »
• “andrea” must be unique in the SkyFile server DB

Hosting on SkyFile® Mail Server
• A mail exchanger record (MX record) is a type of resource record in the
Domain Name System (DNS) that specifies a mail server responsible for
accepting email messages on behalf of a recipient’s domain.
• The set of MX records of a domain name specifies how email should be
routed with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

DNS MX Record
• SkyFile server can handle a domain name per ship
Example:– Root account = vessel1.worldcompany.com
– Master account: [email protected]
Rules:
• DNS MX record set to mail.skyfile.com
• No need to get a single: “andrea”– [email protected] and
– [email protected] can be managed by the system

Dedicated Domain for Ships
• Domain used by the shipping company AND by the ships
• Mail forwarding to SkyFile Server to be put in place by the requester
• Email goes to the server of the company first
Example:
― [email protected] forwarded to mail.skyfile.com
• Mail source routing― Outgoing emails (Ship2Shore) are routed to the Exchange server of the
company instead of being directly sent to Internet
― Full control of incoming and outgoing emails
― Customized offer, on demand only (Please, contact the Product Manager)
Rules:
• The company shall put in place an efficient anti-spam protection
• Redirection must be done for all ships and/or subaccounts
• Wildcard is authorized

Shared Domain
• Ships can be moved to Marlink infrastructures in an easier way
• Email address remains the same
• Configuration, address-book, archives and other important modules remain
the same in case of SkyFile Mail Premium (Outlook compatibility)
• Easy & fast configuration
• Smooth & almost transparent transition
• The Captain keeps the same environment
• Domain hosting is the preferred solution― Better security, less configuration for the customer and Marlink.

User Benefits
• Hosted domain― It must be used for SkyFile Mail traffic only
• Shared-domain― The server of the shipping-company must have an efficient anti-spam filter.
• Email address: the part before the @― Must be unique on SkyFile server
― Must be 15 characters length maximum

Structural Restrictions
• Conditions― Hosted domain & Shared domain are not standard offers
― Technical resources are limited
― It requires a good preparation and technical investigations
• Prerequisite― Hosted domain & Shared domain are dedicated to fleets (at least 10 vessels)
― Exceptions are possible: they shall be justified by a clear business plan
• Live-Test― Live-test can be performed only after an official agreement with the customer
