A MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC D IRECTOR - B I LL THE ISEN

I have to confess that this production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess at Skylight Music Theatre is a dream come true. From the first day I became artistic director nine years ago, the goal was that at some point during my tenure we would be able to present this Gershwin masterpiece, which many feel is the most important American opera ever written. And here we are…never let it be said that dreams don’t come true.

In researching Porgy and Bess I found a quote from George Gershwin that I have come back to time and again for a number of reasons. In 1933 as he began composing this opera, Gershwin visited Charleston, South Carolina to immerse himself in the culture. While there he spoke with Frank B. Gilbreth, a reporter for the Charleston News and Courier and this was how he described the new work;

“Porgy and Bess will be a serious attempt to put into operatic form a purely American theme. If I am successful it will resemble a combination of the drama and romance of Carmen and the beauty of Meistersinger……if you can imagine that!”

And amazingly that is just what he did- but at the same time he composed a score with a jazz influence unlike anything ever before written, but also unmistakably Gershwin.

What Richard Carsey and I have created for Skylight is a chamber opera version of Porgy and Bess. We have taken many of the adjustments that Gershwin himself made for the second production back in 1935 and in addition, embraced the intimate world of the Cabot Theatre and concentrated on the characters in the story, considering their rich and nuanced motivations. This approach reminds us of the powerful work that Gershwin and his collaborators did and gives us the opportunity to see the residents of Catfish Row in a more individual way so we can better present the sense of community that truly is the key to this great work.

On a personal note I want to say thank you to everyone who has made these past nine years the most fulfilling, educational and inspirational of my professional career. Even though I will begin my new position as Director of Opera at the University of Iowa this fall, Milwaukee and Skylight will always be “home” for me. So there will be no goodbyes- just simply……until we meet again.

A MESSAGE FROM THE M ANAGING DIRECTOR - A MY S . JENSEN

Welcome to Skylight Music Theatre and our production of The Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess. We would like to thank John Shannon and Jan Serr for their generous support of this production and for being so dedicated to the Skylight through the years. It is a little hard to believe that we have come to our final production of the 2012-13 season so soon. It is all the more bittersweet that this marks Bill Theisen’s final production as Skylight’s Artistic Director. The 2012-13 has been a tremendously successful one, with amazing critical acclaim, larger audiences than ever before and a true showcase of the best of what Bill has brought to Skylight over the past nine years.

If you haven’t already heard the news, I am so happy to share that Bill has been appointed as the new Director of Opera at the University of Iowa and will be joining the faculty there in August. Bill is as tailor made for the position in Iowa as he was for his role of Artistic Director here at Skylight. You may not be aware that Bill has long been in demand throughout the country, not only stage directing but also teaching master classes. His new position will enable him to continue to direct as well as teach an opera workshop class and the occasional opera history class and work directly with individual students. The students at the University of Iowa are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from such a talented and dedicated artist and teacher.

I can not thank Bill enough for his generosity, advice and unending support of Skylight as we transition to new artistic leadership. We have had a tremendous response so far to incoming Artistic Director Viswa Subbaraman’s 2013-14 season. Subscription sales are outpacing our targets and continue to build on last year’s growth. If you aren’t already a subscriber, we encourage you to subscribe in order to enjoy all of the benefits of being a part of our entire season’s offerings.
