Skype Operations Framework Skype Operations Framework defines and enables the right way to deploy or migrate every time, delivering success. The SOF framework provides customers and partners with a standardized approach to successfully plan, deliver and operate Skype for Business by incorporating practical guidance, tools, assets and recommended practices.

What is SOF? Best-in-class planning, delivery and operation methodology Standardized recommended practices to ensure quality experience and fills gaps in tools,

readiness and process Repeatable and evolutionary for existing and new implementations Validated by engineering at customers and endorsed by partners Enables focus on core competencies rather than creating delivery methodologies Provides a common language to use across the ecosystem

SOF Cloud Migration SOF Phases define the Skype for Business online lifecycle which customers and partners work through, adding business value by onboarding new workloads and features.

Plan – gather information and insights to asses, design and prepare for a Skype for Business Online service. Define expected business value, assess readiness for implementation and undertake remediation activities

Deliver – transition from deploying on premises to delivering high quality cloud services, by effectively implementing & delivering Skype for Business Online services while driving adoption. Identify areas for improvement by implementing new features and capabilities as these are released to deliver rapid success and additional value

Operate –maintain a high quality and reliable Skype for Business Online service. Provide monitoring, reporting, run and support services

Planning & PreparationThe following steps need to be done by the person who purchased the Skype for Business Online subscription, or someone else in your business who is assigned to the Office 365 global admin role.

If you have a firewall or proxy server that restricts access to part of the internet, you will need open the specific ports to allow Skype for Business Online services to go through.

Azure Active DirectorySkype for Business Online is part of the Office 365 suite of services. To set up Skype for Business Online you need to sign in to Office 365. Go to https://portal.office.com/ and enter your Office 365 user ID and password. After you sign in, you’ll see the Office 365 admin center.

2

Page 7: Skype for Business Online POC

The first step is to verify your domain in Office 365. Afterwards, add all users either using CSV files or through active directory synchronization. Lastly, setup online services through DNS management.

Verify Domain Go to setup on the Office 365 admin center to start the wizard.

Add the domain you want to use.

3

Page 8: Skype for Business Online POC

Follow the steps in the wizard to enter your custom domain name, and then add the TXT Record on your domain controller or domain admin page that verifies that you own the domain.

Add UsersAfter you have verified your domain ownership, you will also be prompted to add to Office 365 anyone who has an email address at your domain. If you not have done so, you may also add new users to Office 365 now. One way to add users will be through importing a CSV file with headers and user’s information included under the right headers. Adding users individually through the admin center.

Lastly, a way to add users to Office 365 would be through directory synchronization. The tool used to do a directory synchronization is called Azure Active Directory Connect.

4

Page 9: Skype for Business Online POC

Azure Active Directory ConnectIntegrating your on-premises directories with Azure AD makes your users more productive by providing a common identity for accessing both cloud and on-premises resources. Users and organizations can take advantage of the following:

Users can use a single identity to access on-premises applications and cloud services such as Office 365.

Single tool to provide an easy deployment experience for synchronization and sign-in.

Azure Active Directory Connect is made up of three primary components: the synchronization services, the optional Active Directory Federation Services component, and the monitoring component named Azure AD Connect Health. You can find the download for Azure AD Connect on Microsoft Download Center. Pre-requisites, how to install, customization of Azure AD Connect are all found on the following link:

Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect

IdFix ToolIt is recommended that before you synchronize your directory to Office 365 that you clean up your directory and consolidate your users and organizational units to prevent from synchronizing unnecessary units to Office 365 and Azure Active Directory.

Therefore, it is recommended to use IdFix; identifies errors such as duplicated and formatting problems in your directory before synchronizing to Office 365. Once the errors have been identified, to finish the task, you should be comfortable working with user, group and contact object in Active Directory.

For more information: Install and run the Office 365 IdFix Tool

DNS ManagementLast part of completing your initial process of adding users and domains to your Office 365 tenant is to manage your DNS records through your domain controller or third party host to add the appropriate DNS records to allow Skype for Business Online services to be configured. The following DNS records are required:

SRV records

Type Service ProtocolPort WeightPriority

TTL Name Target

SRV _sip _tls 443 1 100 1 hour<DomainName>

Note The <DomainName> placeholder in this table represents the name of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) domain of your organization, such as yourdomain.com.

For further Office 365 DNS management use: External Domain Name System records for Office 365.

Network PlanningNetwork planning is broken into two sections, one is bandwidth allocation and the other is opening the right ports in your proxy to allow the services to go through for external access.

It is imperative that for network bandwidth planning that we are pro-active versus reactive because that can cause some issues in latency, quality of service and some freezing/ loss of connection.

Bandwidth Calculator Bandwidth calculator is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that calculates WAN bandwidth requirements for a Skype for Business Server and Lync Server deployment based on administrator-specified user profiles and network information, and a Word document user guide that accompanies the spreadsheet.

9

Page 14: Skype for Business Online POC

With the Skype for Business, Bandwidth Calculator, you can enter information about your users and the Skype for Business Server OR Lync Server features that you want to deploy, and the calculator will determine bandwidth requirements for the WAN that connects sites in your deployment. The accompanying User Guide describes the recommended process for estimating your WAN bandwidth needs for Skype for Business OR Lync client real-time traffic. The User Guide will be updated periodically with new information and modifications.

Supported OS: Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP. Requires a full copy of Microsoft Excel 2010 or newer to use the calculator.

Quality of Service (QoS)QoS is a combination of networking technologies that enables organizations to optimize the end-user experience for real time audio and video communications.

QoS is commonly used when network bandwidth is limited (which while implementing means almost always especially for Express Route)

QoS is needed when there is a possibility of network congestion (again almost always)

It’s all about reducing Packet Loss, Latency and Jitter.

10

Page 15: Skype for Business Online POC

Basic concepts of Quality of Service (QoS)/Class of Service (CoS)In IP, Quality of Service (QoS) describes any mechanism that is used to provide priority handling for some packets over others. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) definition, QoS comprises all quality aspects of a connection including delay, loss, signal-to-noise ratio, crosstalk, echo, interrupts, frequency response, loudness levels, and so on. What we refer to as QoS in packet networks is more correctly termed Class of Service (CoS) that focuses on improving performance for delay, jitter and packet loss, but we will continue to use the QoS term as it is more commonly used.

11

Page 16: Skype for Business Online POC

Providing QoS in an IP network calls for two primary components:

The reservation of a defined amount of bandwidth on each link for real-time traffic; if that bandwidth isn't needed for real-time traffic at any time, it can be used for other traffic. The general guidance is that no more than 30% of the capacity of any link should be assigned for voice traffic.

Marking the packets with a priority indicator in the header that tells the switches and routers in the path the priority of the packet that should be assigned.

When a packet is received at a switch or router, it is moved to an output queue for the next leg or hop. There are different output queues for the different priority levels. A switch or router uses an algorithm that services the high priority queue more frequently than the lower priority queues.

The challenge is that there are different QoS techniques that are implemented at Layer 2 (i.e. the Ethernet or Wi-Fi layer) and Layer 3 (i.e. the IP layer). Those different QoS implementations may have to be configured in each switch and router in the network, as well as the interface between your network and the network service provider’s network.

There are two options for how data from the various Skype for Business applications can be mapped to the appropriate classes of service:

End point marking of the traffic using Differentiated Services Control Point (DSCP) Network Access Control List (ACL)-based

End Point Traffic Marking- Differentiated Services Control Point (DSCP)Differentiated Services (DiffServ) is referred to as a “coarse grained” mechanism for classifying and managing network traffic and providing QoS in IP networks. Routers and other devices that implement Layer 3 functions use the DiffServ Control Point (DSCP) to define the packet’s priority. QoS is implemented by inserting a 6-bit DSCP value in the Differentiated Services field (formerly the “Type of Service” field) in the IP header; 6-bits allows for 64 different priority levels. The priority levels are typically defined as shown here.
