    Elections, purdah and untruths (lies)

I am a candidate in the local elections for

Croydon Council but that is irrelevant to

Shirley Life. I write about issues in the

ward because I want value for my

money from Croydon Council andmention facts that would be, otherwise,

covered up in a web of lies.

    Two local Residents Associations have

their AGMs in April and May. Both claim

to be non politically aligned. Both allow

incumbent politicians to harangue the residents, one even during purdah.

Both no longer represent the area but a maniple of residents who havedifficulty in accepting that the fabric of Shirley has changed. Indeed,

some are emigrating to the countryside and fleeing the madding crowd.

    I fear the incinerator more.

    Smart meters

EON is our double fuel provider and I received misleading

correspondence from them regarding the installation ofSmart Meters.

Please read the article on page 30.Are volunteers drying up?

Last month, I picked up an April Events Guide at Shirley Library. It looked

sleek and I immediately wondered how much it cost to produce and if it was

going to be available each month

It is with great sadness that I noticed, this month, that the Teen Reading

Group is no longer run at the Library. Lack of volunteers or no Teens?

    Indeed, the list of

    activities seems to be

    getting shorter each

    month. Then I read that

    they were looking for an

    experienced volunteer

    to deliver free ICT

    sessions to their

    customers.Are volunteers, by any

    chance, drying up?

    Cost of incompetence

Pavements in Shirley are truly becoming

hazardous as the roots of badly chosen

trees are breaking through the asphalt or

    diving under houses.

The example on the left is to be found in

Oak Avenue whilst the one on the right is

    in Langland Gardens.

The ridiculous sum that did not

    change our lives

    could have been

    spent on making

    our pavements

    safe for all.

Landscaping in and around parking lots and pavement improvesappearance, prevents soil erosion, and reduces carbon dioxide

through photosynthesis. Planted areas also reduce storm water

drainage problems, reduce the detrimental effects of wind and noise,

and enhance human comfort by providing heat-reducing shade.

When municipal compaction specifications are adhered to, the

resulting soil mix under the pavement is generally impenetrable to roots

due to mechanical impediment. It also limits root growth due to lowavailable oxygen.

Trees planted near pavement often suffer due to root damage and soil

volume restriction. The lateral growth of shallow tree roots causes

sidewalks to crack and heave, creating lips or stub-toe spots

because of uneven displacement of adjoining sections of concrete.

This root v. pavement conflict is a big problem in urban forestry.

Removal and/or replacement of trees and repair of paved surfaces can

strain limited municipal funds. In addition, Councils may be found liable

in damage suits where injuries occur as a result of pavement hazards.

Selecting appropriate trees for paved areas is challenging. Paved

    surfaces are engineered to quickly

shed water, often in directions that

    either deprive trees of adequate

soil moisture or leave their roots

    submerged in excess water.

    Limited soil volumes confine roots,

    restricting root growth, reducing

    anchorage, and often supplying

    inadequate moisture and

    nutrients. The stress of

    compaction and low soil fertility,

coupled with other physical, environmental and human forces acting

against trees makes parking lots and paved areas unfriendly to trees. These factors combined make 7 to 10 years the average life

    expectancy of most urban trees.

Many Councils publish exhaustive guidelines regarding trees.

Hounslow Council has even a useful Frequently Asked Questions

on its website. Croydon Council is more interested in promoting its

    useless app or harvesting our

details via My Account. Theyare also happy to provide

    names of tree contractors to

work on our trees and to tell us

    how to dispose of waste

    timber.

    Croydon Council is philistine to

the core: do not expect anyuser friendly advice from them.

    Wirral Council has an

    interesting Adopt a Tree

    scheme: The Council receives

    many requests from residents,

asking for tree planting in their

area. In response to thisdemand the Council has

    introduced an Adopt a Tree

but they also provide a healthier environment by filtering particular

pollutants. The scheme is open to any individual, community group or

    Sloppiness

    Should our Council not

    parts of Shirley have

    already got to negotiate

    uneven and poorly

    maintained pavements.

    They do not need them

    covered in muck too!

I did not have to go far

to take the picture on the left. It was pretty disgusting and there were

a few (three) big slugs wriggling around the slimy mess. With warmer

weather on the horizon, the food buckets will start stinking once more.

Contractors seem to like throwing them back and, in doing so, they

damage the flimsy closing mechanism. Moreover, some people seem

to have stopped using bags (they are expensive and they leak) and

place food directly in the buckets. We will soon have an outbreak ofcholera or some other infectious disease because the rotting food is

spilled around. What about cats, dogs, rats and foxes? Editor

Who can request a tree? The scheme is open to any individual, community group or business, who wishes to plant a tree inthe verge outside their property.

Can I choose the variety of tree?Yes, you can choose from 7 varieties of tree under the Council's Adopt-a-Tree scheme:1. Alder (alder glutinosa); 2. Cherry (prunus avium); 3. Field Maple (acer campestre);4. Rowan (sorbus aucuparia); 5. Common Beech (fagus sylvatica); 5. Hornbeam (carpinus betulus); or7. Whitebeam (sorbus aria).

What does it cost to Adopt-a-Tree?Trees cost either 153.00 inc. VAT, or 167.50 inc. VAT, depending on preferred tree variety. This includes: Supply & plant 1 tree, installing stakes, ties, & watering system (if required) + VAT.

    Civil disobedience is a

    public act of willfully

    disobeying the lawand/or the commands

    of a figure in authority,

    in order to make a

    political statement.

    One can expect to be

    to be arrested, and,

    often, charged withcrimes such as

trespass, failure to disperse, or failure to obey an officer of the law. Civil

disobedience is generally understood to be nonviolent.

I was taught to respect authority and consider myself a law-abiding

citizen. However, I was also taught ethical and inalienable principles:

one should be able to enjoy freedom of speech and movement, one

should respect oneself and others, one should act with charity andcompassion, one should refuse all acts of physical and mental

violence. It is fair to say that I believe in the concepts contained in the

10 Commandments. I do not believe, however, in the structures built

around the Commandments by imperfect human being who betrayed

the catholic teaching of Christ, who threw the money changers out of

the Temple. We are in desperate need of another cleansing of the

Temple in a society where so many are starved and exploited.

Subservience is the state of being submissive. An example of

subservience is always agreeing to everything you are told and never

    A real story

    Juicing

Russell introduced me to the concept of juicing a

few years ago but I never seemed to take it up

although I was fully aware that raw juice is teeming

with micronutrients that many people are lacking.Recently, I started eating broccoli raw and now I

like them so much that I would not cook them any

longer. Then, I read an article on juicing by Dr. Mercola and decided to

have a go at it, after my morning espresso.

Dr. Mercola said: When you drink fresh-made green juice, it is almost like

receiving an intravenous infusion of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes

because they go straight into your system without having to be brokendown. Drinking your juice first thing in the morning can give you a natural

energy boost without resorting to stimulants like coffee. Since the juice is

already in an easily digestible form, it can help revitalize your energy levels

within as little as 20 minutes and this is only the beginning of its benefits.Juicing and juice cleanses are big business in the States but it will take

some time for them to be popular in the UK. I agree with Dr. Mercola

when he states that: Further, you neednt spend hundreds of dollars on

a fancy juice cleanse its easy to make your own juice at home for afraction of that cost, and its going to be fresher, too. My philosophy

regarding juicing is to view it as a regular part of your diet, not just a fad

that you engage in once or twice a year. Drinking green juice every day

is going to give you far more benefits than a sporadic three-day cleanse

will. Kids, too, can enjoy vegetable juice on a daily basis, either as a

beverage with a meal or as a snack (ideally along with a source of

healthful fat to ensure all those fat-soluble nutrients get absorbed).

    Reasons to take up juicing

Juicing helps you absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. It will

help to pre-digest them for us, so we will receive most of the

nutrition, rather than having it go down the toilet.

Juicing allows us to consume a healthier amount of vegetables in an

efficient manner. The health watchdog now recommends that we get

ten servings of vegetables and fruits per day and only a tiny minority

actually gets that. Juicing is an easy way to guarantee that we willreach our daily target for vegetables.

What type of juicer works best?

    Dr. Mercola recommends his own:http://products.mercola.com/juicer/.

Russell bought a centrifugal Champion juicer and is happy with it.

    A few tips about juicing

1 Use pesticide free vegetables and choose organic whenever possible. However, some vegetables are worse than others: celery, spinach,

kale, collard greens, lettuce, carrots and cucumber (not as bad if you

    peel it).

2 Using 14 to 12 lemon or lime, you can start experimenting with the

bitterer greens early on as the lemon and lime effectively counter their

bitterness. It is FAR better to use lemon or limes than carrots, beets or

apples, which have far more fructose than lemons or limes.

3 Start out juicing celery, fennel and cucumbers.4 When you've got used to juicing, start adding red leaf lettuce, green leaf

lettuce, romaine lettuce, endive escarole, spinach and cabbage. Note

that cabbage juice is one of the most healing nutrients for ulcer repair

as it is a huge source of vitamin U.

5You can then move on to adding herbs to your juicing. Herbs also make

wonderful combinations, and parsley and cilantro work exceptionally

    well.

6 Kale, collard greens, dandelion, greens mustard greens (bitter) are

bitter: start with smaller leaves at a time and balance it out with lime

or lemon and fresh ginger for an added kick and/or some cranberries.

7 Drink your vegetable juice right away, or store it very carefully.

Vegetable juice is HIGHLY perishable so it's best to drink all of your

juice immediately. Most people juice in the morning, but if that does not

work out well for your schedule, please feel free to choose whatever

meal works best for your lifestyle.8 Clean your juicer properly. If you buy a high-quality juicer, the whole

process should only take about 5 minutes. A toothbrush works well on

the metal grater. Whatever you do, you need to clean your juicer

immediately after you juice to prevent any remnants from

contaminating the juicer with mould growth.

9 Please note that vegetable juice is not a complete meal: it has

very little protein and virtually no fat so, by itself, it is not a

complete food. It really should be used in addition to your regularmeals not in place of it.

Civis Romanus SumWhat does it mean? The literal

translation from Latin means I am a

Roman Citizen but there is more to

it. When the Roman Empire covered

most of the known world in 117 AD, a

    Roman citizen could claim the

    following :

    ius suffragiorum: the right to vote in the Roman assemblies;

    ius honorum: the right to stand for civil or public office;

ius commercii: the right to make legal contracts and to hold

    property as a Roman citizen.

ius gentium: the legal recognition, developed in the 3rd century BC,of the growing international scope of Roman affairs, and the need

for Roman law to deal with situations between Roman citizens and

foreign persons. The jus gentium was therefore a Roman legal

codification of the widely accepted international law of the time,

and was based on highly developed commercial law of the Greek

city-states and of other maritime powers. The rights afforded by

the jus gentium were considered to be held by all persons; it is thusa concept of human rights rather than rights attached to citizenship.

ius connubii: the right to have a lawful marriage with a Roman

citizen, to have the legal rights of the pater familias over the family,

and to have the children of any such marriage be counted as

    Roman citizens.

ius migrationis: the right to preserve one's level of citizenship upon

relocation to a polis of comparable status. For example, membersof the cives romanimaintained their full civitas when they migrated

to a Roman colony with full rights under the law: a colonia civium

Romanorum. A civis Romanus had the right of immunity from some

taxes and other legal obligations, especially local rules and

    regulations.

    other iures (rights):

I The right to sue in the courts and the right to be sued.

II The right to have a legal trial (to appear before a proper court andto defend oneself).

    26

  • 8/12/2019 SL April2014

    27/5827

III The right to appeal from the decisions of magistrates and to appealthe lower court decisions.

IVA Roman citizen could not be tortured or whipped, nor could hereceive the death penalty, unless he was found guilty of treason. If

accused of treason, a Roman citizen had the right to be tried in

Rome, and even if sentenced to death, no Roman citizen could be

sentenced to die on the cross. In the New Testament, Paul the

Apostle, when imprisoned and on trial, claimed his right as a

Roman citizen to be tried before the Caesar: the judicial process

had to be suspended until he was brought to Rome.

V Only a citizen could use the praenomen-nomen-cognomen set ofnames.

Possession of citizenship was desired by Romans and barbari alike.Citizens did have responsibilities: they were taxed, and the men

needed to complete a term of military service. Only Roman citizens

could enlist in the Roman legions. Non-citizens joined the Auxilia and

gained citizenship through service. It was an honour

It is interesting to note that Lord Palmerston, in his speech in the

Houses of Parliament on 25 June 1850, said: as the Roman in days

of old, held himself free from indignity, when he could say CivisRomanus sum [I am a Roman citizen]; so also a British subject, in

whatever land he may be, shall feel confident that the watchful eye

and the strong arm of England will protect him against injustice and

    wrong.

In 1963, American president John F. Kennedy said: Two thousand

years ago, the proudest boast was civis romanus sum. Today, in the

world of freedom, the proudest boast is Ich bin ein Berliner.

I dedicate this article to those politicians

who incite hatred and nurture ignorance

    (aka selected and partisan knowledge)

amongst people. They think that they

know what they are doing but the world is

changing around us and they might get

egg on their faces soon, probably earlier

    than expected. Marzia

    Smart Meters are not mandatory

I was flabbergasted to receive an email from my dual fuel provider

asking for feedback on the process for Smart meter installation. EON

seems to believe that all their clients are happy to have the

contraptions in their homes andYourSay is about the times when is

more convenient for them to be installed.

There was not a single mention that one does not have to accept

them. One has got to go to the frequently asked questions to find it:

    https://www.gov.uk/smart-meters-how-they-work

Smart meters bring a wide range of benefits. For example: Smart meters give you near real time information on energy use

    expressed in pounds and pence

You will be able to better manage your energy use, save money and

    reduce emissions

Smart meters will bring an end to estimated billing - you will only be

billed for the energy you actually use, helping you budget better

Easier switching - smoother and faster to switch suppliers to get the

    best deals

    How they work

Most of the smart meters that are being installed today use mobile

phone-type signals to send meter readings to your energy company,

and other wireless technologies to send information to the in-home

display. However, there are a number of other technologies available.

Smart meters will be rolled out as standard across the country by 2020.But there will not be a legal obligation on individuals to have one.

    Shoes or no shoes?

I grew up in a house with marble floors, regularly washed once a day

or more when accidents happened. In winter, we would take off our

shoes and use warm slippers. In summer, we would probably keep

our sandals on during the day and change into slippers before goinginto the bedroom. Nobody would go around bare footed in the house

which was considered pretty uncouth. Things changed when I moved

to the UK where carpets were in every room of the house. I dislike

carpets so much that I removed them every time I move. We have

tiles and wood on the floor because they are easier to keep clean and

    not germ incubators.

I read the article below in The Daily Alternative and thought it wasquite good.

While millions of Americans have adopted the habit of removing their

footwear before entering their home, millions of others still go from

the backdoor to the sofa without ever removing their shoes. Although

much of taking your shoes off is a cultural practice, it is one well worth

considering when you look at it from a health perspective.

Travelling ToxinsThe first proof that pesticides can be tracked into a home on shoes

was released by the EPA. According to the study, pesticides such as

2, 4-D, can remain on a lawn for up to a week after application. Both

animals as well as humans can track these chemicals into a home.

Another study showed that 98 percent of all lead dust found within a

home is tracked in from the outside.

GermsThose that live in heavily populated urban areas should beware of

things that they pick up from sidewalks, escalators and stairways. It

is possible to bring in everything from animal waste to human body

fluids on the soles of your shoes.

    Comfort

Depending on your shoes and how much standing or walking you do

daily, your feet need a rest at the end of the day. Taking off your shoesand slipping into a comfy pair of house slippers lets your feet breathe

and allows you to stretch and massage your tired toes.

    Dirt

Who wants a house full of dirt? Although the invention of paved roads

did away with the traditional boot scrapers at the front and back doors

of homes, dirt still finds its way into the crevices of shoes and into

    your home.

How to politely ask a visitor in your home to take their shoes

    off

Asking someone who may not be accustomed to taking off their

shoes at the door to do so in your home can be a little tricky to

navigate. The best thing to do is to create a neat area for shoes at the

    door.

This will send a signal to your house guest that we take our shoes off

in our home. If this is too subtle you may try offering your guest a pair

of house slippers, noting that he or she will be more comfortable.

This is a common practice in Asian countries where houseguests are

routinely offered a pair of cozy slippers when they arrive at someones

home. If your houseguest still seems reticent to comply, you may have

to ask a little more firmly noting that, we like to take our shoes off in

our house, we hope you are ok with this.

Once people become aware of your house policy, most are happy tooblige. If you are hosting a party or having a lot of people to your

home, it may be a good idea to let people know in advance to bring

    some slippers.

Changes are looming in our households. Soon there will be no more

shoes: I will get slippers for friends and keep emergency slippers for

visitors. I do not want to see holey socks and tights, horrible toenails,

claw toes, verrucas, athletes foot, fallen arches, cracked heels.

I always carry my foldable slippers in my big handbag. I bought them

at Macys many years ago. They are washable and light. They have

come with me all over the world and walked in

houses and mosques. I have now ordered one

pair of rollable shoes on Amazon but I will buy

ballerine in Italy when I go next, better choice

and better prices. Not sure what to do withmale guests, yet but a solution will be found.

Police MattersThe Public Meeting on Wednesday 9 April

at Shirley Methodist Church in Eldon

Avenue was poorly attended. This was

probably due to the fact that the meeting

had not been widely advertised and many

residents are not online. It was suggested

that posters were displayed in local shops

and pharmacies well in advance of next

Public Meeting on 8 July 2014.

Under the new Policing Model, the Ward

Panel meetings are now public. It is therefore important that they takeplace in appropriate venues where all members of the public may feel

at ease. All places of worship are not appropriate in a diverse

community. Shirley has a Community Centre that can accommodate

up to 150 people and is a neutral venue used by people from all

    backgrounds.

We hope that the Teams website will be updated soon because

speeding in Orchard Way was accepted as a priority. The Shirley Safer Neighbourhood Team produces a monthly newsletter

to give the public updates about crime and policing information. Let

them know if you wish to receive it.

If you have pressing concerns or have any information you would like

to pass on, contact the Team on [email protected]. Do not

keep your fears to yourself. They are there to help you.

They are now based at Addington Police Station, Addington Village

    Petition

Shirley has no car parks and red lines

    make motorists lives a misery.

Furthermore, TfL, in its wisdom and

    without consultation, has set different

times for parking in Wickham Road.

30 minutes are not sufficient to shop,

have a cup of coffee or a hair cut.

As a result, shopkeepers complain that

May 2014 How to get perfect pictures for Fathers Day.

Fathers Day is almost upon us Sunday 15 June 2014.

At Picture Partnership we know how important every minute iswith your children, and what better way to capture those precious

father and child moments than with a set of personal

photographs. Through the years we have had the pleasure of

photographing many fathers in our studio and even some famous

Dads at major events. We've photographed Tony Blair, David

Beckham and even Prince William the Duke of Cambridge! We

hope that Prince George didnt forget to find something to markhis first Fathers Day, - perhaps a sneaky present from Australia?

    - or maybe Prince William himself is arranging a special

photoshoot of his family to present to his own Dad.

If you wish us to record these for you professionally, our studio

portrait sessions start from just 35.00 including one 8"x 6" print.

    photographs :-

Give Dad the camera. In our experience most young children are

notoriously hard to take photos of, the more you want them to sit

still, pose and smile, the more they resist and play up. But if Dad

starts playing with the camera, pressing all the buttons, maybe

even doing a silly selfie, watch how quickly the children will wantto be involved in the fun too, and maybe even relax and smile a

    READING

GROUPFOR ADULTSThe group will discuss The Kashmir Shawl by Rosie Thomas on the second or

third Thursday of the month from 6 to 7pm.

I loved this story, beautifully unfolding in two different eras: the 1930s and '40s,then in the present. When three adult children close down the family home in

rural Wales after the death of their widowed father, they discover a beautiful

shawl that had belonged to their mother's mother. The younger daughter, who

is between jobs, decides to travel to Kashmir in an attempt to unravel the history

and the mystery of the beautiful and delicate shawl. Interspersed in this story

is a parallel tale of the lives of her grandmother and grandfather, who had been

Welsh missionaries in Kashmir in the 30s and 40s.

It is a beautiful story, but what drew me in immediately when I started to read

was Ms. Thomas' magnificent use of the English language in her prose. I am

reminded of a modern day Charles Dickens. Her descriptions are impeccably

worked out to invoke the intended response so wonderfully, I hated to put the

book down. i was transfixed to this Asian geography and culture. I could smell

the aromas of the scenery. I could feel the heat and the cold with the clarity of

feeling a part of the scene.

    About hair

Sasha is indeed passionate about hair and is

always looking for products that work for her

clientele. Over a year ago, she introduced me

to Tangle Teezer, created by Shaun Pulfrey. Ibought two for myself and one each for my

sister-in-law and my nieces. They are

absolutely magic and you can also get a

compact version perfect for travelling or a

funky Magic Flowerpot Popping Pink or Purple

for the younger ones. It is a good present to

give and it is one of the few things still Proudly

    made in Great Britain!

I have just discovered the story behind the

Tangle Teezer. Pulfrey, a former hairdresser was turned down for

funding by Dragons Dens business gurus in 2007.

Instead of becoming disheartened, he used his appearance on the

show to kick-start his business and with the success of his

hairdressing product, the Tangle Teezer, Shaun has had the last laugh.

Im a hair colourist by trade and, prior to setting up Tangle Teezer, Imade a very successful and exciting living out of it. [Running my own

business] has always been a passion of mine. Ive actually never had

the desire to run my own salon, but

Ive brought the salon mindset into

    creating my business for Tangle

    Teezer.

Finding that tangles were always aproblem with freshly coloured wet

hair, in the Tangle Teezer, Shaun

developed a way to tackle them by

    using conventional tools a brush

    and comb in an unconventional

    way. In December 2013, Tangle

Teezer charts number 19 in The

Sunday Times Fast Track 100 - the 19th fastest growing company in

    the UK.Marzia
