SERVICE-LEARNING ORIENTATION
Spring 2015
Through HWS Compass students are encourage to explore the many facets of service to society.
A three tiered program, COMPASS provides experiences:
Community Service (short term) Civic Engagement (longer term) Civic Leadership (longer term +) Leading to a life of Engaged Citizenship.

WHAT IS SERVICE-LEARNING?
• According to the 2010 census, the City of Geneva had a population of 13,261.
• The federal poverty level for a family of 4 is $23,550.
• The median income in Geneva is $45,190 which is $12,00 below the county average

Click on Organizations in the gray bar.
Go to hws.collegiatelink.net and log in.
Click on “S” in the Directory on the left hand side.
Click on Service-Learning in the list that appears + JOIN ORGANIZATION
Go to the “Forms” on the left hand side.
DO NOT FORGET TO HIT “SUBMIT FOR APPROVAL”
Click on Service-Learning in blue and start filling out your form.
FIND YOUR CLASS AND JOIN. THIS WILL BE IN YOUR SHORTCUTS FOR YOU TO USE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEMESTER.
• Go to “My Shortcuts” and find your class.
• Click on Service Hours• Add Service Hours
Always add your hours to your class, not “Service-Learning” in Shortcuts.
SERVICE-LEARNING CONTRACT
The Service-Learning Colleague will be responsible for communication between the community partner(s), The Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CCESL), and the faculty member. The Colleague’s ability to serve as a liaison is key to ensuring students have a successful service-learning experience.
Service-Learning Colleagues: Support them in making connections with their site partners Discuss their service-learning experience Encourage them to talk directly to the professor about their experience Discuss any issues they might be having and how they can be handled Assist them in making their experience more meaningful
