Cell Sste"s
1 Cell% a Cell Drive #ushing% a 4aster #ushing and a Rotar Table rotate the drill string
and bit on so"e rigs. The Cell is a heav tubular devi,e+ it usuall has either 5 or -
sides% that is it either has a s;uare or he>agonal ,ross se,tion. S;uare kells are less
e>$ensive than he>agonal ones% but the he> kells are stronger. So rigs drilling dee$
holes o!ten use the". <hether !our or si>0sided% ,rew "e"bers atta,h or "ake u$ the
Cell to the to$ =oint o! $i$e in the drill string.
Cell O$eration
The Cell% !our0sided or s;uare as an e>a"$le% "oves through a s;uare o$ening in the
Cell drive bushing. The Cell drive bushing "eets with the "aster bushing% whi,h the
rotar table turns. This rotates the entire drill string and atta,hed bit. The Cell "oves
down as the hole dee$ens.

6<DP (o!ten ,alled heav weight drill $i$e) is "ade u$ between the drill $i$e and drill
,ollars. 6<DP is used to $rovide a transition between the li"ber drill $i$e and the drill
,ollars% whi,h are ;uite sti!!. The use a 6<DP redu,es the stress that sti!! drill ,ollars
$ut on the drill string% as a result% 6<DP redu,es !atigue on the regular drill $i$e. It also
hel$s kee$ the drill $i$e in tension and "a so"eti"es $rovide weight on the bit% =ust as
drill ,ollars do% es$e,iall in dire,tional drilling. 6eav walled DP (or 6eav weight DP)
has thi,ker walls and longer tool =oints than standard DP. The longer tool =oints redu,e

S$iral 6<DP
S$iral 6<DP is another t$e o! 6<DP. S$iral 6<DP has a s$iral groove in the $i$e?s
bod. Regular 6<DP has no groove% but s$iral 6<DP has no wear $ad. <hen s$iral6<DP ,onta,ts the side o! the hole% onl a s"all $art o! the $i$e bod a,tuall tou,hes it.
