What’s the problem?• Hospitals - 8,000 people die each year as a result of hospitals errors, 9 times the national road toll.

Adverse events account for 6.88% of hospital stays.

• Doctors - Complaints against doctors are highly skewed, with 3% accounting for 49% of complaints and 1%

account for 1/4 of complaints. Australians receive ‘appropriate medical care’ in only 57% of consultations.

The patient complaints process is dysfunctional. Media stories of severe problems such as drug addicted

and grossly negligent doctors inevitably reveal years of unprofessional behaviour covered up by hospitals,

bureaucracies and professional bodies

• Medical records - Half of hospital discharge summaries omit significant conditions and 1 in 10 have the

wrong diagnosis. 1 in 3 drug prescriptions contains an error. Healthcare has always been 30 years behind in

adopting technology compared to other industries. The PCEHR has cost 1 billion dollars, is user-unfriendly

and unpopular with doctors. Most patients have never seen their e-health records, let alone checked them

for errors or updated their information.

• Patients - 50% of patients do not complete their prescribed medical treatments. Community health services

are fragmented and underfunded, forcing many sick people into crowded emergency departments. Patients

currently have no idea what ‘should’ happen during their treatments. Patients are not able to access to

information on the safety records of different healthcare providers. They are not involved in their treatment

planning. There are no up-front quotes for private health services. Australia now rates third in the world for

out of pocket medical costs.

• Power - Healthcare is the largest employer in Australia. The annual health budget is 140 billion a year.

Health is a major political football, with Liberals pushing privatisation and Labor pushing public hospitals.

Both sides refuse to accept problems and support reform. The health unions and professional associations

are the most powerful employee groups in Australia. Health funding is divided down State and Federal lines,

with continuous battles to avoid costly patients. This is leading to ‘bed block’ and overuse of acute beds for

sub-acute elderly patients. Over servicing is a billion dollar problem. There are kick back deals between all

the major health providers. ‘Fee for service’ is costly and inefficient.

Healthcare is a monster industry, devouring patient’s

health and societies resources while providing poor

outcomes

Page 4: Slideshow in pp

What’s the solution?

• Use ‘disruptive innovation’ to turn an outdated,

unproductive and over-priced industry on its head.

• Put the ‘consumer’ first, wealthy corporations and

powerful unions last.

• Crowd source vital information from the people who

have it, and share it with those who need it

Community database

• Wikihospitals concept is an on-line relational

database

• Clinical staff can review and update Best Practice

Clinical Guidelines. Health academics can review

and update hospitals cost and quality ratings. The

health IT startup community can review the latest

apps, smart devices, home-hospital services and

cloud-based medical records software

• The database feeds back to the patients via an easy

to use app

The patient sees…

• Where to go for the highest quality and lowest cost

hospitals, clinics and nursing homes

• What are the ‘guidelines’ that health professionals should

be following with their treatments

• Health IT services that can help with disease

management

• How to manage your ‘health budget’

The contributors

see…

• Their particular database broken into major sections

i.e. apps, smart devices, cloud-based medical records

• Other information already added i.e. new app, not

rated yet

• Stay in touch with others in their field, share ideas

• Accessing queries

Put the patient in the drivers

seat

• Forget passively accepting the GP’s referrals. Learn about how

different health services operate and pick one that suits you.

• Understand what level of service to expect and how treatments

work. Learn about your disease and why it’s important to

complete treatments. Rate your health service. Your feedback

will help other patients benefit from your experiences.

• See a doctor via teleconferencing when it suits you. Leave

hospitals behind with acute home nursing services. Check your

vital signs, ECG, blood sugars and sync all the data to your

doctor’s computer.

Conquer the world!

• Get this product right and take it to America.

• 300 million Americans are DESPERATE to get

cheaper, better quality healthcare. Medical bills

are the major cause of personal bankruptcy.

Private insurance makes little difference to

people’s out of pocket costs. 40% of the US health

budget is wasted on fraud, over servicing,

unnecessary tests.

• The future is coming…
