A Challenge

Challenge us. You want a transformer with an ‘impossible’ combination of features: > smaller and lighter for a given power rating; > capable of handling severe overloads; > smaller environmental footprint; > safer, more reliable; > requiring less servicing; > with an extended lifetime; > based on tried-and-tested technology; > Meeting the latest IEC technical specifi cations.

CG Power Systems Belgium can meet your challenge. Our SLIM® transformers offer all this — and more.

A Proven Record

Since the SLIM® transformer was launched in 2001 numerous public and private enterprises have installed over 5.400 of these units with an average rating of 2500 kVA (ranging from 250 kVA to 6.5 MVA) in various demanding applications. Rein-forced by the experience gained from these installations, CG Power Systems is now offering the advantages of SLIM® transformers to a broader range of users.

Opening New Vistas

CG Power Systems Belgium SLIM® transformers will bring you benefi ts in applica-tions such as: > Public buildings > Offi ce and residential blocks > Light and heavy industries > PCB replacement > Step-up converter transformers for wind industry (WTGT) > GSU transformers for power generation plants > Marine applications > Track-side units for railways, underground (metro) trains, trams > Hospitals and banks > Road and railway tunnels > Space-saving upgrades (e.g. a 2000 kVA SLIM® can offer the same footprint as a

conventional 1250 kVA unit) > Installations with demanding thermal, electrical or loading conditions where dry-

type and conventional immersed transformers show a higher tendency to fail.

The Technology that Makes It Possible

CG Power Systems Belgium is a leader in transformer design. DuPont enjoys an unmatched reputation for developing synthetic insulating materials for high-performance applications. NOMEX® fi bre, launched by DuPont more than 40 years ago, retains its performance characteristics up to 220 °C, and offers a unique balance of electrical, thermal, physical and chemical properties. When the former Pauwels and DuPont pooled their skills and expertise for liquid-fi lled distribution and medium-power transformers, the SLIM® was born. The SLIM® uses proven technologies in an innovative design, combining NOMEX® thermal insulating technology with a Class K (fi re-point >300 °C)(1) dielectric fl uid such as silicone fl uid (IEC 60826) or synthetic ester (IEC 61099). The result is a compact, reliable, transformer with high overload capacity. The former Pauwels and now CG Power Systems has been using NOMEX® in dry-type transformers for 20 years and since the 1990s also in mobile substation and traction transformers. CG today offers transformers in the SLIM® range from 100 kVA to 10 MVA, with voltages of 390 V to 66 kV, for 50 Hz or 60 Hz systems. Designs are always tailored to the customer’s requirements.

Value in Use

Size and weight: When the wind industry wanted higher-rated, higher-voltage transformers, conventional units that were bigger and heavier proved unsuitable. Their size could not match the limited width of the tower access door, and their weight was a handicap. Back in 2001, the former Pauwels broke into the wind turbine market with a 770 mm-wide 2 MVA/20 kV transformer that fi tted through a 800 mm wide door — a fi rst at that time. With added experience since then, CG Power Systems today builds 2.5 MVA/33 kV units that are only 680 mm wide. Typi-cally, a SLIM® transformer is about 30 % smaller and lighter than a conventional model with the same power rating.

* 630 SLIM® respects losses and noise of a conventional immersed 630 kVA and dimensions of 400 kVA.

SLIM® transformers are the ideal alternative for dry-type and cast resin transformers. Dimensions and load losses can be matched while no-load losses, noise and performance under transient volt-ages, overloads or severe climatic conditions are superior.

Overload Capability, Reduced Maintenance: To achieve higher reliability, RATP, the Paris public transport authority, has decided to install some 100 SLIM® transformers (3.3 MVA, 4.4 MVA and 5.5 MVA) to handle bigger, more frequent overloads, with units that fi t the limited space in track-side substations. As these SLIM® units need no forced cooling, RATP has been able to eliminate fans, saving energy, reducing maintenance and noise.

Safety and Reliability: A zero-fault electrical system is a must on the Aiguille du Midi platform. At 3842 metres in the French Alps, transformers are subject to frequent, violent lightning strikes. That is why the Compagnie du Mont Blanc has chosen a 250 kVA SLIM® rather than a dry-type transformer to replace a PCB-fi lled transformer on the mountain-top site. In Monaco, SLIM® transformers were installed in buildings after the local fi re authorities had been convinced of their excellent fi re resistance.

Compact and Economical: several industries have chosen the SLIM® alterna-tive to replace older transformers. Their compactness allows a power upgrade while the new optimised design offers reduced losses and no maintenance. In short: “more value for your money”.

Never a Simple Choice…

Compactness is the prime characteristic of SLIM® transformers. But specifi ers do not base their choice of a transformer on a single criterion. Look at the overall combination of what the SLIM® range offers:

Greater reliability, more fl exibility: NOMEX® insulation withstands up to 220 °C with negligible thermal aging and degradation. This means extra capacity to handle peak loads, high ambient temperatures, current harmonics and other emergency situations. NOMEX® thermal insulating technology boosts the thermal constraint of transformers by up to 50 % over conventional transformers. The SLIM® design offers fl exibility when upgrading existing installations. Cost savings in peripheral equipment can result from the use of existing connections, foundations and protection.

Safety: The inherent self-extinguishing characteristics of NOMEX®(2) plus a Class K3 (fi re-point >300 °C and net calorifi c value <32 MJ/kg) dielectric fl uid results in high fi re safety, thanks to reduced fi re load and limited fl ammability. This translates into savings on safety-related protective equipment and insurance premiums.

Respect for the environment: Pauwels’ advanced design uses fewer natural resources (copper, steel, up to 30 % less coolant). At the end of a transformer’s lifetime, material disposal is not a problem: Class K3 dielectric fl uid is environ-mentally friendly, non-toxic and fully recyclable; steel and copper can easily be recovered (thanks to the non-cast windings); NOMEX® paper and pressboard can be handled as conventional non-hazardous waste.

Reduced no-load losses: The SLIM® design’s no-load losses are typically about one-half of the no-load losses of dry-type transformers. With an electricity price of 0.038 EUR/kWh, 8760 hours a year and a 30-year life expectancy, a 1000 kVA SLIM® transformer saves about half of its own initial purchase price, thanks to its 40 % lower no-load losses (1.5 kW against 2.3 kW).

Meeting specifi cations: Besides exceeding conventional specifi cations, SLIM® transformers also meet the requirements of the new IEC 60076-14(3).

(2) Fire behaviour of NOMEX® is classifi ed M1/F1 according to NF F 16-101, Class 94 V-0 according to UL, and Class 1 according to CSE RF2/75A.

(3) IEC 60076-14 (2004): “Design and application of liquid-immersed power transformers using high-temperature insulation materials.”
