Understanding “Bill’s Story” By George S.

We know that this story is about William ‘Bill’ Griffith Wilson (November 26, 1895 – January 24, 1971), but it was intended to be “The story of an alcoholic named Bill”. There is a huge difference in how this would have been written had the intent been to write a biography of William ‘Bill’ Griffith Wilson. It would have included where he was born, raised, family, wedding details, etc. Finishing up on the thought where we left off on May 23, 2019; Bill is describing his ‘acceptance experience’ and how he overcame his aversion to religious solutions to alcoholism via his encounter with Ebbie! Begin the May 30, 2019, presentation: 1) Bill then continues in sync with the manuscript: “THUS WAS I CONVINCED THAT GOD IS CONCERNED WITH US HUMANS WHEN WE WANT HIM ENOUGH. AT LONG LAST I SAW, I FELT, I BELIEVED. SCALES OF PRIDE AND PREJUDICE FELL FROM MY EYES. A NEW WORLD CAME INTO VIEW.” Continued on page: 7

Meetings, meetings, meetings, they’re all over the valley. In fact, there are over 260 meetings listed in the TVICO meeting schedule. Of these 260+ meetings there are varied types of meetings. Let’s take a look and see what the different formats are. The Discussion meeting is the most prevalent format. Alcoholics love to talk; we have opinions on everything. Even in this simple format there are variations. The “call on” meeting where the leader calls on people. A good leader will call on a vari-ety of members, both men and women and newbies and long timers. When the meet-ing goes off topic the leader will call on someone who will bring it back to the topic of alcoholism. The leader usually doesn't share after the meetings topic has been cho-sen. The leader may expound on the chosen topic to bring clarity and relevance. But after that the leader is usually quiet and calls on members. Done correctly this format will bring varied experience, strength, and hope. Calling on new members lets them be “part of”. The benefit of this is we get to learn the newcomer’s names. Calling on long-timers lets them talk. Having a mixture of men and women brings a nice bal-ance to the meeting. The Speaker meeting format focuses on individual stories. Many members enjoy speaker meetings because they won’t get called on. Many people like to bring family or friends to Speaker meetings as a way to let them hear the message of Alcoholics Anonymous. The most established speaker meeting is the “Treasure Valley Birthday Speakers Meeting” at 7:30 Saturday night at St Stephens Episcopal church located at 2206 N Cole Road in Boise. Many groups that meet daily devote 1 of their daily meetings to a speaker meeting. My home group, Attitude Adjustment 7 AM at 1747 S. Broadway Boise, has a speaker meeting every Wednesday morning. Speaker meetings can help you get to know people. Listening to people share as a speaker can give you glimpse of their life, struggles, and successes. The Book Study meeting. I always hear new things from the Big Book. The 12 X12 is full of infor-mation I seemed to have missed the 3 times I read it. This reaffirms that the Big Book and the 12 X 12 are textbooks meant to be studied throughout our journey of sobriety. They are not just another self-help book. Check out some new meetings. Go to a book study. I now go to speaker meetings, so I get know more about people. I need always remember to put principals before personalities. Their story may not al-ways be inspirational to me but, may be just what someone else needed to hear.

Bill realized and will now convey one of the most important principles of this entire recov-ery concept: This is not an attempt to create or emulate a conversion to a religious sys-tem. Rather, an individual’s recovery will be dependent upon their acceptance that the power that provided this visual evidence of recovery in the messenger; IS willing to be the Power that makes the changes available to you; provided your willingness to follow the pro-cess suggested! 2) As Bill looks back on his life after three years of sobriety and his wholesale effort to get this Alcoholics Anonymous organization up and running with little success; he realizes as he writes the “REAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MY EXPERIENCE IN THE CATHDRAL BURST UPON ME.” This takes us right back to the beginning of the story when he was overwhelmed by the reality of war and had sought refuge at Winchester Cathedral. That “feeling” he had while sitting there and wanting. He remembered that day, now twenty years removed, like it was yesterday! There was a moment when he had asked for help and it had come. He wanted to live and he had! He had wanted to make it home, and he did! He wanted to be with Lois again, and he was! YES! There was a Power greater than him and that Power HAD brought him home! It is the same power that had heard him say, “I can’t go on!” and brought Ebbie back into his life! 3) Bill writes: “For a brief moment, I had needed and wanted God. There had been a hum-ble willingness to have Him with me – and He came. But soon the sense of His presence had been blotted out by worldly clamors, mostly those within myself. And so it had been ever since.” Bill realizes that he had asked to be saved during that day at Winchester Cathedral and WAS! Bill coordinates this with his recent INNER request to be saved from this nightmare of drinking and the same GOD who helped him during WWI, is the same GOD who brought Ebbie with the message of HOPE! And Bill realized looking back; that based on the evidence, there was a God working in his life! To summarize this moment of clarity he writes, “HOW BLIND I HAD BEEN” 4) Page thirteen and fourteen in the book Alcoholics Anonymous is sneaky-brilliant because they outline the 12-step program as would be summarized later in this medical book in the chap-ter: “How It Works”. By 1937, when Bill is writing the manuscript, he and Dr. Bob Smith had already developed the 12 steps. This was done because of Dr. Bob’s insistence on understanding each step of the process that allowed Bill to become sober and, more importantly, lose his craving for alcohol. Those impactful conversations between Bill and Bob in the Summer of 1935, is the lens through which Bill is writing this manuscript and this story of a “drunk named Bill”. 5) After describing the “door” that Ebbie had opened for him which allowed Bill to get past the ‘religious obstacle’ he had fought with for years. Bill now lays out succinctly what happened in December, 1934. He writes: “At the hospital I was separated from alcohol for the last time. Treatment seemed wise, for I showed signs of delirium tremens.” We know that Bill had been on a bend-er of ‘Bathtub Gin” for over a month at this time. But because of the “HOPE” that Ebbie had given Bill, he persuaded his mom, his sister “Dot’s” husband, Dr. Leonard Strong Jr. to put up the $350 for a week’s stay at Towns Hospital. (Would equal $6,661.48 in 2019) Continued On Page: 8

Understanding “Bill’s Story”

Continued from page 7

A quick word about Bill’s mom and his brother in law: Dr. Emily Griffith Wilson - Bill's mother, born 1870; divorced Bill's father when Bill was 11years old; went to osteopathic school in Boston after the divorce; she refused nomination in Who's Who America; eccentric, kept no books, was a guest at the 1955 AA Intentional Con-vention in St. Louis; died wealthy on May 15 1961 at nursing home in Dobbs Ferry, New York, at age 91. She was buried in East Dorset cemetery at the Griffin family plot, her 2nd husband had died June 1936. On APRIL 28, 1989, Dr. Leonard V. Strong Jr., passed away. He was an osteopath doctor who had practiced in Manhattan for more than 30 years. He had retired in 1963. He helped establish Alcoholics Anonymous. It was through Dr. Strong, that Bill Wilson was introduced to an executive of the Rockefeller Foundation, which gave money to establish the Alcoholic Foundation, the forerunner of Alcoholics Anonymous World Service. Dr. Strong was an alumnus of the University of Chicago Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania Osteopath School. He was survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Leonard the 3rd, of San Diego; a sister, Dorothy Zimmer of Rutland, VT; 8 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Alcoholics Anonymous doesn’t exist without these two people! 6) Now Bill gives the “meat” of this whole story of how this ‘drunk named Bill’ recovered! Bill begins with: “There I humbly offered myself to God, as I then understood Him, to do with me as He would. I placed myself unreservedly under His care and direction. I admitted for the first time that of myself I was nothing; that without Him I was lost. I ruthlessly faced my sins and became willing to have my new-found Friend take them away, root and branch. I have not had a drink since. This is an articulation of steps 1, 2, & 3. He admits powerlessness, turns his life over to the care of a Power greater than himself to restore him to sanity, then makes a decision to turn his will and life over to the Power as he “then understood Him”. 7) In this next paragraph, Bill articulates steps 4,5,6,7,8, and 9! If you read too quickly, you’ll miss it! "My schoolmate visited me, and I fully acquainted him with my problems and deficiencies. We made a list of people I had hurt or toward whom I felt resentment. I expressed my entire willing-ness to approach these individuals, admitting my wrong. Never was I to be critical of them. I was to right all such matters to the utmost of my ability.” Let me break this paragraph down: “Schoolmate visited me” = you cannot work step 5 alone. “Acquainted him with my problems” = steps 4 & 5 “ and deficiencies” = steps 6 & 7 “made a list of people I had hurt” = you cannot work step 8 alone. “willingness to approach these individuals” = step 9 “Never was I to be critical of them. I was to right all such matters to the utmost of my ability.” = after talking it over with another person. 8) Between the third and fourth paragraph on page thirteen is where sanity has returned and this will be explained in detail in Chapter 6 titled ‘Into Action’, later on in this medical book! 9) This paragraph is all about the step ten mechanism. Bill summarizes: “I was to test my thinking by the new God-consciousness within. Common sense would thus become uncommon sense. I was to sit quietly when in doubt, asking only for direction and strength to meet my problems as He would have me. Never was I to pray for myself, except as my requests bore on my usefulness to others. Then only might I expect to receive. But that would be in great measure.” After 85 years of experience with the tenth step mechanism, we can report that for those who imple-ment it daily, it works! If you recalibrate every day so as to align yourself with the attributes of the power greater than yourself with intent to help others you will receive “in great measure.” 10) Bill now turns to an eloquent written reference to step 11. Step 11, as we know, is ‘Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.’ I thought I’d re-read the eleventh step because these next two paragraphs make’s much more sense when reading it through this lens. Bill writes: “MY FRIEND PROMISED WHEN THESE THINGS WERE DONE I WOULD ENTER UPON A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH MY CREATOR; (These things are #1) Having completed and im-plemented the mechanisms of the first nine steps to the best of my ability. #2) implemented the daily recalibration mechanism of step 10. And if I had done this; then) THAT I WOULD HAVE THE ELEMENTS OF A WAY OF LIVING WHICH ANSWERED ALL MY PROBLEMS. (Now he is going to explain what the elements are which answer all our prob-lems and came as a result of working the first ten steps. They are) BELIEF IN THE POWER OF GOD, PLUS ENOUGH WILLINGNESS, HONESTY AND HUMILI-TY TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN THE NEW ORDER OF THINGS, (These) WERE THE ES-SENTIAL REQUIREMENTS. (Bill then advises from his 3 and half years of experience that this process is:) SIMPLE, BUT NOT EASY; A PRICE HAD TO BE PAID. IT MEANT DESTRUCTION OF SELF-CENTEREDNESS. I MUST TURN, IN ALL THINGS, TO THE FATHER OF LIGHT WHO PRE-SIDES OVER US ALL.” 11) Now comes a summary of the outcome that Bill believes had oc-curred as a result of working the 12 steps which he knows, will be further explained if the read-er continues reading this new medical book on the diagnosis and protocol for recovery for those suffering from “alcoholic addiction”. (Remember: Alcoholic Addiction is the term used in the Doctors Opinion) The reader is now returned to the scene at Town’s Hospital were Bill has been receiving Hydro therapy, the Belladonna Treatment or puke and purge treatment which lasted 50 hours, and was now resting in his hospital room after Ebbie Thacher had visited him again and left. Bill now writes about his recollection of what it felt like to have completed the twelve steps, save making all of his amends. He shares: “THESE WERE REVOLUTIONARY AND DRASTIC PROPOSALS, BUT THE MOMENT I FULLY ACCEPTED THEM, THE EFFECT WAS ELEC-TRIC. THERE WAS A SENSE OF VICTORY, FOLLOWED BY SUCH A PEACE AND SERENI-TY AS I HAD NEVER KNOWN. THERE WAS UTTER CONFIDENCE. I FELT LIFTED UP, AS THOUGH THE GREAT CLEAN WIND OF A MOUNTAIN TOP BLEW THROUGH AND THROUGH. GOD COMES TO MOST MEN GRADUALLY, BUT HIS IMPACT ON ME WAS SUDDEN AND PROFOUND. FOR A MOMENT I WAS ALARMED, AND CALLED MY FRIEND, THE DOCTOR, TO ASK IF I WERE STILL SANE. HE LISTENED IN WONDER AS I TALKED Continued on page: 10

(Bill is still in Towns Hospital and didn’t “call” doctor Silkworth on the phone, Bill asked a nurse to “call” or “get” Dr. Silkworth to come to his room.) FINALLY, HE SHOOK HIS HEAD SAYING, “SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED TO YOU I DON’T UNDERSTAND. BUT YOU HAD BETTER HANG ON TO IT. ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN THE WAY YOU WERE.” THE GOOD DOCTOR NOW SEES MANY MEN WHO HAVE SUCH EXPERIENCES. HE KNOWS THAT THEY ARE REAL. WHILE I LAY IN THE HOSPI-TAL THE THOUGHT CAME THAT THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF HOPELESS ALCOHOL-ICS WHO MIGHT BE GLAD TO HAVE WHAT HAD BEEN SO FREELY GIVEN ME. PER-HAPS I COULD HELP SOME OF THEM. THEY IN TURN MIGHT WORK WITH OTHERS.

TREASURE VALLEY INTERGROUP CENTRAL OFFICE (TVICO)

STEERING COMMITTEE MINUTES

Tuesday, June 11, 2019

Chairman Scott convened the meeting at 6:02 PM. Margo read the 12 Traditions.

Attending were: Chairman Scott, Co-Chairman Steve, Secretary Greg, Treasurer Audrey, District

Rep Bob, Intergroup Co-Chair Joanne, Accountant Teri, Store Supervisor Margo.

REPORTS:

Steve moved to accept the May minutes as Amended. Audrey Seconded. Passed

Intergroup Treasurer reported a balance of $583.08 thru May 22.

TVICO Accountant Teri reported a good month for TVICO. Some issues on aging accounts but

nothing of concern. Greg moved/ Steve seconded accepting the financial report. Passed.

Intergroup Co-Chairman Joanne talked about the Founders Day losing $240 but the remaining

baked potatoes were well received by the mission.

District 3 SC rep. Bob reported their bid to host the 2020 Spring assembly and will be voting

soon to elect a chairman for the event. They will also hold a safety workshop in September.

District 8 SC rep. Steve said they voted to donate $100 to the unity day picnic.

Store Secretary/Supervisor Margo reported sales of two cases of Big Books at the Spring Assem-

bly and total sales of $2,849. It would have been more but for some thefts of clothing pre-

sumably taken by outsiders walking by the covered tables after hours. Margo said it was

time to order new “thank you” postcards for those making donations, asking for input as to

new designs. It was decided the new design would be voted on at the July meeting and care

should be taken so that such post cards don’t break AA anonymity. It was noted that inven-

tory will be taken at the end of June. It was also suggested the TVICO store return policy be

printed on the receipts. She informed the SC of some new products at the Store to include

the new quotes from Bill Wilson and other items.

OLD BUSINESS:

The committee discussed Margo attending the Central Office managers meeting in New Mexico.

The committee felt it would be supportive of her attending and she was asked to get more

AREA BUSINESS: preconference looking to do a MOCK GSC before ac-tual conference. Would be in Twin Falls, GSR's can attend, cost up to districts, looking at remote access so more people can attend, because college location is small. Reason for mock? UNITY DAY PICNIC, looking for speakers and still interest in all day event in future. 4. Alt DCM Report: Kristen-Talked about PNW conference and need for special

your groups still looking for Grapevine Rep and CPC/PI rep. UNITY DAY PICNIC. They have a $600-dollar budget and so far, $285.00 has been spent on food (Chickens $120.00, Ice Cream and Cake $50-75, Cold Slaw $80/but they had some donations so real cost, $40. Event will need 8 lbs. of potato salad). $120.00 was spent on reservation site. Soda and water are covered (form prior events). District 3 donated $100.00 dollars to event. Com-mittee can't find inventory of all utensils for event, but someone has it, and Kristen has been looking for two months. There is another community event before us so we can't begin until 1-3pm. Kristen needs 4 people before the event to cut up chickens around 2 pm, and she needs 8 people on the line from 4-6pm. The current flyers don't have con-tact information (Art and Kristen) but should be fixed soon. 50/50 Raffle is going to be handled by Lindsey (GSR) and Tom S. urer at home groups (lots of reasons to use, easy, no cost, don't deal with check, in-

stant). Gratitude Dinner will be held Saturday NOVEMBER 2ND 2019 AT BASQUE
