INTRODUCTION This training package has been specifically designed to provide skills in safe handling, moving and lifting of machines and materials. The package consists of four modules handling the relevant methods and techniques involved in the procedures to be followed in determining:

o How to identify and examine equipment. o How to secure a load. o How to plan a task and select the correct equipment. o How to carry out a specific task.

The program functions as an integrated whole and it is recommended that the sequence as given throughout modules one to four be adhered to as far as possible. To get the maximum benefit from the package all practical assignments must be carried out, since the main aim of the program is hands-on applications of principles provided. It may be found that in some instances, (especially in the tasks demonstrated in module four), that the practical assignments as outlined cannot be carried out exactly as given on the tape due to environmental, machine and equipment differences. This in itself should not be problematic since the principles and techniques demonstrated are the important factors. Tasks suited to each specific working environment should be provided so that trainees can build up their skills and expertise. Module four of the program gives practical demonstrations in lifting and moving various types of loads using different methods and techniques in each task. These methods and techniques are given to provide models when similar situations arise in the working environment. Remember that only a learner can learn for himself and can only become competent to carry out tasks if he has had adequate and sound practice in the principles and techniques involved in those tasks. It is recommended that those who achieve all the module objectives and the final competence test be issued with a certificate of competence. However, this certificate should only be issued to those candidates who prove that they are competent in the principles as demonstrated throughout the program. HOW TO USE THE PROGRAMME

1. The learner(s) must be briefed on the contents of each videotape before viewing the video. 2. Start off with the first videotape and follow the sequence of one to five. 3. Let the learner (s) view the video and carry out the discussion and practical assignments in the

sequence as required. 4. This program has been designed to cater for both literate and illiterate learners. More

autonomy should be allowed with literate learners, following Learner Controlled principles as far as possible.

5. Ensure that the video is stopped at DISCUSSION and PRACTICAL breaks and that opportunity is given for:

a) Learners to discuss the topics covered, between themselves, their peers, and the course controller.

b) Practical work assignments to be carried out. c) Learners to reinforce and assimilate principles covered in the videotape with a view to

transferring skills gained to their own work situation. 6. Let the learner(s) view the video as many times as necessary to ensure that the principles

involved are clearly grasped. 7. Provide the learner(s) with the end of module criterion test when they feel that they are able

to do the test. Sign off the relevant module when the criterion test has been successfully completed.

8. Complete one module at a time and do not carry on with the next module until the learner(s) has proved competent in the techniques and principles demonstrated and explained.

9. Let the learner(s) carry out the final competence test at the end, after all the criterion tests have successfully been completed.

10. Explain to the learners that they should feel free to use any additional resources of reference material they want to consult to assist them during the entire program.

TERMINAL OBJECTIVES The entire program ”SAFE LIFTING AND MOVING” is skills orientated, providing principles and techniques required to be able to DO the job. Those who complete the program and achieve the standards as required will be able to: SLM-1

o Identify the equipment most commonly used in lifting and moving. o Be able to examine the equipment. o Select only equipment that will safely handle a specific load.

SLM-2 o Make knots and hitches commonly used in lifting and moving. o Apply various slinging methods.

SLM-3 o Plan the execution of a task. o Select the correct equipment needed to carry out a specific task safely and effectively.

SLM-4 o Safely carry out lifting and moving tasks using equipment that is available.

FINAL COMPETENCY TEST NOTES ON FINAL COMPETENCY TEST This test has been designed to measure the ability and skills of those who have completed the program on SAFE LIFTING AND MOVING to carry out specific duties. The final competence test is based on the same procedures as the criterion test of module four – the main difference being that the learner will be required to plan, direct and carry out the task that is relatively new to him. Every effort must be made to vary the tasks selected for the final competence test in such a manner that the trainee will be evaluated in all the principles and techniques covered in the program. The surroundings and task should however not be of such a nature that the learner will have difficulty in relating it to the skills acquired during the program. Remember that the main objective of any test is to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program in getting trainees to develop their knowledge and skills. Although no “theory” questions are given in the final competency test, the learner’s ability to relate the “theory” to the practical situation is evaluated on the continuous basis – theory is not being evaluated on its own but rather as part of the overall system. It is after all not being able to TELL how to do something rather being to DO it that is important. It is also important that the learner’s performance be monitored all the time during the test, both during the period that he is part of the team and when he takes charge of the team. Any dangerous or wrong practices or instructions should immediately be stopped and assistance given in rectifying them. The learner should be corrected and be allowed to complete the task wherever possible even though it is obvious that all the criteria will not be achieved.

FINAL COMPETENCE TEST (All Learners)

TASKS WILL BE EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THE PRINCIPLES, METHODS AND TECHNIQUES COVERED IN THE PROGRAMME “SAFE LIFTING AND MOVING” ALL CRITERIA MUST BE ACHIEVED

1. You are required to work as part of a team carrying out a task selected by the course controller, in which you will be evaluated on your ability to understand and carry out instruction in lifting and moving skills. The course controller will select the position that you will take in the team and your position may be changed from time to time during the task.

2. You are required to take charge of a team carrying out a task selected by the course controller. You will be required to carry out the whole task in full, from the planning stage through the selecting and examining of equipment to the completion of the task. You will be required to give all the instructions for the different operations and take full responsibility for the actions of all members of the team. All communications to the team members must as far as possible be by means appropriate hand signals.

FINAL COMPETENCY TEST EVALUATION SHEET NOTE: Competency test instructions to be given verbally to illiterate learners. The learner giving instructions as well as those carrying out the instructions must be closely supervised to ensure that they do not give or carry out dangerous practices. Any sign of unsafe acts must be stopped immediately and assistance given to rectify the malpractice. Tasks incorporating the principles and techniques used in the program must be selected. As many tasks as possible should be selected avoiding tasks already covered in previous criterion tests or practice sessions. Where it is not possible to change the tasks altogether consideration should be given to change the tasks in such a manner that the trainee(s) will have to start the task completely from scratch.
