A Bibliographic Guide to the Non-Hispanic Countries of the Region for the period 1900-1975

The Digitized Caribbeana: 1900-1975 is a bibliographic database topically organized to facilitate scholarly research on the non- Hispanic countries of the region. It contains over seventeen thousand complete references to authored publications such as monographs, readers, conference proceedings, doctoral dissertations, master's theses, journal articles, reports, pamphlets, and other miscellaneous works. With the exception of a number of doctoral dissertations that were referenced through university abstracts reviewed before inclusion in the database. As a rule, publications were

excluded if they were without indication of authorship or editorship, such as the case in many government reports, or if they could not be physically located for purposes of verification and review. Unfortunately, this meant excluding more than several thousand possible entries known by title but not found in any of the many libraries searched. Also excluded, given their limited research value, were publications of two pages or less, particularly those printed after 1965. As noted in Caribbeana 1900-1965, no attempt was made to pass critical judgment about publications reviewed and listed. I see no reason in this digital database to change a perspective so aptly stated by H. Ian Hogbin in his introduction to C. R. H. Taylor's A Pacific Bibliography: "Some of the minor publications, it may be thought, would have been decently left in oblivion. But Mr. Taylor believes, in my opinion rightly, that we should not prejudge. Subsequent generations may well discover significant material in the most unlikely places."

Although so very much of value has been written about the non-Hispanic Caribbean in the twentieth century by both native and foreigner, it is remarkable how scattered and neglected much of it had been and how little had been done to locate and preserve it before it disappeared. This lamentable fact was the rationale for initiating a major project in 1963 designed to provide bibliographic coverage of that region from the start of the century to the then “present’. The project concentrated on publications dealing with those mainland and insular possessions or former possessions of Great Britain, France, The Netherlands, and the United States in the Caribbean region. More specifically, the areas covered include Surinam, French Guiana, and Guyana in South America, Belize in Central America, The Bahamas and Bermuda in the more northerly reaches of the region, and the scores of inhabited islands of the Antillean archipelago. These were the areas most in need of systematic bibliographic exploration. Publications on Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic (all in the Greater Antilles) were excluded from the project’s scope, as considerable bibliographic coverage of these territories was already available to the public.

Over a decade and a half, my associates and I examined thousands of publications at a variety of sites in order to create bibliographies particularly useful to social science researchers. All of this was done systematically but “by hand” as the project was undertaken before computers and other electronic technology was readily available. It took some ten years, in two phases, to collect, review, prepare, and publish the materials that are now contained in this database. The first phase, from 1963 to 1967, resulted in a hard copy book Caribbeana 1900-1965 published in 1968. From late 1971 through early 1977, we worked to substantially expand the first collection, to extend the geographical coverage to include The Bahamas and Bermuda, and, most importantly, to deal with the decade 1966-75, a period which saw a veritable explosion of publications about the Caribbean region. That effort resulted in The Complete Caribbeana 1900-1975 published in 1977. These publications brought together citations of what I then considered to be a very large part of the scholarly writing in a variety of languages - English, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Papiamento, Russian, Swedish, Danish, and Portuguese- on the non-Hispanic Caribbean. In book form, these publications have served for years as guides to seventy-five years of scholarly Caribbean literature. This is the digitalized version

of these publications and is being made available for all who would find a record of the scholarly probes of a seminal period of Caribbean history.

These published bibliographies and, therefore, the present digital database would never have come to fruition without the support of many individuals and institutions. In this context, I am much indebted to my fellow Caribbeanists for their generous response to requests in the 1960s for specialized bibliographies and reprints of their publications. Since well over two hundred replied at that time, I can only gratefully acknowledge them here collectively. Many of the articles, reports, bibliographies, and books that they sent would have been otherwise difficult to locate and, therefore, would have been missing from this compilation. These materials, after being processed for the database, were deposited in the Caribbean Library of the Research Institute for the Study of Man and were made available to the public.

A fundamental debt is owed also to the great libraries of New York City, Leiden, Los Angeles, and the West Indies, which so graciously cooperated in our search for relevant materials. To the staffs of these libraries, which so willingly and ably worked with us, I extend my most sincere appreciation. As might well be imagined, a large-scale project such as this, involving many people over a number of years and at a time when electronic and digital technology was unavailable, required considerable financial support. For the first phase, the costs of the undertaking were borne primarily by the Research Institute for the Study of Man and partly by a grant (GN-401) from the Office of Science Information Service, National Science Foundation. The second phase was supported almost entirely by a generous grant from the Samuel Rubin Foundation, which considered a reference work of this nature on the Caribbean to be of value and made the necessary resources available for its completion. What is owed to the Research Institute for the Study of Man and its then Director, the late Dr. Vera Rubin, goes beyond expressions of gratitude. ORGANIZATION OF THE REFERENCE

In addition to standard bibliographic data, each reference to a listed publication includes the following: (1) a reference number keyed to the appropriate topical section; (2) a coded notation identifying the country or territory covered by the publication; (3) if publication is not in English, a translation of the title into English; (4) the number(s) of any other topical sections(s) to which the publication is related (this number, in tandem with the primary reference number, provides a capsule description of the subject matter of the publication); and (5) a coded notation as to the library or place where the publication was originally located. The reference style in The Digitized Caribbeana is a modified version of that utilized by the American Anthropologist, the principal journal of the American Anthropological Association, as well as by a large number of other professional publications. While other styles could have been employed, for clarity of format, the one selected best serves the purposes of this bibliography.

NAME OF AUTHOR(S) An author's name is generally given as it appears in a given publication. However, if an author has multiple publications and the spelling or usage of that author’s name varies in these publications, the version of the name utilized in this bibliography for all of an author’s publications is the one that appears most often in an author’s publications or the version known to be the author's preference.

REFERENCE NUMBER AND SUBJECT MATTER. Each publication listed is assigned only one reference number placed at the extreme left of each reference on the line immediately below the author(s) name(s). That number appears in bold print and informs

the reader that the publication referenced has been placed in a specific topical section. The first one or two digits to the left of the period in the number indicate the topical section to which the publication is primarily assigned. In the examples above, the number 6 in the Goveia book indicates that the reference is located in section 6 (Slavery and Emancipation): the number 19 in the Herskovits article indicates that the reference is located in section 19 (Cultural Continuities). The last four digits of each reference number indicate the position of the reference within the section, a position assigned alphabetically by author surname.

All publications selected for inclusion were examined, catalogued as to subject matter, and assigned for primary affiliation to one of sixty-three subject or topical sections. The titles and descriptions of these sections are listed below. Publications that dealt meaningfully with more than one subject or topic were also assigned secondary affiliations in one or more relevant sections. Given the constraints in crafting bibliographic references, this procedure allowed as comprehensive a topical description of each reference as possible as well as complete a listing as possible of each topical section. For the convenience of the user, sections were numerically grouped into the following nine broad thematic parts: Introduction to the Caribbean (sections 1-3); The Past (sections 4-6); The People (sections 7-18); Elements of Culture (sections 19-26); Health, Education and Welfare (sections 27-36); Political Issues (sections 37-40); Socioeconomic Activities and Institutions (sections 41-52); The Environment and Human Geography (sections 53-56); and Soils, Crops, and Livestock. COUNTRY OR TERRITORIAL CODE. Each reference includes a geographical notation, in bold print, located to the immediate right of the reference number. This notation indicates the country(ies) or territory(ies) dealt with by an author in any given publication. If necessary, up to three country or territorial notations can be listed . If more than three countries or territories are dealt with in any publication, or if those areas together encompass a well-known geographical or political grouping, the code for this

larger, more inclusive grouping is utilized. If, for example, a publication deals equally with Guyana (GU), French Guiana (FG), and Surinam (SR), the geographical notation for Guianas-General (GG) is employed. In section 18 (West Indians Abroad), two geographical notations always appear for each reference; the one to the left indicating the Caribbean country or territory from which the population under discussion came from, and the one to the right indicating the host country in which these migrants are located. For example, the notation JM,UK would refer to a publication dealing with Jamaicans in the United Kingdom. YEAR OF PUBLICATION. This datum is located to the immediate right of the country or territorial notation. For example, in the Goveia example, 1965 is indicated as the year of publication; the Herskovits’ article was published in 1938. Given the placement of this information, dates are visible, page-by-page, in columnar alignment, facilitating the user's search for publications of particular periods of time. It was possible to identify the correct year of publication for virtually all publications referenced in this bibliography. In a few cases, however, this information was not available necessitating the use of the notation n.d. (no date) instead of an actual year. Another convention utilized in a very small number of references is a year linked to with a bracketed question mark, for example, 1916 [?] to distinguish a probable but not verifiable year of publication. A procedural problem arose with regard to articles published more than once in different venues and to books reissued by the same or different publishers. To avoid needless repetition, such multi-published items are referenced only once; the version listed being the one most recently published. References of this kind will also include an additional notation indicating the date of publication of the original edition. ARTICLE AND BOOK NOTATION. With regard to articles, the following is provided in the reference: a modified abbreviation, in italics, of the journal, the volume and issue numbers, and pagination. With regard to books, monographs, or other separate publications, the place of publication, the publisher, and number of pages are provided. In rare cases, some or all of this publishing information is unavailable in the work itself and, therefore, cannot be reproduced in the reference. The notation NP is employed to indicate that pagination or number of pages is unknown in those cases where the actual work was not paginated or where a citation was based on a doctoral

LIBRARY NOTATION. Almost all references carry a notation indicating the library where the publication was first found. This notation appears in capital italic letters, within brackets, and is placed at the extreme right hand comer of the last line of the citation. In the Goveia example, the notation [RIS] indicates that the publication was reviewed and is available at the library of the Research Institute for the Study of Man in New York City. Similarly in the Herskovits illustration, the notation [AMN] indicates that this work was reviewed and is accessible at the American Museum of Natural History. With one exception, the code to libraries that is provided below specifies the actual libraries used in the compilation of this collection. The exception in this code, the notation [PhD], refers not to a specific library but to North American doctoral dissertations, unfortunately not available to the bibliography team but catalogued for this database through the official abstracts published by Xerox University Microfilms. Xerox or

microfilm copies of these dissertations can be purchased from this source. References to doctoral dissertations from a United Kingdom university carry no library notations unless the manuscript itself was actually in one of the libraries used by the bibliography team. Since there was no central system in the United Kingdom for bringing dissertations or their abstracts together at the time this bibliography was being compiled, cataloguing such material for this collection depended heavily on information obtained by mail and telephone communication between the individual universities and the bibliographic team.
