Trojane Doughnuts

Trojane doughnuts are the probably the most popular doughnuts made in Slovenia. Trojane, situated by the Štajerska Highway, make the most doughnuts for the carnival period, i.e. around 100,000, however they sell vast numbers of doughnuts all year round as well. They have been making doughnuts for half a century and have made around 100 million doughnuts so far. The secret to their success lies in the recipe of Rajka Konjšek, the former owner of the inn Pri Konjšku na Trojanah, who was making doughnuts there in 1961. Guests were thrilled about the doughnuts back then but she probably never imagined that her doughnuts would become so famous.

Trojane Doughnuts are of the highest quality, always fresh and attentively prepared. Their doughnut has received the golden emblem from the Slovenian quality awards. Recipe for Trojane Doughnuts (Taste Slovenia, Janez Bogataj) Ingredients: 600 g white flour, 1 tablespoon salt, 5 egg yolks, 80 g raw butter, 30 g yeast, 2-3 dl milk, 1 tablespoon rum, grated lemon zest, apricot jam, powder sugar.

– Make sourdough from crumbled yeast, sugar and 2 spoons of milk. Dust with some flour. – Put flour in a bowl, make a hole in the middle and pour in the sourdough. Cover with cloth and leave to rest for a few minutes. – Mix lukewarm water, melted butter, egg yolks, sugar, salt, lemon zest and rum and pour mixture to the dough. – Knead into smooth dough. Let rise for at least 1 hour. – Dust board with flour, roll out dough until 1,5 cm thick and use mould (5-8 cm) to cut out circles. – Cover circles with tablecloth and let rise for 30 min. – Heat the oil in frying pan and plunge risen doughnuts upside down into oil. After a few minutes turn them around. – Pick doughnuts out and place them on paper towel to absorb extra fat. – Inject apricot jam and put on plate. Sprinkle with sugar. Dober tek! Bon appétit! Enjoy!

minutes or until smooth. Cover. Prove for 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size. Step 3 - Meanwhile, process walnuts in a food processor until finely chopped. Add extra sugar, honey, cinnamon and remaining butter and rum. Process until combined. Bring milk to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat. Add walnut mixture. Stir for 10 minutes or until thick. Cool. Stir in egg white. Step 4 - Turn dough out onto a work surface and use a floured rolling pin to roll it out to a 45cm x 35cm rectangle. Spread over walnut mixture. Starting from 1 long side, roll up to enclose filling. Coil into a greased 22cm kugelhopf pan, seam-side in. Cover. Set aside to prove for 1 hour or until the dough reaches the top of the pan. Step 5 - Preheat oven to 180C. Bake for 35 minutes or until cake sounds hollow when tapped. Cool for 5 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack.

Christmas in Slovenia; Markets, Food, Traditions and more! Slovenia hasn’t been celebrating Christmas for that long, well not in the form we know it in the Western world, however, the country has certainly caught up with, and caught onto, the festive spirit and now there are Christmas-related events happening throughout the land. So, how is Christmas celebrated in Slovenia? What is/isn’t open? What is there to do, where to go? As in many other countries in Europe, the evening of the 24th is when most families celebrate and get together for a special meal, exchange gifts and/or attend midnight mass. If you are visiting Slovenia at that time it is worth noting that many restaurants may be closed on this evening or close earlier than usual. Shops are usually open on the 24th but close a little

earlier than usual. All shops are closed on the 25th and again this is a family day, often for some recreational activities perhaps skiing, hiking or visiting relatives. The 26th is also a public holiday, ‘Independence and Unity Day’ and therefore again many shops and business will be closed although these days most of the larger ones are open, at least for a few hours in the morning. There are Christmas markets taking place in all the major cities, the largest being in Ljubljana, where there are numerous markets. The main market is held alongside the banks of the Ljubljanica river, but there are also other markets spread across the city’s squares, with a vast range of events and entertainment taking place from now until the New Year. Christmas Market in Portorož There are of course many more towns that have Christmas markets and events – too many to list here – and many of these, including those listed here also have open-air ice-skating rinks. If you are looking for a festive event with a difference, every year, weather conditions permitting, there is a live ice nativity play held in the Mlača Gorge in the village of Mojstrana. With the freezing temperatures we have had of late, this year’s event looks sure to be going ahead and the performances are scheduled to begin on Christmas Day. The entrance fee also includes a walk through the ice kingdom, a gallery of nativity scenes and the nativity performance held in the frozen waterfall. Be sure to wrap up warmly! Live Ice Nativity in Mojstrana Turning to food, no Slovene home is complete over the festive season without potica – a traditional rolled and filled cake. You will find it everywhere; in cafes, supermarkets, and in almost every Slovene’s home. Potica come in many varieties, the most popular varieties are filled with walnut or poppy seeds, but there are also other fillings including tarragon or coconut, and special editions with dual fillings, such as the one below – named ‘potica of our roots‘ prepared by one of Slovenia’s top chefs, Uroš Štefelin, from Vila Podvin.

Ultra-light, fast and cheap: Move aside China, a small Slovenian company wants to sell the world's first electric four-seater plane More than a century after the Wright brothers flew the world's first powered aircraft, developers are in a race for the first commercially-viable electric planes.

The Taurus Electro is available to customers worldwide. Photo: Pipistrel. As China gives the green light to the production of its first electric aircraft for commercial use, a small Slovenian company also hopes to revolutionise the aviation industry with its award-winning electric planes.

Pipistrel's pioneering Taurus Electro is seen as a breath of fresh air in a sector responsible for 13 per cent of CO2 emissions from all transport sources. Launched in 2007, around 20 orders are now put in every year for the two-seater plane, which is produced in a factory in the town of Ajdovščina, close to the Italian border. The 110,000-euro (HK$935,973) price tag is offset by the plane's inexpensive maintenance: at 70 cents an hour, the Taurus is 10 times cheaper to run than traditional twin-seater planes, according to Pipistrel. By comparison, China’s two-seat RX1E aircraft, which has just been approved for production by civil aviation authorities, costs about 1 million yuan (HK$1.2 million).

The Chinese government sees ‘strong market potential’ for the two-seat RX1E plane due to its environmental friendliness. But at 1 million yuan it’s not cheap. Photo: SCMP Pictures. For the Slovenian model, simplicity is key: you charge the battery, hop inside the cockpit and hit the “on” button to activate the fuselage's propeller. The large-winged aircraft can thrust itself to an altitude of 2,000 metres, after which the engine is retracted and the Taurus glides across the sky as a sailplane. “You have just two buttons, up and down and full power, but you can always switch off immediately when you need to slow down the aircraft,” explained pilot Nejc Faganelj, soaring high above the Slovenian countryside on a sunny winter's day. But behind the deceptively easy usage lies a highly complex design. The most crucial element - and biggest challenge - is the lithium battery, which needs to be light yet sturdy so that it doesn't catch fire if it overheats. “To copy a design from the car industry is not that difficult. But to make something that is lighter, more efficient - that is definitely something that has not been done before,” said Pipistrel engineer Jure Tomaciz.

The Taurus Electro, which Pipistrel says is 10 times cheaper to run than traditional twin-seater planes, has a state-of-the-art battery system. Photo: Pipistrel. Now Pipistrel has even loftier ambitions: to sell the world's first electric four-seater plane. Its Taurus G4 prototype - built by combining two twin-seaters - won Nasa’s prestigious Green Flight award in 2011, worth $1.35 million. The plane covered 650 kilometres in the space of two hours with an average speed of 172 km/h. “The car industry, with all the money it has at its disposal, and practically no weight limitation, even today isn't capable of producing an electric car that would take four passengers for 600 kilometres at a speed of 200 kilometres per hour,” Pipistrel's founder, Ivo Boscarol said “We did that with our electric plane,” he added proudly. The son of a machine engineer turned test pilot, Boscarol has spent the last three decades developing and perfecting his low-carbon invention. When he built his first aircraft in the 1980s, he had to test-fly them in secret and only after dark -- at the time piloting private planes was prohibited in Slovenia, then part of the former communist Yugoslavia. The night flights, along with the aero-dynamic shape of the plane wings, inspired Boscarol to name his company after the pipistrelle bat. Today, the Slovenian firm is a global market leader in the field of energy-efficient aviation travel, with Boscarol featuring on the 2015 list of news outlet Politico's most influential Europeans. “I'm sure the electric flight will become a standard. This aircraft will be able to cross the Atlantic, to fly faster, to carry more persons,” he said confidently. However, large aircraft companies remain cautious, saying there's still a long way to go before the technology can be used for heavy passenger planes.

“I don't think we'll see an entirely electric plane for another 50 years,” said Philippe Petitcolin whose Safran company supplies engines to Airbus planes. Nevertheless, “in 20 or 30 years, we may be able to fly regional commuter jets with around 60 people onboard thanks to hybrid electric propulsion”, according to Airbus Group boss Tom Enders. The corporate giant currently explores this vein with its E-Fan, a twin-seater plane powered by two 30-kilowatt electric motors. The ultra-light aircraft aims to offer aero clubs an alternative to traditional planes, both noisier and more polluting. But, there's still a lot of room for improvement: the E-Fan currently only has a one-hour flight range. Last summer it however managed to cross the English Channel, 106 years after Frenchman Louis Bleriot became the first person to make the journey in a heavier-than-air plane. The E-Fan's exploit shows what can be possible with “a future aviation based on more electric technologies”, according to Airbus. http://www.scmp.com/news/world/article/1887461/ultra-light-fast-and-cheap-move-aside-china-small-slovenian-company-wants

Planica Nordic Centre officially launched Planica, 11 December - The Planica Nordic Centre opened in the Alpine valley of Planica (NW) on Friday, bringing new shine to the legendary sports venue following lengthy construction and renovation works that started eight years ago.

The complex featuring a ski-flying hill, seven ski-jumping hills and 40 kilometres of cross-country skiing tracks in the Alpine valley of Tamar (NW) cost around EUR 40m. The centre was launched in a ceremony addressed by Education, Science and Sport Minister Maja Makovec Brenčič, Prime Minister Miro Cerar and head of the Planica Sports Association Jelko Gros.

"Planica is a symbol of courage, natural beauty and heritage of world renown. This is the place where people saw first flights over 100 and 200 metres and 42 world records," Cerar said at the opening ceremony. The prime minister noted that the new centre was also about preserving the cultural and technical heritage and providing the region of Gorenjsko with important infrastructure.

"Planica is a national symbol of Slovenia, and the Nordic centre has restored Planica to its former glory," added Minister Makovec Brenčič, noting that the modern centre was fully a product of Slovenian know-how. The ceremony also featured retired ski jumper Franci Petek bringing a Slovenian flag down the zip line installed over the ski flying hill and handing it to cross-country skiing legend Petra Majdič. The act was meant as to symbolically connect the two branches of Nordic skiing, which are getting state-of-the-art venues in the valley. In addition to the renovated flying hill, called the Bloudek Giant, which was already inaugurated in March in the ski-flying World Cup finale, the complex features hills of all sizes in one place: small, medium, normal and large hills. The cross-country skiing complex meanwhile includes an indoor track for off-season trainings and seven kilometres of tracks connecting the centre with the existing 40 km of recreational tracks in Planica, Kranjska Gora and Tamar. The centre will host an open day for visitors on Saturday, as part of which they will have the opportunity to try the 566-metre long zip-line, the steepest in the world. The centre, which will require one million euros a year for its operation, expects to generate a third of its revenue from tourism, and the rest from competitions and training events for professional athletes. Ski jumping in Planica dates back to the 1920s, when the first ski-jumping hill was constructed on the slope of Mount Ponca, and in 1934, Stanko Bloudek built a larger hill.

The first ski jump over 100 metres was achieved there in 1936 by the Austrian Sepp Bradl, and many world records in ski-jumping and flying have been broken there since.
