St Lucie Sailing Club The Log - July 2020 Incorporated April 4, 1975 From the Acting Commodore: What a contrast these last few weeks have been to what the weather was like before that. ‘Don’t know about the rest of you, but I thought I was going to grow fins the weather was so wet. Now we are back to normal summer weather with afternoon storms followed by heat to dry up the excess of rain water. But I digress. The Saint Lucie Sailing Club is thriving even through stormy weather and the COVID-19 Virus. Our membership has grown to the highest it has been for a long time and the number of boats taking part in the races has exceeded anything seen before. Just last Saturday for the beer can race, we had nine boats taking part. It is a shame that we have still not been able to bring together the Members for our monthly meetings but we may be getting closer. It has been determined that using Zoom or any other internet meeting was not a viable option, BUT at the Bridge meeting we held a couple of days ago, other ways were discussed. We have Bridge members looking for Open Air places where we may be able to hold a meeting, Locks Landing Park being one. The parking lot at the church where we were supposed to hold the meetings, being another. Whatever is decided, we will still have to continue following CDC Guidelines, if not for your own protection, for the safety of others who may be more susceptible to the virus. With a growth in positive virus reports being reported in Florida, we don’t want our members to be on those reports. Whatever is found or decided, we may also have to provide our own seating. One of our Bridge members, Susan Strickland, came across something which may be of interest to a number of you. One of our members from a couple of years ago, Eric Dove, sailed off with his wife Lauren and their young son Rivers, to the Caribbean. Click on the link to listen to a new song of his and see how they are doing. Nice sunset view of tropical places to take everyone's mind far away from pandemic reality and into a happier place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zrdb5YJjSU As a final note I wish to let you know that this will be my last letter as the Acting Commodore. Your actual Commodore Larry Bryant, will be taking over the helm again effective July 1 st . It’s good to see him back. James Arthur From the Commodore: I am back to resume my responsibility as commodore. I would like to thank James Arthur for doing a GREAT job in my absence. The club went on nicely under his leadership… thanks again James. As everyone agrees, these are very strange times we live in. What with the virus and the bridge problem, we have to remember that this too, will pass. The SLSC bridge has been having meetings viva Zoom. Several of member of the bridge are looking into an outside location to have a social/meeting as soon as it is safe. No one knows when it will be safe for a large group to meet, but when that time comes, we will be ready. We welcome all ideas that the membership may have. Just call or email your ideas to Linda Magda, Joe Sawyer, or Kevin Kirwin. I would like to give Mike Brescher a special thanks for the outstanding job he has done in keeping the race program going. It has been very successful with more boats competing. We welcome all the new captains and crew. The races have been fantastic. I am very glad to see our members using good judgement in dealing with the virus problem. We all are anxious for the time we can meet and get back to a somewhat normal life. Have fun and be safe. Larry Bryant, SLSC Commodore

Racing ScuttlebuttMike Brescher, Race Captain

The Summer Sailstice Regatta was held June 20, 2020. We had a surprisingly great turnout of sailors, and sailingweather stayed steady all day, but the wind was shifty causing boats to change positions. Maybe after all the rainand storms we have had for the previous days, this weather seemed extra special. It was good to see a couple ofnew boats. One new boat came out and parked next to the starting line in a very shallow spot, and watched all the other boatsstart until he got towed off. He then started late but sailed the course. The boats were nicely spread out on the course for fun competition but all finished close with less than a 22-minutedifference between first and fifth. The sailors must have done something nice to be rewarded with such a wonderfulday to be on the River.

The Trophies were presented for the J & M Class as the first three boats finished. “We still are refraining fromhaving an after-race party. The awards were as follow:1st Whisper Larry Bryant (F) 1:39:222nd Last Word Darren Kirkland (F) 1:41:503rd Wild Rice Richard Rice & Asta Poirier (F) 1:44:234rd Salty Dogs Steve Weinstein (F) 1:56:105th Even Star Russell Singson (F) 2:01:196th My Weigh Jack Molinelli (F) 2:03:457th Max Chad Gilpin (F) 2:09:408th Lily Grace Jacques Marzi (F) 2:27:35

While some might understandably be hesitant to attend an event of thisnature right now, it’s something to keep in mind for future months when theCovid-19 situation may hopefully improve. If you decide to attend any ofthese let others know. It might be fun to go as a group. While seating isavailable on the patio, it might be a good idea to bring a lawn chair… just incase.
