Activity – 3 : A tailor’s diary …… These days I am worried. Business is bad! I don't get many customers. More and more young people are buying readymade clothes. I try hard. I find out about the latest styles and learn how to stitch them. I even bought a

new machine which can stitch jeans. But young people don't come to me like they did last year. They are not interested in the quality of clothes. They are more interested in brands and big names. Big companies advertise on television and in newspapers and magazines. They print posters and put up advertisements on roads and in shops, in bus stops and in railway stations. They spend huge amounts of money on advertisements. What can a poor tailor like me do? But I won't give up. I will think of new ideas to attract young people to my shop. I know my clothes are better than readymade stuff. What are the tailor's new ideas? You can write them in the space below. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Working in space can be dangerous. Astronauts have to wear special clothes called 'spacesuits' when they work in space. When they remain inside the space shuttle in which they have travelled to space, they do not need any special clothes. Here, they dress in the same way as we do on earth. This is because the air pressure, temperature and humidity are kept at the same level as earth. However, the astronauts need a lot of extra clothes because they cannot wash their clothes inside the space shuttle. But when the astronauts go outside the space shuttle to work in space, they need to wear their spacesuits. These spacesuits have air in them so that the astronauts can breathe. They have lots of layers. The layers protect the astronauts from extreme heat and cold. One of the layers is made of bullet proof materials. This protects an astronaut from objects flying in space. The gloves have heaters inside to warm the fingers so that they can pick up things. The helmet keeps oxygen levels and pressure constant. It is covered with thin layer of gold to protect the astronauts from the sun's harmful rays. It can also have a camera attached to it. What do you think a fire fighter's clothes should be like? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Activity – 11 :

Here is something interesting for you to read.

What is beautiful?

A flower.

A flower? Are you sure?

I think so. Yes, a flower is really beautiful.

Why? Why do you say so?

Well, it has a lovely shape, and such nice colours. Surely that makes it beautiful?

Hmm. It is beautiful only for a few hours. After some time it is not beautiful at all. It begins to dry up, wilt. The shape is lost and the colours are gone. So can you really call it beautiful?

Page 13: SLU English 4 SBP

STUDENT LEARNING UNIT 4

12

Well if you want something to always be as it is, to be permanent, then nothing can be called beautiful!

What do you mean nothing can be considered beautiful?

If you find a person beautiful, we all know that people become old .... So will you still call them beautiful?

OK, what about feelings?

But they last for even less time than flowers! Yes, but

surely there can be beautiful buildings?

They are beautiful as long as they are there. But they too are not permanent.

Aren't they? Taj Mahal has been there for centuries.

No. With time, these beautiful buildings will become old too. Look at many of the other palaces and forts. And if there is an earthquake or flood or fire, they get damaged and are not beautiful any more.

So what do you think? What is beautiful? About this SLU :

• Did you find the topic of this SLU interesting ? • Did it make you want to discuss ideas about beauty, advertisements, etc. with

your friends ? • Did you find the reading passages easy, medium or difficult ?
