Difference of Opinions with Others

Before we start………

All of us have opinions about things. Our opinions are based on our experiences with family and friends, the books we read, the films we see, and many more things. But we can't always agree with others, can we? Sometimes our views may differ from others. Sometimes they may change over time. How do we express our disagreement? How do we react to others who disagree with us? They have as much right to their opinions as you have to yours. We often get annoyed with friends when they oppose our views or angry with older people in our family who tell us to obey them because they are older. This SLU is all about how we deal with differences of opinion.

Activity -1: How do different people see the same person? It is interesting to see how people can have different opinions about the same person. Write down the names of three friends. Now write two things you think are true about each person. E.g.

1. Gobinda is talkative. He can be quite nasty when he is in a bad mood.

2. Madhuri is strong. She is confident and sure of herself.

Now talk to two or three other classmates who know your friends. Ask them to give you one or two opinions about your friends. Some of your classmates may not want to talk about your friends in a negative way, so you may get only positive comments. You can also ask your parents or other family members, who know your friends, for their opinions.

Compare your opinions with those of your classmates and family members. Are they the same or different? Write down what you find out below.

How can I try to explain? When I do he turns away again, It's always been the same, same old story. From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen, Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.

..........................................................................................................................................................

About whom is he or she talking? .....................................................................................................................................................................

.....................................................................................................................................................................

Why do you think that the person who is talking wants to go away? ................................................................................................................................................................. ................................................................................................................................................................. Do you think the person who is speaking is right in saying that he or she wants to go away? Can you

think of another way to solve this problem?

................................................................................................................................................................. .................................................................................................................................................................

Can you remember a situation when you felt angry in this way?

Activity – 3 : Changing opinions Think of when you are in Class-5 Can you think of someone you were close friends with then but you are no longer close

to now? Why did your relationship change? How about a film you liked then but now think is silly or boring? Is there a singer you liked then but don't enjoy listening to any more? How about an actor/actress?

Write your answers in your notebook, if you want. Can you think of other things about which you have changed your opinion? Fill in the columns below. In the first column write the opinions you had earlier. In the second column write what you think now. Your earlier opinions Your present opinions

Activity – 4 : Expressing differences of opinion There are different ways in which you can disagree with someone. You can be rude and hurt the person you are talking with. That means your conversation with that person ends and both of you leave each other feeling angry. Or you can be polite and respectful of the other person. This means that the dialogue continues between the two of you. You may actually learn something from each other or you may agree to disagree. Read each sentence and say which ones are rude and which ones are polite.

I'm sorry, I don't agree. What rubbish you are talking. Don't talk nonsense! I look at it differently. You don't know what you're talking about. You are completely wrong. I agree with you but why don't you think about it this way? I'm sorry, but I have a slightly different view.

Can you think of any other sentences of both kinds? Activity – 5 : Double pictures Look at these pictures. The first time you look you will see one image. When you look at it again closely, you will probably see another completely different image. You can't see both images at the same time. Can you identify the two images in each picture?

What does this tell us about ourselves and how we see things? Write in your notebook

2. One should not tell lies.

3. We should be kind to animals.

4. ..............................................................................................................................................................

5. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Now read the following instances and read the above statements again. Do you think the statements could be wrong in these instances?

Ajmal is a ninth standard student. His father fell ill and couldn't go to work anymore. Ajmal wanted to continue his studies. So he decided to do part-time work.

Soni was walking to school. On the way she saw an old woman begging. Soni looked at the lady. She was very old and looked weak and tired. Soni was upset. She remembered the fifty rupees her father had given her to buy a geometric box. She hesitated a bit, wondering what she would tell her father. Her father had a bad temper and Soni was a little afraid of him. She gave the fifty rupees to the old lady and told her father that she had lost the money.

Can you create an event when the third sentence is wrong? ................................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................................

................................................................................................................................................................
