Welcome  the  New  Center  Advisory  Board  Chairman

Mr.  Steve  Gerogevitch  from  the  Boeing  Company  assumes  the   Chairmanship   of   the   Center   for   Supply   chain  Management   Studies   at   Saint   Louis   University   beginning  July  1,  2013.  This  is  his  vision  for  the  Center.    First  and  foremost,  I  would  like  to  thank  Mr.  Gary  Welker  for   his   steadfast   leadership   through   the   past   6   years   as  Chairman  of  the  Center  for  Supply  Chain  Studies  (CSCMS).    The   past   half-‐decade   has   brought   significant   financial  challenges   to   both   businesses   and   professional  organizations,   and   Gary   has   been   integral   in   ensuring   that   CSCMS   has   remained  healthy  and  indeed  thrived  through  these  difficult  times.  Through  the  leadership  of  Mr.  Gary  Welker  as  our  Chair,  our  director  Dr.  Ik-‐Whan  (Ike)  Kwon,  Director,  our  board  and  the  many  other  volunteers  who  give  of  their  time,  energy  and  financial  support,  CSCMS  has  emerged  as  the  premier  St.  Louis  organization  in  advancing  the  discipline  of  Supply  Chain   Management.     We   have   done   this   through   the   development   of   leadership  forums  and  classroom  learning  that  addresses  the  most  current  and  pressing  needs  of  the  supply  chain  community.    We  have  engaged  the  nation’s  leading  experts  to  discuss  areas  of  technology,  academics  and  process  excellence   in  the  supply  chain  discipline.    We  have  established  degree  programs  that  are  ranked  within  the  top  20  in  the  nation  and,  most  importantly,  we  continue  to  hear  from  our  constituents  and  members  that  we  are  relevant  and  provide  real  value  to  their  organizations.

I  can’t  help  but  get  excited  as  I  think  about  what  lies  ahead  for  our  organization.    Our  membership   is   strong  and  our  board   is  engaged  and  enthusiastic  about  our  mission.    We   are   committed   to   the   continued   development   of   strong   supply   chain   academic  programs   and   reinforcing   our   relationships   with   SLU   faculty   and   the   university  leadership.    We   will   continue   to   develop   innovative,   pertinent   and   forward   leaning  programs  for  supply  chain  leaders  and  professionals.    We  are  committed  to  engage  in  the   development   of   research   and   professional   excellence   required   to   evolve   the  theories  and  practices  that  will  take  our  supply  chains  to  the  next  level  of  excellence.

 Congratulation  to  our  graduates!!!

Gary  Welker’s  Remarks  at  the  Awards  Ceremony

Good  evening.

As  chairman  of  SLU’s  Center  for  Supply  Chain  Management  Studies,  it  is  my  pleasure  to  congratulate  the  Advanced  Supply  Chain  Class  of  2012  and  2013  and  the  International  Trade  Class  of  2013  for  achieving  their  certification  in  these  programs.

Based  on  my  experience  as  VP  of  Logistics  at  Anheuser-‐Busch,  I  firmly  believe  that  by  obtaining  today’s  certificates  will  enable  you  to  contribute  additional  supply  chain  value  at  your  company  and  eventually  give  you  a  competitive  advantage  for  a  promotion.

Also,  in  addition  to  the  educational  expertise  you  received,  your  attendance  has  provided  you  an  environment  that  allows  you  to  network  with  your  peers  on  supply  chain  issues  and  best  practices.    I  urge  to  continue  to  use  this  benefit/resource  as  you  perform  your  future  supply  chain  responsibilities.

As  in  any  successful  organization  or  business,  you  cannot  rest  on  your  laurels;  therefore,  the  Supply  Chain  Center  is  constantly  updating  course  material  or  adding  new  programs  to  meet  the  future  business  needs  of  Corporate  America.    An  example  of  this  is  that  our  fall  Advanced  Supply  Chain  course  has  been  re-‐invented  with  the  recent  addition  of  a  product  safety  course  to  the  curriculum.

A  recognition  that  the  center  is  very  proud  of  is  that  SLU  Supply  Chain  Program  has  been  ranked  in  the  top  twenty  Supply  Chain  Programs  that  exists  at  all  academic  institutions.    This  achievement  is  the  result  of  the  commitment  and  leadership  of  the  board  members  and  the  input  we  received  from  the  class  survey  at  the  end  of  the  supply  chain  courses.

As  I  end,  I  would  like  to  say  that  on  behalf  of  the  board  members,  we  thank  you  for  attending  our  supply  chain  courses  and  hope  you  come  back  for  additional  courses.    Your  attendance  has  allowed  the  Center  to  continue  to  achieve  our  educational  goals  for  the  St.  Louis  community.

On  behalf  of  the  Supply  Chain  Center’s  board  members  we  thank  you  and  your  company  for  giving  you  the  time  and  funds  to  attend  these  courses.

Celebrating  Our  15th  Anniversary

The  Center  for  Supply  Chain  Management  Studies  at  Saint  Louis  University  opened  its  door   in   July   1998.   The   concept   of   offering   educational   program   in   logistics   and  transportation  was  originated  by  Mr.   Robert   Baer,   then  President   of  UniGroup,   Inc.,  and   a   member   of   Saint   Louis   University   Board   of   Trustees.   Impressed   by   Dr.   John  Hamilton’s  suggestion  (Dr.  Hamilton  was,  then  a  Senior  Vice  President  in  Information  Technology  at  UniGroup,  Inc.),  Mr.  Baer  contacted  Dr.  Neil  Seitz,  then  Dean  of  the  John  Cook  School  of  Business  at  Saint  Louis  University.    Encouraged  by  Dean  Seitz’s   recommendation  and  commitment,   Ik-‐Whan   (Ike)  Kwon,  Ph.D.  contacted  a  few  interested  professionals   in  this  area  and  started  to   investigate  similar   programs   in   the   country,   notably,   Ohio   State   University,   Michigan   State  University,  Northwestern  University,  University  of  Tennessee,  Pens  State  and  Georgia  Tech.    Handful  of   local  professionals;  Mr.  Bob  Drury   (VP-‐Logistics  at   Schnucks  Market),   late  Mr.  Bob  Delaney   (VP-‐   Logistics   at  CASS   Information  Systems  and  Principal  Author  of  the  Annual  Logistics  Report),    late  Mr.  David  Tarr  (then  President  of  CLM,  now  CSCMP),  Mr.  Bill  Hoffman  (then  President  of  Local  CLM),  Mr.  Ray  Martin  (VP-‐Customer  Relations  at  Sara  Lee),  Mr.   Jerry  Hayden   (VP-‐Administration  at  Solutia),  Dr.  Neil  Seitz,  Dr.   John

Hamilton   worked   tirelessly   for   two   years.   In   1998,   with  blessing   by  Dean  Neil   Seitz,   the   Center   for   Supply   Chain  Management  Studies  was  born  at  the  Cupple’s  House.  The  first   national   conference   was   held   in   the   campus   in  November   1998   with   late   Dr.   Don   Bowersox   (Dean   of  Business  School  at  Michigan  State  University  and  pioneer  of  supply  chain  management  concept)  as  the

keynote  speaker  and  Mr.  Joe  Andrawski  (President  of  Vic)  as  a  panel  discussant.    In  celebrating  our  15th  year  anniversary,  the  Center  is  pleased  to  carry  comments  and  historical   notes   from   each   pioneer   to   share   their   thoughts   and   experiences   in  alphabetical  orders.  Here  is  the  first  installment  from  Mr.  Bob  Drury.    “Thomas   Edison   said   it   best   “There   are   no   rules   here   -‐   -‐  we’re   trying   to   accomplish  something”.  That  essentially  was  the  guidance  that  Professor  Ike  Kwon  gave  our  small  working  group  in  the  initial  concept  meetings  that  eventually  resulted  in  the  Center  for  Supply  Chain  Management  Studies.

We   weren’t   trying   to   reinvent   the   wheel.   Similar   organizations   were   already   in  existence  at  several  universities  such  as  Michigan  State,  Georgia,  and  Penn  State.  They  gave  us  models  to  draw  from  in  designing  a  logistics  focused  educational  resource  that  would  provide  value  for  firms  in  the  St.  Louis  region.

However,   the   Center  would   never   have   gotten   off   the   ground  without   the  wisdom,  expertise  and  contacts  of  two  nationally  recognized  logistics  gurus  -‐  Dave  Tarr  &  Bob  Delaney.  When  we  needed  world  class  speakers  to  attract  an  audience  to  our  fledgling  organization,  Dave  arranged  for  a  Supply  Chain  Legend,  Dr.  Don  Bowersox  of  Michigan  State   University,   to   come   in   as   a   keynote   speaker.   Likewise,   Bob   brought   in   the  Chairman   of   Yellow   Freight,   Sam   Skinner,   who   was   also   a   former   Secretary   of  Transportation   and   White   House   Chief   of   Staff   under   President   George   Bush.   As   a  result,   CSCMS   gained   instant   “gravitas”   in   our   target   market   and   in   St.   Louis  University.”

The  Center  Announces  a  Major  Curriculum  Change  to  the  Advanced  Supply  Chain  Certificate  Program

A   review   committee   of   our   Advisory   Board   for   the   Center   undertook   an   extensive  evaluation   of   the   current   Advanced   Supply   Chain  Management   certificate   program.    The  initial  offering  of  the  Advanced  Supply  Chain  Management  certificate  program  was  in  2003.      There  have  been  hundreds  of  students  that  have  earned  the  certificate,  and  we  are  proud  of  being  ranked  16th  by  U.S.  News  and  World  Report.    This  review  by  the  committee   is  one  of   the  key  strategic   initiatives  undertaken  by   the  Center   to  ensure  that   we   provide   the   best   possible   professional   development   programs   for   member

employees  and  others  that  attend  our  programs.    We  have  used  and  will  continue  to  use   a   continuous   program   improvement   process   with   feedback   form   students   and  others.       Based   on   the   committee’s   recommendations   and   approval   by   the   Center  Advisory  Board  we  will   implement  a  new  certificate  program  –  the  Integrated  Supply  Chain  Management  Certificate  program.    Some  of  the  changes  are  listed  below.        Integrated  Supply  Chain  Management  Certificate  Program    This   program  will   use   a   format   similar   to   our   academic   programs  with   a   core   set   of  courses  required  and  some  electives.    This  new  format  will  aid  us  in  ensuring  that  the  program  reflects  the  current  and  future  challenges  of  supply  chain  management.    ISCM  Program  Requirements    Core  Certificate  Programs  Requirements:    The  Center  offers  a  wide  range  of  programs  and  has  introduced  some  new  concepts  to  the  professional  development  programs.    The  Integrated  SCM  program  is  built  around  a   core   set   of   courses   or   modules   (Integrated   Supply   Chain   Management   Concepts,  Inventory   Management,   Transportation/Warehousing   Management   and   Strategic  Sourcing)  and  one  or  more  electives.    These  advanced  programs  also  require  a  course  project  as  part  of   the  certificate  process.    When  taking  an  advanced  course  the  core  must   be   taken   in   one   semester   and   depending   on   the   program,   the   elective   and  project  must  be  completed  within  18  months  of  the  start  of  the  program.    Elective  Options:    Electives  can  be  one  or  two  days.    If  the  elective  is  one  day,  it  is  included  in  the  fee  for  the  core  certificate  program  for  which  you  are  registered.    In  some  instances  a  one  day  elective   such   as   Sales   and   Operations   Planning,   Reducing   Supply   Chain   Variability,  Forecasting  and  other  one  day  options  will  meet  the  certificate  requirements.    We  also  offer   a   two   day   certificate   program   in   Project  Management,   Lean   Logistics,   Change  Management  and  others  under  development.    If  a  student  decides  to  take  both  days,  the  second  day  will  be  at  the  fee  level  of  the  selected  program.    The  student  would  pay  for   one   day   and   be   eligible   to   earn   an   additional   certificate.     This   is   always   at   the  student’s   option.       Electives   must   be   declared   and   approved   by   CSCMS   during   the  registration  process.    To  provide  students  with  schedules  for  the  programs  and  to  aid

in   the   planning   for   electives   we   have   expanded   our   course   and   program   offerings  calendar  to  18  months.      This  will  be  available  on  our  web  site  as  continue  to  process  of  full  implementation  of  the  Integrated  Supply  Chain  Management  certificate  program.    ISCM  Program  and  center  Highlights:    In  order  to  reflect  the  significant  curriculum  changes  the  Center  has  re-‐titled  the  name  from  Advanced  Supply  Chain  Management  to   Integrated  Supply  Chain  Management  (ISCM)   and  added  electives   to   the   ‘core’  program.    There   is  extensive   literature   that  supports  this  change.

• The  John  Cook  School  of  Business  is  nationally  recognized  for  supply  chain  management  certificate  programs  and  leadership.

• The  Center  offers  a  wide  range  of  SCM  and  related  programs.  • The  new  certificate  format  allows  flexibility  and  enables  students  to  select  an

elective  or  electives  in  their  preferred  fields.  • The  program  is  flexible  and  if  a  student’s  travel  or  other  commitments  creates  a

conflict  and  they  cannot  attend  one  of  the  modules,  they  simply  take  it  the  next  semester.

• The  programs  use  a  continuous  feedback  process  to  ensure  we  are  meeting  student  needs  and  expectations  which  allow  us  to  improve  our  programs.

• Our  faculty  includes  both  high  quality  experienced  practitioners  and  academics  from  around  the  country.

• While  our  programs  are  grounded  in  theory,  our  faculty  transfers  this  theory  into  applied  knowledge  that  is  usable  in  the  workplace.
