Lab Exercise 1

Topic – Creating a Business View and Making Assignments Duration = 10 minutes

Business Views are ways of organizing data in VOM Advanced so that the custom reports that are created can reflect the realities of your organization. They can be created to represent geographies, organizations, applications, and more. This exercise will show you the process of creating a business view.

Important: Because some time is taken for business view post-processing, we won‟t actually be creating the view in the lab environment. However, we will walk through the steps required to configure the business views that have already been created in the lab environment. The steps provided here are for your example, and you aren‟t supposed to complete them during the lab.

(This Business View is already created due to time but please go through the exercise just to get an idea how to create a Business View)

Creating a Business View

Action: Go to the Manage -> Business Views

Then we would click on the to create a new Business View.

Action: Select Object Types Array, Filesystem, Host and Volume

We would then populate the Name, Object Types, and Levels. For example:

Page 6: SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 4.0 RU1: Optimize …vox.veritas.com/legacyfs/online/veritasdata/SM L04.pdf · 2016. 7. 4. · SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced

6 of 61

Next we would click on the in the bottom to create the 2 levels Department and Application

By clicking Add at the bottom, we will create a Business View called Sample BV that will contain Host objects and has 2 Levels: Department, Application.

When you click add, it can take 15-30 minutes to complete this process.

Page 7: SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 4.0 RU1: Optimize …vox.veritas.com/legacyfs/online/veritasdata/SM L04.pdf · 2016. 7. 4. · SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced

7 of 61

Once complete, you can then assign real values and hosts to those levels. For example, you would click on Assignments and Select Sample BV under Business Views.

We can now create some example levels for Department and Application.

For example, click on the icon to Add a new Department. We‟ll type in Finance.

Add two more Departments like IT and Marketing

Page 8: SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 4.0 RU1: Optimize …vox.veritas.com/legacyfs/online/veritasdata/SM L04.pdf · 2016. 7. 4. · SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced

8 of 61

Right click on Finance in the tree, and click Add Child Instance. We‟ll type in Billing for the Application.

Add SAP for Marketing

Add Oracle for IT

This will leave us with a hierarchy like:

Page 9: SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 4.0 RU1: Optimize …vox.veritas.com/legacyfs/online/veritasdata/SM L04.pdf · 2016. 7. 4. · SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced

9 of 61

We could populate many more Departments and Applications. The point now is to associate hosts with those entities. So, I can assign several servers that are located in the Billing by selecting Billing on the left, then selecting the hosts in the Unassigned Objects table, and clicking the Assign button on the top.

For this example, I have added 7 hosts, but we could add many more hosts.

We will use Business Views later in the custom reports section to show how resources are allocated. This can be useful to show what datacenter certain resources are in or to show costs associated with an application.

Lab Exercise 2

Topic – Tier Configuration Duration = 4 minutes

VOM Advanced has the ability to define custom tiers that will be automatically assigned to the storage resources in the discovered environment. They can be used to understand how those tiers are being utilized and allocated. They also have a price associated with them in order to facilitate chargeback reports, which effectively associates a cost for the storage being used by a collection of hosts or applications.

In this exercise we‟ll examine the tiering interface in VOM Advanced and explore how to define new tiers and edit existing ones.

Action: Go to Manage -> Storage Tiers

Here you will see a listing of the pre-configured tiers that come with VOM Advanced:

These can be adjusted as needed by selecting a given Tier and editing the available attributes such as the Name, Description, Cost, and the Rules for determining which LUNs fit this tier.

Page 11: SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 4.0 RU1: Optimize …vox.veritas.com/legacyfs/online/veritasdata/SM L04.pdf · 2016. 7. 4. · SM L04 Veritas Operations Manager Advanced

11 of 61

Additionally, the tiers can be re-ordered by using the Up/Down Arrows on the right hand side of the Storage Tiers table. They can be named effectively anything, and will be assigned to whichever Tier matches the Rule AND has the highest rank.

Rules to define tiers can be very simple or quite complex. Next to the rule, you can click on the button to edit the specification. This will bring up the Rule Builder window, which will let you define a number of different conditions that comprise the rule. These include things like RAID Levels, Vendor, Thin or Not, and Array Model.

These tiers are then applied to the Storage details discovered by VOM Advanced, and used in such reports as Arrays Allocating Tiered Storage, Hosts with Allocated Tiered Storage, Tiered Storage Summary, SAN Chargeback, Host Storage Allocation.

Lab Exercise 3

Topic – Allocated LUN's Reclamation Duration = 4 minutes

To help controlling the datacenter cost by indentify storage waste, remediate the storage waste and help promote a more responsible use of storage this exercise will walk you through the process of using a canned report for showing unclaimed or unassigned LUNs by host using the canned report that are part of VOM Advanced. By selecting the host in a VOM Advanced ES report you will be directed to the VOM MS where the host is being managed. Here you can reclaim storage identified in the report.

Action: Go to Sample Reports -> Reclamation and select: Allocated LUNs Reclamation

Now we want to select the Host VOM_MS

Action: Click on the drop down window Change Scope and select the host: VOM_MS

Lab Exercise 4

Topic – Is my Application running on the correct Storage? Duration = 10 minutes

To minimize the risk of performance problems, data loss by using Tier storage which is not setup for replication, mirroring or snapshot type of backup. Most Tier 1 storage is Fast, using mirroring and replication and has a fast way of backup/restore where lower tiering is more for slower, cheaper storage for non-critical application. This exercise will walk you through the process of creating a custom report showing what Tiering your Application is running on.. By using Tier to determine what type of storage you have you can easily check if you‟re Application is running on the right type of storage.
