“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Dear Friend,Nearly 50,000 individuals came to us in need of life changing support in 2015. Many had lost their joy as they faced hunger, homelessness, and an uncertain future as their limited income was not enough to meet their basic needs.

As you read the stories that follow, you will see that we are committed to serving the whole person - body, soul, and spirit - with integrity and respect, using creative solutions to positively transform lives. Homeless families who come to us with nothing find food and safe shelter, but we don’t stop there. Life and job skills training, case management, on-site medical care, mental health counseling, and edu-cational childcare are just a few of the ways we offer support that leads to permanent self-sufficiency.

For our approach to work, we need you, an army of support behind us. Thank you for Bringing Joy to the World through your generous giving and concern for others.

May God bless you.

Carla Nelson By the time she came to The Salvation Army, Carla Nelson had been homeless for over a year. A series of health issues and lack of support systems had left her without the financial or social resources she needed to meet her most basic of needs. Having lived with family most of her life, Carla explains that she knew very little about how to live on her own. Resources like the city bus system and computers were foreign to her and she lacked the job skills she needed to gain employment.

At The Salvation Army’s emergency homeless shelter, Carla found the comprehen-sive support she needed to become self-sufficient. Her immediate needs were met with safe housing and healthy meals. At the recommendation of her case manager, Carla attended life and job skills training where she learned skills like credit and money management, using a computer to search for jobs, and nutrition. Doctors who visit our shelter twice per week as a part of our UK Free Medical Clinic helped Carla learn to manage her health and gain access to necessary medications.

Recently, Carla graduated to our transitional living center where she has begun to transition towards independent living with supportive services nearby whenever she needs them. Her case manager meets with her once per week and she continues to attend job skills training as she searches for employment. Carla says she finds hope in the achievements of her fellow residents. “If they can do it, so can I.” Carla is con-fident that she is well on her way to becoming self-sufficient. “I don’t feel isolated anymore,” she tells us. “I know what I need to do to take care of myself.”

The Daniels Family The Daniels family became homeless after dad, Dion, was involved in a car ac-cident and was unable to work during his recovery. They came to The Salvation Army, looking for an opportunity to start over. Ours is the only shelter in the area that houses single fathers with their children and Dion says, “It’s a blessing.”

While Dion works to build a solid foundation for his family, three year old Don-ovan attends our Early Learning Center, free of cost. Donovan enjoys coming to his “school” and interacting with the other children. One day, when his dad came early to pick him up, Donovan said, “I can’t go because I have to go to gym, have my snack, and say my ABC’s.”

Because his son has access to safe, all-day care, Dion has been able to work on his plan to become self-sufficient. He’s currently interviewing for a new job and hopes to soon begin attending school to obtain a degree in video motion graph-ics and editing. He’s passionate about sharing his story to help others and wants to create videos that inspire youth.

The Kaverman Family Ashley Kaverman came to our emergency shelter with a strong desire to become self-sufficient. As a single mother of an eight year old boy with multiple disabilities, she knew the road would not be easy.

At The Salvation Army, Ashley found the support she was looking for. Her son Trevor was enrolled in our Boys and Girls Club after school program so that she could search for employment. Ashley has high praise for the program. “I always used to worry about putting Trevor in child care, because of his disabilities,” says Ashley. “I haven’t had a single worry since he started attending here.” With the help of her case manager, Ashley was able to find a full time job at a local daycare and The Sal-vation Army provided bus tokens so she could get there. On-site smoking cessation classes helped Ashley quit smoking and she has now gone more than eight weeks without a cigarette!

The future is looking bright for Ashley and Trevor. Thanks to Ashley’s new job they’ve been able to start saving and are planning to move into their own apartment in May. Trevor says he wants to become a comic book writer —he’s already created his own superhero and has nearly finished writing his first comic book! Thanks to his mom’s hard work and the support of our programs, he now has a stable routine and network of caring adults to support him in reaching his dreams.

“I appreciate the support and encouragement my sons receive with their school work.” — Beth Milburn

While The Salvation Army is dedicated to providing for those who are struggling with poverty and homelessness, we are also determined to put an end to one of its main causes – a lack of education.

Beth and Jim Milburn’s two sons, Graydon and Elie, regularly attend the afterschool program, summer camp, basketball league, and no school fun days at The Salvation Army. “Our family loves being a part of The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. I especially appreciate the support and encouragement my sons receive with their school work. My boys know that school comes first,” states Beth. One of the Club’s tutors, Ms. Linda Wilson, a Fayette County School teacher, has high praise for Elie’s efforts to complete his homework. Elie was presented with the Education Award at last year’s Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Annual Luncheon for his outstanding work and positive attitude.

The Young FamilyWhen Rakhya started Kindergarten in the fall of 2014, her mom visited an in-formation fair at her school to search for a quality after-school program. Mom, Katina, is a single parent who works full time and often does not get home until after 5 p.m. She was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to afford after-school care. Like many families, Katina’s salary puts them just out of reach of the Ken-tucky Child Care Assistance Program but is still barely enough to meet their basic needs for things like food, shelter, and medical care. Once these needs are met, there’s very little left for childcare. For these families, The Salvation Army fills in the gap with need-based scholarships, funded by generous donors.

Rakhya loves coming to the Boys and Girls Club after school and hates it when it’s time to go home. She enjoys participating in the variety of activities offered and especially likes art, computer learning activities, and games with other chil-dren. On Thursday evenings she attends Sunbeams where her mom says she’s learning to be proud of who she is as a girl, and that girls are strong. Rakhya says she wants to be a psychologist when she grows up so she can “help a lot of people”. Her mom just wants her to “be positive” and says “she can be anything she wants to be!”

The heart of this Army is found in its spiritual ministry. From here, we reach out to heal wounds of the soul, to share the love of Jesus Christ, and to proclaim God’s promise of salvation.

William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, realized that one could not preach salvation to someone whose stomach was empty. Booth also understood that simply feeding hungry stomachs would not lift people from hopelessness and despair. True and lasting change takes place from the inside out. It is a work of God’s grace.

Today, in addition to expressing God’s love in practical ways through our various social service programs, we provide opportunities for adults and children to hear the gospel message. Worship services, Sunday School classes, and Bible studies are open to our clients and to the community at large. You are welcome to join us.

The William Booth Society is The Salvation Army’s most prestigious donor recognition program. It is named for the founder of The Salvation Army who began helping individuals in London who were considered outcasts of society –the homeless, the poor, and the destitute. William Booth Society members are invariably among the leaders who cause positive change in their communities. All are committed to go beyond mere concern and to take action by making an annual gift of $5,000 or more.

I am doing the most good.

I am hope.I am compassion.I am strength.I am faith.I am doing the most good.

I serve a community.A region.A nation.A world.I serve heroes.I serve victims.I serve a sovereign God.I am doing the most good.I am an Army.Drafted by the Creator.Commissioned by a man who defied death. My enemies are despair and destruction. My ammunition is grace and mercy. My allies are generosity and benevolence.

I am an Army.Helping others be all they can be.I am doing the most good.

I feed empty stomachs and hungry souls.I rebuild ruined homes and shattered lives.I am a willing listener for a veteran with stories to tell.I am a bottled water and an encouraging smile for a weary firefighter.I am an answered prayer.A silver lining.A second chance.I am doing the most good.

I am a humble steward of other people’s generosity.I am a grateful courier of a stranger’s kindness.I am the faithful executor of others’ goodwill.I take my responsibility seriously.I am blessed.I am a blessing.I am The Salvation Army.I am doing the most good.

...the promise of The Salvation Army.

Doing the Most Good...
