A writer friend always tells me that anyone can write a 1,000 page novel. Odds are the plot will have loose ends, the characters won’t be developed and the dialogue will meander. Conclusion: writing a 250 page novel with a tight plot, well thought out characters and appropriate dialogue is hard.

The same is true for abstract artists. Every artist is trying to convey a thought in their work, especially when working in the abstract.

It’s easier to make your thoughts known on a large surface. Simply put, there’s space to work. You can use color, texture and shape broadly. Plus, depending on the artist’s method, there’s room to toss, spray, drip and splatter broadly.

But if you are constrained to a small area, you have to be clear in your thought and execution to create effectively and, most difficult of all, it also has to be visually compelling.

We believe these artists have created successful small abstract paintings and photographs. We hope you agree that these works are small gems.
