Small Group Questions September 2, 2018 Series: (Stand alone message) Message: “What Are You Doing Here? This stand alone message is about the story of Elijah from the Old Testament. Most would regard him as a brave, unashamed, courageous leader for God. But even a man like Elijah had his moment of fear, and ran from the storm he was facing, and from the plans God had before him. Yet, God’s love and care for him, just as it is for us, doesn’t stop. Even when we run from our lives in fear, God will provide, care for, and show Himself to us in unique ways. (Questions to get everyone to participate) 1. As a child, when playing games like hide-n-go-seek, did you have that one special hiding spot? What about it made it so good? 2. What’s the worst storm you’ve either seen up close, or been affected by? (Questions based on the primary text) Read 1 Kings 19:1-13. 3. In the previous chapter, Elijah had just finished performing quite an impressive miracle (he prayed for fire from heaven, and God answered him). Why do you suppose now, he is so afraid? 4. Why do you think Elijah runs so far, even after God sends an angel to care for him? 5. In vs 11 God tells Elijah to go stand before him, then proceeds to show Elijah 3 major storms (wind, fire, and earthquake), but it says God wasn’t in those. What do you think that means? 6. Why does God speak to Elijah only using a “gentle whisper?” 7. If God were asking you the same question He asks Elijah, what would you say? Read Mark 4:35-41 8. Have you ever felt like one of the disciples in the boat? Facing a storm, and all courage and faith has been stripped away…. Explain.
