"New normal” vs “Smart”?
"Smart" and Energy
"Smart" and Cities
Conclusions
The concept behind "the new normal" is that we are halfway in the transition to a brave new digital world and this is probably going to be a very complex period for everybody living in the developed world since it will require many people to leave their comfort zone on a large number of topics and to cope necessarily with several situations that nobody will be able to avoid anymore (e.g.: access ubiquity, privacy issues, sensors pervasivity, information overload, etc.)

What’s “the new normal”?

“New normal” or “Smart”?
Technology is the cause and the enabler, but also the victim of this transformation, since the old way of thinking, doing, managing infrastructures and platforms is radically being turned upside down by the change in the viewpoint that will come with this flip.
What I will talk about today is that the new so-called "smart" paradigm is just a way to label this flip since smart is exactly about information, intelligence, integration and innovation.
Let's look at some examples
“Smart” and Energy
Building Energy Management Systems for the control and supervision of the energy-related technological infrastructure of buildings networks
Smart MicroGridsSystems for the generation, distribution and control of the energy flows at local level
The interfacing and integration of Smart Building with Smart Microgrid opens up major benefits for both the building operators and the utilities. They are already interconnected through the former consuming approximately 40% of electricity generated and delivered through the grid network. These facts make it imperative that they are connected in such way they can achieve the maximum benefits in reducing energy consumption and at the same time for Smart Building to feed clean energy into the grid to meet the utilities need to reduce CO2 emissions by gradually closing down central fossil generating plants.
Digital Building Operating
Systemo Efficient use of energy, operational effectiveness and
tenants satisfaction.
o Compact and effective unified cockpit providing real time awareness of all the information needed to operators and management to guide the operations and to be alerted in case of serious events
o Highly reliable single aggregation platform, which continually acquires, stores and elaborates information collected by several building sub systems (HVAC, Elevators,..) and external information such as weather forecast.
o Sophisticated algorithms for expected thermal profile and occupancy prediction ; this forecast is used to Identify the best start-stop time for each HVAC to reduce the associated energy bills
Main features
Microgrid
Main featuresA Microgrid is about:• the structures, equipments, sensors, connections,
information sinks and control rooms• the available services to the community usersThe core functionalities of Selex ES proposition are:
Analysis:– Energy Cost
Analysis– Energy Storage
Analysis– Report
Dashboard:– Situation Awareness– Business View– Topology View– Security
Forecasting– Production Forecast– Generation
ForecastingTechnology Services
– Optimization– Customer Profiling
Datawarehousing
Energy Efficiency - use case
Privately owned real estate company, managing around 40 buildings (1,3Msqm) located in Manhattan
Selex ES provides an innovative situational awareness “cockpit” based on the analysis of real-time data intelligence from legacy independent building systems (HVAC, BMS, Occupancy Counters, Elevators, Fire and Security Alarms) integrated into a single learning machine able to perform and propose actions to proactively correct, adjust, and re-commission these systems for total performance optimization, efficiency and reduced carbon footprint.
The pilot version showed a payback in less than 6 months
The project is under deployment in 16 skyscrapers
Smart Energy for Defense
Military bases need to maintain operational surety of power supply through trusted reliable and resilient generation and electrical distribution system
All the critical loads must be served without any exception while priority loads are to be served based on current generation and load conditions
Military bases need to forecast exactly fuel consumption, minimize its consumption whenever possible and keep it to a safe level against possible contingencies
Military bases are expected to generate savings on the cost of procurement of electrical energy and to start to trade energy as a market operator
Finally the energy resources of the military basis may support the operations of the external grid in case of impending problems such as power mismatch and instability
REQUIREMENTS
Smart Energy for Defense
The typical generation and distribution system (Microgrid) may consist of : A MV electrical substation and a few LV
substations connected to the external grid A number of diesel generators, that provide
the bulk of generation coupled with photovoltaic arrays and possibly local energy storage
Fuel storage tanks Loads (divided in critical and conventional
with different priorities) A local SCADA that may have connection
also with the control and dispatching system of the external network operator
THE SCENARIO
Smart Microgrid
The Smart micro-grid dispatcher provides the necessary control and regulation actions on generation, utilization and distribution
The Smart Micro Grid approach moves intelligence where it is required and coordinate the behavior of each component
Operational research is coupled to Artificial intelligence to manage operations of active and passive components and the flow of energy
A streamlined Energy Mgmt Decision Support System is provided to the operator
The smart microgrid approach allows bases to operate with or without the external grid, in either an “islanded” or a grid-tied configuration. This approach permits cost savings as well as energy reliability and energy security. In addition to being smaller, the power generation integrates a diversified fuel mix, including secure on-site fuel storage and PV arrays with newer renewable and sustainable energy technologies

“Smart” and CitiesTHE CONCEPT
A three tier model
• Distributed sensors for data
collection
• Integrated and interoperable
Secure Networks and
Communications
• Innovative and open applications
for all stakeholders
plus
an intelligent Control Center
for unified City Operations
Safety and Security (physical, occupation, moral, family, health and property) are one of the primary needs according to Maslow's pyramid
For this very reason it is one of the most evident elements of evaluation of the "smartness" of public administrations worldwide
The convergence of different technologies can enable typical models of "sense & respond" to effectively address the problems of context
This condition, together with the use of networks of "Emergency Response" allows the creation of applications and services that help combat urban crime and support emergencies operators

Use of advanced technology for security
Security of the “Content” (Urban Security)A Smart City needs to improve the safety of citizens using technology in a smart way to ensure:- Prevention and control of the risks of the territory- Prevention and control of crime- Social inclusion
Security of the “Container” (System of Systems)A Smart City is a container of technologies, networks and systems and therefore it is necessary to ensure integrated and convergent security of the platform connecting all the subsystems (many of which are Critical Infrastructure).
The new Digital Smart Cities raise two kinds of problems in terms of security:
Better Safe than Smart?
Integrated City

A new conclusion
The examples we discussed point to the fact that in order to be successful in this brave new digital world, in order to be able to lead the edge and to intelligently support the evolution, the information, innovation and integration requirements of clients and partners, technology providers must understand the shift and ride the wave of change or, rather, ride the wave of the "design to change” embracing new disciplines, e.g.: agility, OODA loop, re-use, streaming data, mobility, etc.
For a system integrator active in the Defence, Security and Smart markets, such as Selex ES this digital evolution also marks a new paradigm in the “dual use” approach.
We believe that many of the new digital technologies, derived from large investments in consumer markets, of the smart environment will constitute a new powerful dual capability (from consumer to professional, from IT to industrial automation, from civil to defense), that we will be able to leverage to help our customers reach their new normal goals!
A smart conclusion
