Lesson Plan
Prep Time: 45-60 min
Background Knowledge: The teacher should become familiar with the tools located in the tool bar, and the tabs located at the edge of the work area. Important are the Pens, Full Screen, and Shapes tools in the tool bar. The Gallery and Tool Properties tabs are also crucial to this lesson. The teacher should be able to orient (reorient) the SMART Board if needed. It is recommended the instructor run through the lesson prior to the class presentation. The student should have or gain experience with the SMART Board interface. Basic skills are needed for writing and erasing using the SMART Board pens and eraser. The student should also be able to drag objects and pull tabs on the SMART Notebook page. Students should have previously been exposed to United States geography, with an ultimate goal of recognition of specific U.S. states by their physical shape, with a minimum of hints.
Prior to Lesson: Create a geography lesson for the identification of 15-50 U.S. States, or use the provided SMART Notebook lesson U.S. Geography Erase and Reveal. Hints on the pull tabs can be tailored to fit the knowledge level of the students. Step-by-step directions for creating an erase and reveal lesson are provided below. All fifty U.S. state shapes can be located in the SMART Notebook Gallery. The SMART Notebook lesson included features 30 states, and can be modified to include all 50 states. These shapes can also be imported from outside sources. Pull tabs are located in the Gallery.
Time Needed for Lesson: 45-60 minutes

Directions: Using the included U.S. Geography Erase and Reveal Lesson: Place a copy of the SMART lesson U.S. Geography Erase and Reveal on the desktop of your computer. Open your SMART Notebook software. Hook your computer to the LCD projector and to the SMART Board. Open the Notebook lesson. Use the Full Screen option to increase the size of the lesson to its fullest. Inform the class that each student will have a chance to come to the SMART Board and identify a U.S. state by its shape. A hint is provided for each state by sliding out a pull tab at the edge of the screen. Have them write their guess in the blank space to the right or left of the geographic shape. The student must identify the state, write the name of the state correctly spelled and capitalized. The final step is to have the students erase inside the shape to reveal the state’s correct name. Model this procedure by doing the first state (Alaska). Remember to select “Don’t Save” when you have completed the lesson. Creating or modifying a U.S. Geography Erase and Reveal Lesson: If you want to create your own lesson, or modify the existing lesson, refer to the document named How to Use Erase and Reveal in SMART Notebook. Extension/Challenge:
! Have students add to (or create) additional Notebook pages using the teacher directions. ! Add a timer to the activity. Recommended time is 15-30 seconds per page. ! Ask the student to write the two-letter code for the U.S. state after they have revealed the answer. ! Add additional tabs to a page with more hints or information about the state.

One of the most useful skills for creating projects in SMART Notebook 10 is
Erase and Reveal. Students can come to the SMART Board and write their answer, then
erase and reveal the actual answer. The interactive nature of this activity is valid from
kindergarten to high school. The creator can use pictures, numbers, formulas, and text.
How To
Using Erase and Reveal in SMART Notebook
In this example, a question has been posed, and the
answer is hidden in the oval shape. Using the eraser
tool, a teacher or student can erase to reveal the
answer.
Step by Step Procedure to Create an Erase and Reveal Question
First open your SMART Notebook 10 software. Choose a New page from File in the top menu bar.
(A new page will usually open by default.) Begin by typing your question. Two ways to put the
question into the Notebook page are as follows. The first method is to click on the page and begin
typing. You will see a text box appear. A Fonts toolbar allows you to change the font, size, and
color of the text. In the example below the text is Ariel, size 28, not bolded, and black in color.
These settings can all be changed. Simply highlight the text and make your changes. Place the
question near the top of the Notebook page.

Next, using either method previously mentioned, create the instruction sentence “Erase
inside the shape (oval, box, triangle, circle, etc.) to reveal the answer.” Place this text
near the bottom of the Notebook page.
Now, go to the Notebook upper tool bar and choose the Shapes tool. Then select the
Properties tab or the Properties icon in the tool. You will see a Tool Properties page
revealed. Make sure the Fill Effects are on Solid Fill and white is chosen. Now choose
your shape and place the shape in between your question and instruction sentences.
The other way to add text is to select Draw and Text. A
box will drop down giving six options for your text. By
using this method, the creator can keep the questions
standardized in their appearance, which is especially
suitable for presentations featuring multiple questions.
You still have the option of changing the text by double-
clicking on it, and using the Fonts toolbar to customize
the appearance.
The Tool Properties tool is found in two places. Make sure the
Fill Effects are the same color as your background. After
selecting Shapes you will see over a dozen different shapes to
use in your Notebook page. Select your shape and expand it
into the area between your question and instructions. It will
automatically be placed in the background of the page. The
answer to the question will be placed on top of this shape.

A crosshair tool will appear after you select a shape from the Shapes menu. Drag the
crosshairs across the center of the page to create the shape. If the shape doesn’t turn out
the way you wanted the first time, simply go to Edit and Undo to create the shape again.
In the example above, a star was chosen as the shape in which the answer will reside.
Next, the answer must be created using the text tool. Because you’re creating this after
you’ve made the shape, it will be automatically placed on top of the shape. Create the
answer beside the shape, select the pointer tool (to make it a moveable object), and slide
the answer to the center of the shape. Notebook software does have the capability of
moving objects forward and backward in layers on the page.
You can move objects backward and forward
in layers on the Notebook page.
Just erase inside the shape and the
answer will be revealed.
Create your answer and slide
in on top of your shape.

Now select Line Styles, white background, thick line width. Choose the middle pen
(Pens) from the menu bar. In essence you will be writing over your answer with a thick
white stripe, which will make the answer disappear (until it is erased). The pen tool will
cover your answer; it can then be erased to reveal the answer to the class. Be sure to save
your page when you’re done. It is possible to use colors other than white for this project.
Just match the Fill Effects color with the Line Styles color to accomplish your erase and
reveal.
When the lesson is presented to the class, the teacher can invite a student to come up to the
SMART Board to write down their answer in a blank area of the Notebook page, and then
erase and reveal the correct answer. Select Don’t Save when it is time to put away the
Notebook project. That way the answers will again be covered up for the next
presentation.
Project Hint: Select the Select tool (it looks like an arrow or pointer) whenever you feel
like you’ve lost control of your actions. Using the Select tool turns text boxes and images
into objects, which can then be moved anywhere on the page.
