3 ACRONYMS AND TERMS

Term Description / Example

Actuator (with or

without Status)

An actuator connected via a smart home interface. Examples

are a lighting actuator, an appliance actuator, and a window

actuator. An actuator may be also able to report status of the

device being actuated, via the smart home interface.

Avatar / Virtual Butler

(VB)

A remotely steerable webcam and video call platform which

can be used to verify that an aged or infirm person, and their

circumstance in the home, are ok .

baby monitor A device used to listen remotely to sounds and/or view video

in some rooms of the house

blood-pressure

sensor/monitor

A blood pressure measuring device.

electronic door lock A system which locks and unlocks a door electronically.

emergency alert An alert (e.g., SMS, message, voice call) sent by a system to

contact one or more first-responders; (e.g., an Ambulance, a

relative, a police department).

gps + special-phone A mobile phone designed with a location tracking and alert

system.

heating control A control system that uses a rules-engine or remote access to

control heating or cooling.

metering sensors A device which can interrogate and electricity or gas meter,

and report current usage rate, total usage since last reading,

and related data.

metering tariffs The current price/unit of resources provided by a Resource

Provider. Tariffs may be displayed as an actual price at current

usage.

moisture sensor A sensor that sends an alert when moisture is detected. Some

versions may need to be heat-resistant for use near the stove.

Some versions might be used to signal bath-tub overflow.

movement sensor A sensor that detect movements of people or things. A

movement sensor is not necessarily merely a motion-sensor.

Term Description / Example

pulse sensor A heart-rate measurement device, usually with wireless

connection to a "gateway" which can forward the data locally

or to a cloud service provider.

redundant uplink A separate, redundant broadband connection used for

failover.

reminder (text-to-voice) A time-programmed voice reminder. This is also called an

"announcement" feature.

rules engine A local or cloud-based program logic for services, which may

have a history and a "learning" function, and which is

programmable by an authorized stakeholder. Depending

upon who owns and controls the device, the stakeholder may

be the “end user” or “Service Provider User” or “Professional”

user.

screen-sharing A service in which one user accesses web pages and a second

user at a different location can see an active view of the same

page, including the position of the mouse of the first user.

Optionally, the second user can use keyboard and mouse to

access the web page on behalf of the first user; this is called

co-browsing.

secure data link A VPN or tunnel with encryption, used for protecting the

privacy of specific data including personal and/or usage data

Smart Home

Management GUI

An interface used by customers or Service Providers to

configure services in the Smart Home

smells sensor Sensor used in the kitchen to detect low levels of burning.

user room location A system to monitor the location of a user inside the house,

especially "in bathroom", "in kitchen", etc. May use

movement detectors, sound detectors, or a transponder

which the user carries.

user-collapsed sensor A sensor that triggers an alert when it detects that the user

has collapsed.

video call A point-to-point or multi-party video call.

weighing sensor A sensor which measures weight and can transmit the result.

4 SCOPE AND PURPOSE This document presents a set of exemplary Smart Home use cases that have been identified within the

HGI, as well as categorisation of those use cases, and set of technology enablers which are likely to be

required in implementing those use cases.

These use cases have motivated various HGI Smart Home requirements such as Smart Home Architecture

and System Requirements (HGI-RD035) and Smart (Home) Device Template (SDT) (HGI-RD050).

The intent of this document is to present an overview of the many use cases involved in Smart Home

rather than a detailed description of them.

5 USE CASE CATEGORIZATION In this chapter, a tables is presented which serves as background to the tables presented in the

subsequent chapter.

The table, “Use Case Categorization by Initiator and Action” categorises the Use Cases according to the

Initiator and Action of the Use Case. These categories are used in subsequent chapters.

Broadly speaking there are use cases

where the sensor triggers a notification or alarm

where the sensor or a human being causes actions or controls other equipment (typical home

automation)

which are always implicitly possible where the user views sensor data or other information,

where a particular user (administrator) changes configurations within the system.

This perspective looks at the use-cases in terms of who the initiator is and what action is taken by the

initiator (or what action results). As can be seen below, this perspective results in nine (9) types of

initiator-action combinations.

Initiator Action Description Comment/Example Use Case Category

Sensor Notify Sensor initiates notification to user, or software

Synthetic speech, SMS, email, API, etc.

SensorNotify

Sensor initiates alarm Fire, burglar, etc. results in notification(s) to humans, no further actions sensors may show location

SensorAlarm

Sensor initiates call for assistance

Time-critical SensorCall or SensorAlarm

Activate Sensor initiates (re)actions

Sensor is part of control loop with automated actions e.g. close window

SensorActivate

Human Monitor User monitors something

UserMonitor

Activate User turns something on/off

Typical remote-control e.g., changing air-conditioning control or activate lights in room

Primary User Any of the users listed in this

table. For a specific use case

there is often one main or

primary user type.

Still does own washing

and cooking.

Wants to remain living

at home.

Busy Pro Professional person who needs

to save time on chores and is

technology-friendly.

Entrepreneur

Small-business owner

Carer / Care-giver Someone with responsibility for

watching over the safety and

comfort of others, not

necessarily in the same house

(i.e. remote monitoring may be

needed). The Carer is always

included in security or medical

alerts.

Parent of two children

May visit parents-in-law

on weekend

ComfortPlus A person who appreciates the

convenience brought by home

automation.

eHealth A person of any age group who

needs or desires to regularly

monitor vital health data such as

blood pressure, and provide

(real-time) copies of the data to

health professionals (nurse,

doctor, health centre).

Person who has

suffered a heart attack

and is recovering at

home

Cardiac clinic monitors

indicators of heart

health remotely and

remotely access some

SmartHome

equipment/services on behalf

of another User. This is a kind of

"super-user" who is not the

direct beneficiary of a service. In

some cases it may be the Help
